There is so much wrong with Nas’ argument. I'm going to give my opinion. 1. Senegal, Kenya and southern Chicago are unsafe, that is not because of democracy. Democracy does provide you with safety. It keeps you safe from oppression of freedoms, it keeps you safe to a massive extent from dictatorial uprisings. There are bad people everywhere, even in undemocratic nations - China, Iraq, Russia, Libya! No system of government can change the fact that there are good and bad people everywhere. 2. The uneducated person does not have a say in the nuclear policy of US or UK. The government does, and the government is expected to make informed decisions using the smart people. This is a very cherry picked example. If we take a much more common example - say a pothole on the road or the education policy of your child - and there are 3 leaders for your own constituency; Leader A who is good, but does not have interest in your roads or has different views on your childs education. Leader B who you support in your decisions about roads and education and C who is corrupt and launders money. No form of government can get rid of C because C will always creep through - its inevitable. Democracy gives you the opportunity to vote B and your neighbour who believes in different education policies to choose A. Now coming back to the nuclear energy policy argument. The centrally elected government is elected because the people think they are the best choice to choose nuclear power decisions . The views of one person even here may be different from the other, they are not directly voting on the policy itself but they are voting on the best in their opinion. 3. Kenya, Senegal, Pakistan - are they richer? has democracy aided the nation? YES. are they RICH? NO, but they are RICHER. He mentions Kenya and Pakistan and how they are poor and aren’t doing well. I’d argue that without democracy they’d be a lot worse off. They do have a corrupt and flawed democracy but it’s still better than anything else (Failing to mention the fact that there is no successful country without democracy. One could argue China but I’d argue they have failed at freedom) 4. Who chooses the smartest 2000 people. Why these 2000 people. What if there are more equally qualified people. Who tf are these 2000 people and why are they being so authoritative over my actions. I don't like them, what they are doing, the education policy they have chosen for my child or the medical infrastructure that they are changing or the agriculture laws that they are imposing because they are disconnected from reality. 5. He mentions that the country is educated enough for democracy in only 90% of the world, but what about the necessities of the uneducated, the vast majority of most countries. Why are the rich and educated ruling over the poor and uneducated without the say of the latter. In every country, those are the things that matter to the people and the government won't even realise if it is the was Nas said! 6. Don’t even get me started on Hitler - yes, a country democratically elected a leader. This incidentally resulted in the death of 50M people in a massive tragedy. What about Gadaffi, Kim Jong Un, Mao Zedong, the British in India/SA, King Leopold II, Joseph Stalin etc. One bad example doesn’t derail an argument. 7. Now to Trump, I am not pro-Trump but there were definitely a large proportion of very smart people who made good arguments for him. Unlike the media wants you to believe, Trump is by no means Hitler. He had policies which a lot of people agreed with. The media has portrayed everyone who voted Trump as an idiot, but more than half of America cannot be an idiot. Listen to Ben Shapiro/Liz Wheeler/anyone at the Daily Wire. A big reason many people voted Trump was economics. Trump was a free market individual, who was a firm believer in the ways of capitalism, who had largely conservative views, which evidently a lot of America believes in. They did not vote Hillary because they felt she was authoritative in her ways, she did not conservative in her principles and she was not a firm believer in capitalism. You may disagree with them, but that is the point. They think you are wrong and they think their way is better. 8. 13:30, spot on! 9. What are you saying. Rahul Gandhi is not getting tens of millions votes because his name is Gandhi. You are completely misinformed about this almost non-existent issue, coming from an Indian. 10. The farmer is not educated, so thus cannot vote for a better education system, and his mouth must be shut and he cannot govern his own agricultural policies! Ridiculous notion! 11. Why can't the uneducated vote about policies fundamentally affecting them if they lack knowledge on a completely separate topic. And yea! What is your magical fairyland without democracy or dictatorship! 12. 17:03 Every single thing Nuseir said was an idealistic point of view that cannot be executed. Yes, fix education, keep democracy. That actually sounds more realistic than anything you said in this entire video. 13. 17:25 - let us decide, let who decide? let how decide? dEmOcRacY?! What if the smartest people for you are not the smartest people for me?? 14. 18:38 - YES, WITH THE COLLECTIVE PEOPLE! You are contradicting yourself by the second 15. The first statement Nas made, "democracy is not the best form of govt today" He fails to say what is. He then goes on to say that we need a better form of democracy. How? Does he mean we need to redefine democracy as it is today or does he want a totally want a different system. At 10:15, he does mention that there is a better system ,but he doesn't mention it. At 12:00 he mentions - (1) technocrasty - how do technical experts in a field adhere to the necessities of the people. Going to agriculture, technically something might work, it may even work in execution, and it may aid some people through this. It may derail flaws. But what if a majority of the people disagree or are at a disadvantage by this. And (2) epistocrasty, refer point 4

