Yes, it is fundamental :) We are ever-evolving, immortal, non-physical beings having a temporary human experience in this "virtual reality", and the purpose of our lives here is to increase the quality of our consciousness through learning and evolving by making good and bad choices. For those of you who enjoyed this documentary and would like to learn more about how our reality truly works, you might want to consider watching former NASA physicist and consciousness / out-of-body expert Tom Campbell's MBT Science Trilogy series here on KZbin. Although my education was totally "scientific" and thus "materialistic", i grew up surrounded by the Vedic tradition of Vedanta philosophy which posited (5,000+ years ago) the concept of "Neutral Monism" called Advaita, which translated means "NON-DUALITY" with the name "Brahman" as the SOLE underlying Reality with the ONLY "attribute" of "Awareness". I've since been content to let it be and I find so much clarity in this perspective that I don't need to convince anyone of it... it will become self evident over time. Good to find others who are willing to surrender their materialism for something much more powerful.

@@ΠαναγιωτηςΑγγελ very true, one of the inevitable truths that is revealed in panpsychism is the eternal nature of consciousness. Eternal means there is always more, and the more we know... the more we know we DONT know. Science has uncovered far more questions than answers... wisdom is actually just greater awareness of ignorance. And there lies our potential. We are like infants in a library. Until we know we are ignorant we cannot learn. The materialists today think they are scholars in that library... and yet their religion is founded on random chance. 🤔 What panpsychism delivers is the awareness of this ignorance and invites inquiry, curiosity and the opening of new chapters. It embraces it in an unspeakable way. "The words of truth are always paradoxical" Lao Tzu

@@nty3929 That’s a valid point, though far from scientific. e.g. if ANY scientist had taken your stand on any theory that had not yet been defined and measured there would be no science. Before Newton, nobody believed the force of Gravity solved any problems. Before Einstein, nobody believed relativity solved any problems. They both believed and pursued these ideas before they were able to define or measure them. Science is about curiosity, investigation and discovering a way to define and measure reality. The double slit experiment is the beginning of observing consciousness in light. As more minds consider this possibility I predict a beautiful formula will emerge similar to e=mc2. We didn’t have a way to measure the energy in matter before Einstein defined it so beautifully… he never would have sought to define it or measure it if he took your stand. I was so glad to see that this was out. Maybe the best overview production I've seen on the subject. I'm surprised you didn't bring up Donald Hoffman's conscious agents Theory. I did see a quick shot of him. Along more psychological lines, is Ian McGilchrist's work on the relationships between the hemispheres of the brain. It gives a wonderful account of how we've arrived at the world we currently live in. His 2009 book "The Master and His Emissary" and soon to be released book "The Matter With Things" should be read by anyone seriously interested in consciousness. I think he'll be instrumental in our advancing beyond a world of toddlers who think we're hot shit because we have rockets and computers. After a full blown, spontaneous, nearly instantaneous kundalini awakening in the seventies and 45 years of subsequent meditation sprinkled with intense psychedelic experiences, I assert that consciousness is, preceding time, and that everything else is an expression of it. Pure, infinite, cosmic, God consciousness is, and it's nature is to express itself. It is the only thing that is really real - everything else comes and goes, but it just is. Consciousness is; awareness implies one that is aware and something to be aware of - the observer and the observed; perception adds the process, giving the observer, the thing that is observed, and the observation - something happens. I use a hierarchical structure with unity at the peak and multiplicity at the base as the primary structure for my framework for understanding my experience of the world. Of course it's just a way of connecting the dots and is not actually what is. Anything describing reality, isn't reality. The best we can do is create models or frameworks that are more or less accurate, detailed, and comprehensive.

Everything takes place within consciousness. Everything we experience takes place within consciousness. We cannot peek around the corner of our experience to see if it matches some free-standing reality. Yet, there is a world that resists our desires. We don't get everything we want. Not everything we try works. Some things work. Some things don't work. Some things work better, some things don't work at all. It is the working that defines reality. An ongoing process.

What strikes me most personally watching this inspiring video, is the apparent convergence of these pan psychic accounts towards the ideas of non dualism already uttered in ancient Hindu philosophy (e.g., Advaita Vedanta). Especially the concept of "cosmopsychism" as one consciousness being refracted into individual minds is one of its basic premises. I wonder whether there are/were some inspirations drawn from these "eastern" ideas for the different "western" concepts or whether they were rather independently developed. Either way, consciousness as a fundamental property of nature is a fascinating idea I still have no definite position on.

I resonate with the idea neither consciousness nor matter are primary but perhaps both two sides of the same coin part of something deeper… We seem to rationalise reality from a particular perspective that is consciousness with in a framework of matter, space and time. The question of whether this particular perspective is the objective, literal or most accurate is difficult to know.

