I am a Canadian who has lived in the States, the U.K, and now reside in Australia. My first exposure to cricket was in England watching county matches and being thoroughly confused. When I came to Australia I was taken to a summer time Ashes test match by Australian friends. It was then I discovered that cricket is war. These matches can run for up to 5 full days, in blistering Aussie sun. Baseball, as I'm sure you will agree, is a game of strength, skill and tactics. Cricket is all of those, plus strategy. Remember, it can run for 5 full days. And a series such as the Ashes, will be decided over 5 separate matches. So this is up to 25 days play to decide the winner. Oh, and also, the Ashes is only between Australia and England,, mortal enemies on the cricket pitch. My favorite is to go to a cricket match on sunny summer day, at the Adelaide Oval in South Australia, and spend the day watching the play sitting on the grassy hill, under the huge fig trees, cold beer in hand. And it's affordable, unlike professional sports in North America.

One thing that isn't mentioned is that in cricket the team's captain is much more important than the coach. The captain decides who bats and bowls at any given point. The captain also decides where each player needs to be fielding so if a team has a great captain then they have a much better shot at winning because the captain will strategically help the team save runs.

To be clear there is not just one bowler. There could be 10 different bowlers but mostly there are 4-5. The first bowler bowls an over of 6 balls from one end of the pitch, and a second bowler then bowls an over of 6 balls from the other end of the pitch. Those 2 bowlers keep on bowling until the on-field captain decides to make a change and then a 3rd,4th, 5th bowler takes over.

Let me try to answer some of your questions and hopefully shed some light- 3:39 - the pitch size may appear relatively small. The field size varies depending on the country/city etc. The teams consist of 11 players each. 3:55 - the sprint is only one of the ways in which the batting team can score runs. The sprint may seem small, but remember there are 11 fielders who will try to stop you 5:33 - there are 3 umpires, and one of them stands behind the bowling side wicket 7:33 - the no balls are there to give the game a structure. E.g. the bowler cannot have his feet in front of the line when bowling, akin to feet placement in the other bowling sport. If the bowler over steps, that ball doesn't count and I'd considered a no ball 8:10 - the highest individual score by a batsman in t20 was by Chris Gayle (west indies) who scored 175 (not out, I.e. the bowling team were not able to get him out before the match got over) in just 66 balls 8:35 - if you know the ball is going to cross the boundary, then there is no need to run between the wicket 10:15 - the fielder is trying to knock the bails off the wicket before the batsman can complete his run I.e. cross the crease with his bat/body 11:47 - you get called out only if your body/leg is directly stopping the ball from hitting the wicket. If the ball's trajectory is off course and happens to hit your body, nothing happens 14:16 - a test match is typically played over 5 days 16:00 - a bowler bowls 1 over (6 deliveries), then takes rest while someone else takes over and bowls an over (sorry for the pun). A team will generally have 4-5 bowlers whom they keep rotating over the course of the inning 16:25 - a t20 match lasts between 2.5 to 3 hours 19:46 - in limited over cricket, the overs are limited, so it is highly encouraged to take as many runs as possible in that time frame. If you have confidence in scoring runs by hitting boundaries, then you don't have to try running between the wickets I suggest you watch the highlight of any IPL match. This will show you only the interesting part of the match