I recommend reading the book “intelligence trap” that shows how intelligent people are often not the people that make the smartest / best decisions. Also it is a big jump to say that the smartest people will make the decisions that are best for the common good. Intelligence at most times work to benefit the self (yes, like in companies). Not saying here that we should stop exploring other types of governance! This was still a great discussion!
@catarinaalves51132 жыл бұрын
Some people argue for example that a test (like the one Nas suggested) could be a way to nudge people to get informed before voting. But in this other discussion I participated the suggestion was more that this test if passed gave 2 votes instead of 1. Some people also argue that the weight of a vote from an elderly person should be smaller (this is more for aged population countries), since an aging population can compromise the future of younger generation (think of climate change for example).

I live in a democracy in Nigeria. It doesn't work. 33% of people are unemployed; 95% of 18-24-year-olds believe the country is going the wrong direction; it is also one of the most unsafe countries in the world. Yet, we have an elected government. The decision to put in Buhari in 2015 would've cost thousands, if not millions, their lives directly and indirectly. Correcting the terrible policies will require over a decade to fix assuming there aren't any economic shocks during the intervening period. So, when the other guy says democracy gives you the chance to change bad decisions, it doesn't account for the lives destroyed. Broadening it out other African countries, lots of them haven't experienced the supposed benefits of democracy. This is partly why West Africa is slowly experiencing the incidence of coups. Finally, before you attribute all these failures in democracy to corruption - since that seems to be the only lens people use to analyse African countries - consider that these are poor, uneducated, ethnically-divided countries. These make it difficult to arrive at rational decisions; have an effective bureaucracy; develop good social cohesion needed to create a strong national identity; and credibly fight graft because politicians and mandarins know that there aren't better private sector jobs out there and the need to run subsequent elections.

7:48 killed it I was just thinking the same because a country which I came from which India and here many time I seen that governments are made not because of their good policy is just because the majority like it which is which is wrong they bring the religion or cast in the elections they support the majority which bring them more votes and this is specially the case in the south Asian country yes it can be true that even less educated person can take a right decision but most of the time if the leaders are not that much educated it has been found that day are not able to take right decisions over education which is the most important thing in a country and that brings me to a second point we have to improve education to make democracy better and for that we have to remove democracy and bring a better form of Government which can do more better things and bring more better policy which can run a country better so democracy is good but when the peoples have the brain to know what is right and what is wrong and if they are not educated then they can be easily manipulated which is being done in all the South Asian countries for many years the reason that why South Asian countries are not improving that much democracy works in European countries democracy works in American countries but it can't be works in every part of the world because every part of the world doesn't have the same knowledge and education so I think nas is right by the way I I love it keep making more debates ❤️

I totally agree with Nas, although i was in the favour of democracy before, now i see that people are influenced by the beliefs and bribes the government offers us. The gov just want to be the leader, and if people has the power to ellect them they will do what we want. But people will be drived but wants rather than focus on needs. Its like, if u have to choose between two people in which one allows you to be lazy and eat junk all day, the other says to work hard and be healthy. You are bound to chooss the one who is giving u more benefit. This is just an example. So yes, educated people should be allowed to vote, not farmers and the rest cuz they go by names, bribes, beliefs not the real reason for a leadership. But, one very important thing in democracy is to say NO. If hitler had democracy back than rather than dictatorship then he would have been afraid of losing his position as a leader bc people would have said no. With democracy we get this power. However, like with hitler...the jews didnt had the power to say no. Many of us in this day dont have it too bc of the beliefs, the uneducated peopls who vote driven by just their opinions not facts. So basically democracy is dictatorship
@mz63672 жыл бұрын
I totally support the idea that certain people should have more than one voice and stronger influence on the country based on their education and those people have worked and studied harder than others so it's totally fair but I'm not a big fan of running the country but one person all the population should have influence on the country but in a way the satisfies the educated ones who have worked and studied harder .