If we are to reject dualism and embrace monism, then there is only one intrinsic nature of reality. If a tree falls in a forest and no ones around to hear it, does it make a sound? You would assume yes why wouldn’t it, there’s other life forms around such as other trees so of course it makes a sound. But let’s expand this question. If a universe is created and there’s no consciousness to perceive anything, does anything really exist at all? If it did exist with no conscious to acknowledge creation, does it even matter? If there’s no consciousness to observe anything how could we be sure anything exists at all. Yin yang. You can’t have one without the other. Consciousness itself is the fundamental force behind creation. God, the universe, consciousness, creation, these are all the same things. The very fact that something exists rather than nothing implies that everything is eternal and everything has always existed, and will continue to exist infinitely. Now time to play the game of life and try to find some enjoyment. ✌️
@charleshuguley932311 ай бұрын
I know this is not relevant to the idea you're expressing, but I have always disliked the tree falling in the forest metaphor. It's based on a misunderstanding of what 'sound" means. Sound is the perception of an air wave exciting the diaphragm of the ear. So of course sound requires the participation of some creature with an ear. The answer to the question is No.
@KevinsDisobedience11 ай бұрын
As Schopenhauer said, “No object without subject.” If there’s no subjectivity to observe objective reality, there’s no event in any meaningful sense to talk about. Therefore, for Idealists, subjectivity is always first and last; it’s really all there is to talk about. The tree will effect a cause, sure, as trees are constrained by causality, but sound is a subjective experience. So no, it does not make a sound if nobody is there to see (or hear) it fall. Also, vise-versa, no subject without object. It’s hard to imagine a meta-cognitive existence with no boundaries. The boundaries, ie Markov kernels, define us. The universe, then, has to necessarily disassociate to fulfill its own fundamental, subjective, albeit blind drives-ostensibly, diversity and complexity are selected for over time via a kinda universal natural bias.
@KevinsDisobedience11 ай бұрын
I concur, but it’s a deeper philosophical question than it at first appears, as it is a thought experiment about subject-object distinction. There’s both hidden empirical and conceptual assumptions one must make to answer this question. It gets people talking is the point.

You are right, Consciousness is fundamental. It was here before everything and it will be here after everything. Every single one of us is a divided consciousness, no matter where they are, i.e whether they are in this world or in this universe or other universe. We are all living at the same time or should I say, we are all conscious at the same time. There are no time differences anywhere, whether its in this universe or other universes. Time is the same for everything present anywhere and everywhere. It's just a difference in speed of communications per second or minute or hour or year. Time can be slowed or speed up for anything, but it will still be synced with the time everywhere, it will be synced with the time of consciousness everywhere and anywhere. We are all from a single consciousness but now we are divided in infinite things everywhere or anywhere and by anywhere I mean any world or universe or multiverse or infinite verse. Consciousness is everywhere and everything is conscious. This does not prove the existence of any god or gods. God, that can control everything and knows everything because its consciousness is divided now. For god or gods to control anything, they will have to make everything a single consciousness, then they or it will be able to control them and also know about them. I don't know if all these divided consciousness will become one in the future or not, and I don't know that either, if it was one before or not.

Consciousness as "the act of manifestation" is the True thing. It's the fundamental force that gives rise to experience and existence of all kind of forms and realities. Consciousness as "the imprinted memories", "perceptions" or "thinking" is by this unlimited and infinite act of manifestation between multiple layers and networks of co-working with itself. Consciousness as "the feeling" is by the combination of the previous two. "Matter" is just an illusion made by a complex, recursive and abstract system of thought.

I've come to believe that consciousness is fundemental and that Descartes got it backwards and maybe his conclusion should have been: "I am, therefore I think"

Wondering how Bernardo Kastrup was not acknowledged here, but that aside it is a valuable and artful primer via which to consider the primacy of consciousness. Thanks for creating and sharing it.

Bernardo was probably not included because this documentary is defending panpsychism, and Bernardo is an idealist who argues against panpsychism.

Barnardo is an interesting thinker, and I hope to have him on the podcast at some point. We appear to disagree in our valuation of panpsychism but there is a lot of common ground between us. Sadly, many important thinkers could not be mentioned here simply because of the constraints of time.
@wanderingthepeaks3 жыл бұрын
@@MonisticIdealism Well, idealism, insofar as it relates to cosmopsychism, is mentioned toward the end as a premise consistent with what Russell/Eddington were proposing. So whether one agrees with that or not, in considering idealism at all, BK's body of work seems surely worthy of mention. Maybe next time.
@MonisticIdealism3 жыл бұрын
@@wanderingthepeaks I agree, Bernardo does seem noteworthy at least in relation to the cosmopsychism discussion, even though he argues against it. Another person I think is worth noting is Timothy Sprigge: he was an idealist _and_ a panpsychist. So it is possible to be both.

no-one has ever experienced the universe without consciousness. i don't know if either the universe or consciousness are fundamental, but at least consciousness is more certain than the unvierse. i believe that consciousness is more fundamental than the universe.

ALL IS CONSCIOUSNESS! The Universe/Multiverse is conscious, whether one believes so or not. Consciousness and existence are one and the same. "As Above, So Below ... As within, So without ... As the Universe, So the Soul" (Hermes Trismegistus).

The Cosmos, Universe, whatever you want, is running a fantastically huge SETI@HOME system. All "thinking" units are united yet independent enough to allow for individualism. "Group Think" when needed. All units connected also to the main hub. Anything created requires affirmative intentions.

In India all the Vedas and Upanishads talks about the level of consciousness, as how it is working as a fundamental source of existence and how it is evolving, consciousness is defined as Aatma (Self) that is the part of Bramh (Universal consciousness) and body and mind is just a manifestation of it.

"There is no kind of framework within which we can find consciousness in the plural; this is simply something we construct because of the temporal plurality of individuals, but it is a false construction... The only solution to this conflict insofar as any is available to us at all lies in the ancient wisdom of the Upanishad... Vedanta teaches that consciousness is singular, all happenings are played out in one universal consciousness and there is no multiplicity of selves." - Erwin Schrödinger, Austrian physicist

Materialism can explain physical properties, but cannot say what fundamental essence is. When we consider life, divine design, consciousness, soul and faith etc., we scratch the surface of metaphysics. Physics and metaphysics together explains reality.

We place a great deal of emphasis on the role and nature of consciousness, even to the point of asking whether it is a fundamental aspect of reality. Yet, in the Buddhist sutra called the Heart Sutra we are told that everything we experience, all our sensory data, all our feelings, all our thoughts and even our consciousness is fundamentally still a part of of an illusion - it is not what it appears to be. The real 'fundamental' lies beyond everything we can think about, or comprehend with the rational mind. Hence consciousness, far from being fundamental is simply still 'empty'.
