You should attend the largest SCA event in the world called Pennsic, which will take place in early August of next year in Slippery Rock, PA. The SCA is a non-profit organization of people who do historic reenacting up to and including the 16th century, with most people reenacting the European middle ages. Pennsic has about 12k - 14k participants including massive simulated medieval battles of up to 1k participants. You can try on real armor etc... At Pennsic you will find experts in a variety of areas from medieval armor to dance to games to combat to archery. My specialty is the crossbow and I have trained some people effective use of crossbows. I own a near-replica 16th century crossbow and fencing equipment.

I think the problem with the test in this video is that your weighted vest is only 40lb, but according to RAW, to be *encumbered* it needs to be *_in excess of_* 5x STR, which means *more than* 45lb for 9, 50lb+ for 10 and 55lb+ for 11. As all of you are approx 10-11 STR, if you carry 5x 12 = 60lb then you'll probably see a noticeable reduction in movement.

Being able to hear the counting will make participants move faster because of a subconscious "I don't want to fail". Try doing these tests over a 100' distance and checking a random 30' segment for speed.

Zooming out from this a little, Jurakarok brings up a good point. Moving 30 feet in 6 seconds to calculate how long it takes to move 30 feet in 6 seconds is a very low sample size, which will lead to a lot of variance. For more accurate results, try to move 300 feet in a minute, then divide the result by 10 to find what your average feet per 6 seconds was. And yes, as also stated previously, counting taps into the subconscious, so maybe don't do that either for maximum accuracy.

I think the exhaustion factor is the real reason behind this rule. You might be able to walk/run your normal speed in the short-term but over the course of a day you might have to take extra breaks thus resulting in a slower overall pace.

Except these are the mechanics specifically for combat in this episode, and the combat only goes on for a few seconds canologically in most DnD adventures, so exhaustion isn't going to be a major factor unless it's at the end of a long march. I think the it will affect walking less than the hand book says, but will have more of an impact on getting up from the ground, running and (as the book says) dexterity saving throws

I think people who complained about the jumping measurements aren't quite all there in the head. In a survival or "adventuring" scenario, there are 2 distinct instances I can think of where jumping could be useful: 1. If you're running away from bandit plunderer #2 through a forest and there's a log in your way, it's not going to matter how high you can get your head or how far up your reach goes- all that matters is you get clearance over the log. 2. If you're running away from bandit plunder #2's brother, bandito, and you need to jump to reach a ledge or branch to climb and escape vertically, all that matters is how high your hands can get- head is completely irrelevant. If the rule book doesn't explicitly lay out which aspect of the jump to measure, measuring either is valid.

I've watched quite a few of your real-life to DND videos and always enjoy seeing you guys actually act out what our characters might be doing. I have contemplated doing the same thing with my group of friends to see what our scores would be. I can see that you guys are easily managing to maneuver around in the 6-second time frame under the encumbrance conditions. But I have a feeling the base speed is more accurately reflected over an hour of movement or some larger time span to actually create the average move speed. So while you're doing this for a short. Of time you're relatively unencumbered but if you were to do it for an hour or so similar to how our adventurers Meander around with all of their gear all day long you might actually see a degradation in your movement speed fourth at 6 second time span
@backonlazer791
@backonlazer791 2 жыл бұрын
I still think that the "walking speed" should be either 30 feet in 3 seconds or 60 feet in 6 seconds (with dash). Just walking 30 feet without doing anything else is completely ignoring the action that should in most cases be there.
@BobWorldBuilder
@BobWorldBuilder 2 жыл бұрын
A lot of people say this, so I'm inclined to believe it, but is it actually stated anywhere that a "round" can be anything less than 6 seconds if you only move or only attack? Maybe that's from a previous edition?
@backonlazer791
@backonlazer791 2 жыл бұрын
@@BobWorldBuilder I don't know/think so. A round is always 6 seconds and 10 rounds a minute and so on and so forth in 5th edition. It's just that if you don't use your action that turn you'll be standing around basically doing nothing for the rest of the turn instead of moving slower to fill that time (although I guess that could be possible to fill the time by "casually walking"). The reason why a low level character can only get one hit in despite there being 3 seconds left is that attacking doesn't constitute from just swinging the weapon wildly. You have to wait and look for an opportunity, a break in the enemy's defense, and strike just at the right time. A more experienced character (such as a high level fighter or a monk with very fast reflexes) can find and exploit more of these holes in the enemy's defense and knows more efficient techniques, thus attack multiple times in the same (3 second) period. I'm not sure if that is said anywhere in the rules, but that's how I rationalize it =)

@@BobWorldBuilder Jeremy Crawford has said in Sage Advice that a round is usually (but not always) around 6 seconds and includes many turns that are happening "simultaneously" despite the turn based gameplay of D&D. It also took longer than I care to admit to find this quote in the "Time" paragraph in PHB p. 181: "In combat and other fast-paced situations, the game relies on rounds, a 6-second span of time described in chapter 9."