So responding to the title before watching the video: It depends. It's a very detailed sport which rewards understanding of it. It has very deep strategic and tactical levels that aren't obvious until you get the basics, and it's not a quick sport. If you want something that is all action, all the time, then no! If you want a sport where sometimes nothing happening is actually a result of very good play by one of the teams, as well as having big moments, then yeah, it probably is! Yeah, it's not much like baseball, but it's closer to that than say basketball! Going by your reaction to a run out, there is likely a few good videos of direct hits and fielding highlights you'll get a kick out of! Try /watch?v=uKX5qHGosRs for example for run outs. 16:00 - That's an interesting detail to pick up on a first watch! Yeah, they do have to manage to workload of the bowlers which is why teams typically have 5 players who are good at bowling, maybe a few others who can contribute a few overs here and there. They do 6 (+ extras) deliveries and then get an over to rest while someone else bowls, but yeah, a team captain will change them out after a few others. It's not just about fatigue, and this is a nuance that maybe gets lost in the limited overs formats, it's also about the condition of the ball and the pitch. As the game goes on, the ball gets worn, helped by the fielding team working one side, and this lets swing bowlers be more effective (close to a baseball curveball). The pitch also starts to develop wear from the feet of the bowler and abtters, and by aiming for this ground, a spin bowl can cause more havoc with the way the ball bounces. There is a constant tactical battle going on between the fielding team captain and the batters who oppose him - what type of bowler to use, should the field be attempting to get a player out, or stop them scoring runs... but this is hard to see when you're not that familiar with the sport. Also, in a 50 overs game, the bowlers are each limited to 10 overs each I'd also add at this point that the batting order is roughly in order of quality. Your best batters are in the top 3, often the very best is at number 3 because the new ball is an advantage for fast bowlers at the start. If one of your openers falls, hopefully the ball has degraded a bit and your best batter presents a real challenge for the fielding team. As for your disbelief on "Days", the slow evolution of the game over days is fascinating for hardcore fans, but you probably need to have some understanding of how things might develop to enjoy watching day 1 or day 2! I'd maybe suggest watching the 4th day of a test as a starting point after spending some times on the limited overs forms. There is a Cricket for Americans channel who might be good for a collab. I'm British, played cricket as a teen, and even I'm having trouble following this video! One VERY pernickety point that I quite like, is that the bails actually have to come dislodged for it to be called out; it is POSSIBLE for the ball to "hit" the wicket so slowly that the bails don't fall. The last game I batted, I was called out "retired hurt". The ball bounced off the top edge of my bat, into my cheekbone! 15:45: That's a typo. 50 6-ball overs is 300 deliveries! Also cricket teams usually have AT LEAST 4 different bowlers.

One of the main differences which plays a big part in the game of cricket is the fact that the ball is generally bounced first (that’s usually the intention). This is important because it then means that the surface the ball bounces on plays a massive role in the quality and outcome of the game. The type of ‘pitch’ or ‘wicket’ differs from field to field and day to day, so there is a huge amount of variation from one game to the next. And in a 5 day game, the pitch deteriorates throughout the match so conditions change and this will favor the batting team or bowling team more at any given time. This also means bowlers have different styles which may be suited to a particular type of pitch or stage in the match e.g. fast bowlers prefer when a pitch is fast and bouncy or new and green whereas a slow spin bowler prefers a pitch that is ruffed up, older and allows for spin. While there are different field dimensions in Baseball, and some games may be played at altitude or other environmental factors that also influence Cricket games, the actual playing surface is possibly more influential in cricket than in almost any other sport. And fun fact : Different countries are known for different pitch styles - there is no set type of pitch that has to be prepared. Some countries like Australia, New Zealand and South Africa commonly produce pitches that are hard and bouncy - which is good for both batting and bowling at different times. While other countries like India, Sri Lanka, West Indies often produce pitches which due to the heat and soil in those places are not always as bouncy but they allow the ball to spin or deviate off the pitch in a different way to other pitches. This again brings different factors into the game and allows different types of bowlers and batters to be successful.