@@BobWorldBuilder Oh... now I feel a bit stupid. Right at the beginning of Chapter 9: Combat, there's a whole paragraph about Order of Combat which says: "A typical combat encounter is a clash between two sides, a flurry of weapon swings, feints, parries, footwork, and spellcasting. The game organizes the chaos of combat into a cycle of rounds and turns. A round represents about 6 seconds in the game world. During a round, each participant in a battle takes a turn. The order of turns is determined at the beginning of a combat encounter, when everyone rolls initiative. Once everyone has taken a turn, the fight continues to the next round if neither side has defeated the other."

So I’ve only just recently found your videos and I love watching these. One thing though when you said you calculated your movement speed, I would have to watch the video again, but I thought you were just checking to see if the 30’ walking speed was accurate. Maybe you have some monk levels or the mobile feat. One thing you do to “calculate” your movement speed is taking the “dash” action. Dashing is essentially the fastest your character can move under normal conditions in 6s. If you each full sprint for 6s and halve the distance it could give you an idea of your actual movement speed.

Nice and useful video. A little suggestion: when making encumbrance tests, try using a backpack (like the one an adventurer may use to stuff gear inside), rather than that heavy vest. I once tried such test and I noticed that the main problem, rather than weight itself, is the fact that a full backpack follows your movements, expecially the sudden ones, thus making it more difficult to regain balance during a close combat fight or zig zag movements.

Fun video to watch! While I get the logic of basic your strength score on the jumping mechanic (which I personally think gives too powerful of jumps, but it is probably the lowest simple math for it)... I think the real problem is that you are comparing a commoner to a (likely more powerful in almost any way) adventurer. While commoners do have suggested stats, they are intended to carry the idea that they are just as average and basic as they can be compared to the adventurer. So, if anything I'd suggest that the better way to determine your Strength Score, would be to work backwards from your Encumbrance limit. The rule statement is: "If you carry weight in excess of 5 times your Strength score, you are encumbered, which means your speed drops by 10 feet." So, you should go the other way around: When you carry enough weight that it becomes encumbering, divide that by 5 to get your approximate Strength Score. Of course, this runs the real risk of overestimating and suffering real injury, so should only be done if being quite careful!
@DoctorX149

I agree, variant encumberance is a little silly when you boil it down to walking in a straight line. But, when you consider spending speed to stand up, mount a steed, swim, and climb, I think the reduction is more than fair. Also, your combat speed directly correlates to your travel speed- and equipment definitely slows that down, I can attest to that personally! Great video as always though :)

Where you would really notice the encumbrance is with quick movements, and sustained activity over time. By the time you are carrying enough weight that it actually slows down your walking pace over 30 feet, it's going to be so much weight that you probably couldn't carry it for more than a few minutes at most. However, even carrying relatively low amounts of weight are going to tire you out much faster (activity over time) thus slowing down your overall output. Carrying moderate amounts of weight will slow down quick movements, because they effectively require a lot more force than slow steady movements. For a normal walking pace, once you start you don't have to deal with much inertia. However, if you try to make a bunch of sudden dodging or lunging movements, the inertia involved is much much higher. In sports / weight lifting this is the difference between strength and power. Raw strength is simply the ability to apply force which can be a relatively slow movement. Power is the ability to generate force quickly. Jumping is a power movement, lifts like the power clean and variants are power lifts. In physiological terms the difference is slow twitch muscle fiber vs. fast twitch muscle fiber.

I love your videos. They are fun and the banter is great. I want to criticize your walking methods. You do a lot of casual strolling, but this is combat. Theoretically you're approaching something dangerous and wouldn't just casually walk towards it. You would have your shield/weapon up and your weight balanced for proper footwork, walking tactically. Think how a boxer might cross the ring; hands up, feet never crossing. That could explain the discrepancies you're finding. A piece of rebar is a great stand in for a weapon. My brother and I used to princess bride style fence with them and he's a senior knight at medieval times now. Strong foundations and good setup in your video though. Love your channel

As someone who has worn both medieval and modern body armor let me introduce you to the quirks of wearing it. 1) When walking you will start out strong. After 1 mile you will slow and find a steady walking pace that is the least painful. Yes, painful. 2) The saying "ounces feel like pounds" is sooooo true. The amount of stuff that you will shed after your first patrol in it is amazing. Mess kits, liners, utensils, even cutting up MRE's to their base components. 3) Sleeping in armor. YES. In fact, you end up getting this weird addiction to armor. You feel completely naked without it to the point that you'll need to feel something against your chest when you sleep. 4) There are several universal ways of standing while wearing armor. The forward lean while thumbs tucked into the front shoulder straps is the most common. This is to open up an air gap in the front so its cooler and to alleviate some of the weight on the shoulders. 5) Medieval plate is not that heavy. I wore a 14th century kit in the SCA that would qualify as half plate (Churburg kit). The chest was 2mm high carbon and I could lilft it with my pinkie. Historical armor was between 2mm and 3mm thick.