So, what betters (basically hitters) do is try to hit the ball with their bat first, then it would not matter if the ball later hit their leg. They just cannot block first with their leg else they will be deemed out. Also batters don't have to stand in front of wicket. 14:24 If you think that the match is played continuously for days, then rest assured that is not the case. A Test match has 5 maximum days, and the play starts at 11AM (usually). The play time consists of 3 sessions of 2 hours each (usually) and 2 breaks (Lunch break of 40 minutes and Afternoon Tea break of 20 minutes, usually). Thus the play stops for the day at roughly 6PM (usually). The match is continued the next day. Each team has 2 innings (thus the max 4 innings we can see). 15:51 I can understand why you imagine that. If there are only like 2 bowlers bowling for the whole match, then for sure their arms and shoulders will be destroyed. Which is why there are more than 2 bowlers. Each team ideally has like 4 specialist bowlers and 1-2 part time bowlers (usually middle order betters who can bowl decently as well, thus called All Rounders). Also in the limited overs format, the rule is that each bowler can only bowl for max 20% of total overs in an inning i.e. for a 50 overs match, a bowler can bowl max 10 overs, for 20 overs match, only max 4 overs. 18:28 P2 stands for Powerplay 2. To put it in short, Powerplays are phases defining specific fielding restrictions. This is primarily to encourage more runs to be scored. The details depend on the format, but you will see them in limited overs only. No powerplay in Test cricket. 19:38 The batters are not forced to run if they think they cannot make the run. Also if they start running and think they cannot make the run, they are totally allowed to go back to their creases (basically bases with wickets). No rule forcing them to run after committing for the same. 21:41 The presenter did leave out one key detail. An over is a set of 6 LEGITIMATE deliveries. There are two types of ILLEGITIMATE deliveries which the presenter already mentioned i.e. Wide ball and No Ball. Also, a batter can get out when a delivery is deemed as a Wide ball (the only possible type of out I believe is a bowled out). However if a delivery is deemed No ball by the umpire, then even if the batter would be out otherwise (like say caught out or bowled out), then they would be deemed NOT OUT. The only exception to this is a Run out i.e. a batter can get Run out even if the ball is a No Ball. Hope you understand this. 25:39 The reason why that comment says 'Must' is because if there is no bounce (we call it Full Toss), then a good batter can more easily track the trajectory than otherwise and punish such a play, usually by hitting a boundary. Bouncing introduces uncertainty, especially due to how a pitch is made, with all the cracks, bumps and crevices. Also especially because a bowler is not allowed to throw the ball like a Baseball pitch and thus there is not much curve which a typical curve ball would have in Baseball. Which is also why bowlers have to run to gain that momentum, unlike baseball. 25:56 That comment is slightly wrong. Let me clarify for you. When a ball is deemed as a No Ball by the umpire, then automatically one run is provided to the batting team. That ball will be considered illegitimate and thus not be considered for calculating how many balls are left in the over. AND also the batter is awarded a Free Hit for the next delivery. If the delivery is behind the off side of the batter and it hits the wicket from behind, that is a wide ball by rules (this is for limited overs, I believe a test match do not have that wide rule). But because it hit the wicket, the batter is bowled out. Of course even a stump out is possible when a wide ball is delivered, as you said.

The point of covering the stumps is correctly to not get it knocked over by the ball. However, in the early days, batsman would just stand there, covering the whole stumps and not getting out. This put a lot of questions over the legitimacy of blocking the ball with body. So, a new rule was introduced, LBW. It's the most complicated way of getting out in cricket but if explained simply, if the ball hits your legs, and when checked by umpire, and the ball would have knocked over the stumps if the legs were not in between, it would've been called out. So, basically, the ball is hitting the wickets, but leg came in before it, hence leg-before-wicket or LBW.

RIP Warnie 😢 Not because you necessarily need to learn about the leg spin types but as a newbie it will highlight just how nuanced bowling is- consider there is swing bowling, spin bowling, fast bowling and more and the fielders will all change position according to who is in bat, who is in bowl and the stage of the game. It’s a highly strategic game. Focus on the idea that it’s hard to get a batter out but that your aim is to get as many of them out to stop them scoring runs before the inning is over. The bowler doesn’t get tired as they cannot bowl two overs in a row. They can swap and come back on later. In T20 they can only bowl a max of four overs total. You’re doing great it’s confusing as your brain is programmed differently but it will come to you.

There's not just 1 bowler. Usually it's 3-4 bowlers bowling their overs. So each bowler can have a number of overs they get based on their skills and bowlers do not bowl consecutive overs.

The best way to compare baseball to cricekt in a direct way: In cricket outs are hard and runs are easy in baseball outs are easy and runs are hard in baseball you want to keep your opponent to as few runs as possible, the outs are kind of going to happen no matter what in cricket you want to get your opponents out as fast as possible, the runs are kind of going to happen no matter what.

You have to hit it with your bat. LBW's make cricket so much more exciting because without that rule everyone would just stand in front of the wicket all day with their bat up if they chose to with no fear of getting out. There needs to be a level of fear or risk of getting out each time a ball is delivered. Just a little nuance of that rule within the many many rules of that which I love, of cricket :)

you don't have to stand in front of the wickets, but that would also make it much easier to bowl you out. If you hit the ball with the bat first it is allowed to then hit your body, so orthodox cricket batting stands partially in front of the wicket usually with your toes roughly in line with the middle stump. This allows you to defend the wicket effectively

Tests are a great way to spend the holidays, sitting on the couch with the AC on just relaxing. It's also good to just have them on in the background while you do other tasks. Only Wicket Keeper is allowed to use gloves. 2.Other types (not mentioned in video) to get out Obstructing the field : If the umpire thinks that the batsman has obstructed the fielder/ball that could have made him out(Run out) Handling the ball : The batsman is not allowed to touch the ball unnecessarily. Hit Wicket : Batsman's body part or the bat or any of his gear like the helmet hits the wicket (same as bowled but here it is not the ball that is hitting the wicket) Hit The Ball Twice: If a batsman hits a delivery with his bat and then deliberately hits the ball again for any reason other than to defend his wicket from being broken by the ball. If the ball is bouncing or rolling around near the stumps, the batsman is entitled to knock it away so as to avoid being bowled, but not to score runs. 3.The bowler should not bowl the ball above the batsman's waist height 'without bouncing it'. If he does that, it is a no-ball. 4.The ball after bouncing should not go 'above the head height' of the batman. If it does, it will be called a wide.

And after all that … … the Captain consults with the wicketkeeper and decides which bowler to bowl and sets the field according to the type of ball he will bowl and then the field placements change depend on the state of the wicket (it deteriorates over the 5 days with the balls bouncing on it hundreds of time and there is a greater deviation in the ball leaving the pitch on its flight to the stumps) and whether the batsman at the crease is left handed or right handed and the way he plays a particular type of ball. It is anything but simple to understand being thrown into it at the professional level but much easier when you grow up playing it in your backyard, on the street or at your local suburban club. It’s like playing Chess on a physical level professionally but checkers at a backyard level. My son is in his 50’s and still playing for a Club as a senior even though he has blown out his knees twice. The World T20’s Cricket Tournament is being played at the moment with some matches in the US.

One of the rules with ODI's he didn't cover is that Bowlers can only bowl a maximum of 10 overs in a game, so 60 legal pitches, plus however many Wides and No Balls because they have to be re-bowled. Typically someone bowls for 4-5 overs then fields for a while and may come back later with a fresher arm and probably different batters. In a Test Match there are no limits and a bowler may bowl for 20 or 30 overs, but its not all at once and for Spin Bowlers who bowl some 40mph slower than Pace, its not so bad. Think Knucklers instead of Fast Balls.

In regards to a leg before wicket out, most of the time the batter is not intentionally trying to block the ball with their leg. Once a ball is bolwed it can have a lot of devation during its flight before it reachers the batter (swing bowling or spin bowling) and deceive the batsman as to where the ball will land or the path it will take after it hits the ground. This causes the batter to play a shot that results in them misjudging the ball and thr ball hitting their pads or missing them completely hitting the wicket behind them

One thing he did not mention is that a Bowler is supposed to bowl the ball. Roughly speaking, ball has to be delivered overhead (there are more technical specs like angle of delivery) and ball cannot be thrown like baseball.

Very well done.The only missing thing is that the best batters are at the top of the order. So if you have lost 6 wickets, you proabably need to be a good bit more than halfway to the opponents` total. If you need more than 20 runs off the last two overs with only 2 wickets left, it can get very tense. The fall of two wickets can completely change the situation in the game. It is not very common but there are times when 3 wickets in 3 balls it`s called "doing the hat-trick".

As he said a Test Match lasts up to five days. Those days are usually; 11:00am to 1:00pm they play, 1:00pm to 1:40pm is lunch, 1:40pm to 3:40pm they play again, 3:40pm to 4:00pm is tea and then play to around 6 or 7pm depending on the number of overs bowled. So you usually get six hours or so of play on each day of a Test.

don't let the position chart he showed frighten you. in cricket people don't really tend to have specialist positions, the captain will place people around the field depending on the bowler. The positions are really just where you are around the field in terms of like the hands of a clock, and then how close or far you are from the centre of the field. so the captain might tell you to play "cover" thats at about the 3 oclock position from the batter. He then might tell you to play deep cover (further out) or short cover (further in)