00:51 I don't know how good that way of calculating Strength is, because one can weigh less in proportion to the amount of muscles one has and then jump higher. An Olympic weightlifter or the guys who achieved the record of deadlifting 500 kilograms surely can't jump very high. I think the best method is to use the weight lifting table from D&D 3.5e (or was that table only in Pathfinder 1e?). But of course, I guess it's safer to push yourself to jump as high as you can than to push yourself to lift the heaviest weight you can.

I think it's also important to remember that you're carrying this stuff ergonomically and without having to utilize your arms. I'd reckon a commoner would be carrying a massive bag with a bunch of grains in it or something. and an adventurer probably a backpack with a bunch of stuff, a huge coin purse or five and swords and armor strapped to them

I think a happy middle ground is probably the best for encumbrance. Instead of it being 5x your STR for variant encumbrance I think making it 10x and still working the same as normal encumbrance is the way to go. If you really want to get in the nitty gritty details, it also REALLY depends on how all of this weight is distributed. If you have 50lbs of weight on your torso, you're going to move faster than holding two 25lb weights. If the bulk of your carrying weight is around your torso and then you've got half of it in your pack, which is being held up by straps, I think 5x is too strict. As a 14 year old I went on 30+ mile backpacking hikes with a 50lb pack and it really only hits you going up-hill... so I'm sure a character in a fantasy game in a setting where that's always how they travel could withstand more than that. If I had to go on hikes while holding weights I probably wouldn't have even made it a mile. The pack really helps. That actually gets me thinking... what if you used variant encumbrance as it is by default, but if the character had a backpack they could instead hold 10x their STR instead of 5x?

Love your test and I don't want to rand... but... ^^' 6 seconds is a full round. If during this time you only move it's a Dash action, that you need to be able to repeat round after round, while you've been (most likely) carrying that charge since you walk up that morning.

I get it, but I don't think the rules say a round is shorter if you only move, or only attack for example
@Kyllleur
@Kyllleur 2 жыл бұрын
@@BobWorldBuilder Sure sure. But moving for 6 seconds chill and being like "well, it didn't look like my speed was reduced, so that variant encumbrance rule is quite off" is quite a misrepresentation of the rule's intention. Without taking in count the "you've been carrying that since the morning", I think it would be much better to at least measure speed on a Dash action reenactment, or at best, like someone else suggested, on a longer run, and then you can average your speed, and consider that at X*6seconds where each action was a Dash. I really love the fact that you're trying out in real life those rules, so I would be glad if I can in anyway give an inputs to level up your tests. I did do a lot of marches with crazy gear for countless hours during my military service, and I got some sport education training (and thus performance measurements) and I did feel that some of your tests are misrepresenting a bit the reality and some rules. But GG for the long march you did, and I'm looking forward to watching the next one with some heavy gear! :D

I mean.. It does make sense that your movement is only reduced a little bit, since the rule gives more than one threshold. 5x strength score is encumbered, 10x is heavily, while your max is 15x. So it seems (to me at least) that your movement speed should reduce over time while adding more weight, maybe testing with between 5 and 10 times would be a better measurement of being encumbered?

I think you could try weighing yourself down to see at what point you do slow down. This might prove to be a more accurate way to determine the strength score. The things you can do at different strength scores might be an average of what you should be able to do while unencumbered in regular equipment and armor.

I feel that yeah, encumbrance is an average of the day, but to simulate this as a fresh-faced just put on the weight, wear the weights on the legs. I feel that you haven't really encumbered your walking just by weight on the upper part. It _is_ the same weight, but it's a different set of muscles moving that weight.

The problem with these walking speed videos is that those are the speeds you're supposed to be able to move while doing some other meaningful action within those six seconds. If you're doing nothing but moving in a turn, that means you're using your action to Dash. So really, none of you guys hit the benchmark.

Note: Muscle fiber strength of Modern (post 1600's) European humans is up to SIX times less than pre-1600's humans per anatomical studies of skeletons, especially the musculatures of the European serfs in the country, not so much for the nobility. So it is not that the rules are "wrong", but that the individual muscle fibers of the bodies has weakened. Note this correlates with the muscle fiber strength of primates, which again is SIX times stronger than that of modern humans. It appears that having to work the fields and everything else rather than being served by humans or machines makes a huge difference in the strength of the individual muscle fibers. So no, they LOOKED like skiiny people, but they were pound for pound stronger than ARNOLD... So it is just we have been becoming weaklings for the past 300-400 years.

So you read the stories of ancient people building monuments, or doing incredible physical feats... very likely they are true... we are the equivalent of the passengers on the WALL-E movie ship. So knowing this, rather than a strength of 10, your strength compared to a strength 10 country human from the 1200's would a TWO or THREE.

Carrying 50 lbs in a single block isn't really the same as wearing 50 lbs distributed in armour (say) over your body. Having all the weight on your chest is more likely to make you unstable too. If you see what trained people can do in 40 lbs+ of plate armour it's quite impressive. It's an inertia thing too, you can travel as quickly as normal, but stopping and turning is going to be more of a problem.