I go against Democracy even though its applied in our country (Nigeria) because most of people that engage in the election don't their rights and the kind of way the election is done is terrible. Firstly there's Primary Election in which the delegates of a certain party have to choose the one to represent the party after each party chooses its representative then the Secondary Election takes place. What Democracy does in here, is that, it sort of let the top people in the country have more power than the civilians.

@greenlime87268 күн бұрын
The problem with this debate is that its not really clear what options do we have except democracy? If democracy is intended only as a western style representative democracy sometimes with some elements of direct democracy then of course there are a lot of better alternatives that has never been tried(and some even tried and worked but no one really implemented them). But if the alternative to a democracy is an autocraticy or pure technocracy than I am definitely on the side of pro democracy or at least some hybrid systems. Because autocracy never worked well with some little exceptions and pure technocracy will transform into oligarchy or dictatorship even if it'll initially work(look at China).

Nas: “The idea of Democracy is that 1 Vote= 1 say is Flawed because all voices are not equal in value" Me: It's true. Just think for a sec - Is the vote from a slum taken by an uneducated person with nothing to consideration same as the a good officer's vote who has a good education and has taken every single thing into consideration? What Nuseir is saying is true and what Alex is saying is also true. It's true that a country can't develop under dictatorship but it is also true that a country can't develop fast and enough under 'today's' democracy. When first Telephone was invented, people thought it's the best but through time it has changed and that isn't the case anymore. It should also be the same thing with democracy. The democracy we know today has probably changed over time but not enough to cope with today's world. We need to rebuild Democracy and make it better and that format of building the democracy again already exists in the thing we know as a 'Industry'
@painay89892 жыл бұрын
People are saying how the winner is chosen by the method of democracy , it sure is!! It is chosen with better form of voting system. The first round was just blind voting. It has people’s personal feelings in it. Then the voters were educated by both sides of the argument. Then they are left to do some rational thinking on who is better. So basically the small crowd is first made to reach to the standard that they are capable of rationally voting. In the real world it is impossible to make the whole population of the country educated on specific topics like this. So the most ideal way is check whether the vote of each voter should have a saying by testing them with some sort of standardized test. I think i want to introduce another form of government. Let the government test you whether your vote should be counted 1/5 of a vote, 1/3 of a vote or a whole vote depending on the test results. That way even though not everyone’s vote is counted equally, it also doesn’t mean your right to vote as a citizen doesn’t matter at all.

The debate was more managed democracy VS full democracy. Not for or against democracy. Great debate though! Edit: Nas should've made the biggest argument against democracy: people always vote for their best interests. Their best interests is not always the best for the country. But they don't care. As long as they get the best deal. If you vote left you usually vote for more government spending on welfare and climate while not caring about the government debt. And if you vote right you usually vote for more isolationalism. "Bring back the factories", "stop immigration". And I only have to point at Brexit to show what a mess that can be. There where people saying that they reather see their country become poorer during Brexit than staying in Europe. So democracy can hurt a nation when everyone cares more about their Ideal version of the nation instead of reality. And worse they usually think they are making the nation better while it is financially bleeding because of them.

My opinions are mixed on one side I think democracy is bad as In India governments give money to poor people for their vote but on the other side democracy is the best as it puts the decision into our hands and we have power to decide the future of our country

Democracy is not harmful. I'm from Turkey and people always vote racists and bigots. We intellecuals vote the best party, but ingorent more. Also, I know same problem are valid for countries like Australia.

Yeah, Democracy is actually fooling everyone(Citizens) that they have the voice but, in reality the person who have more money and influence got to have the government position as if he represents the marginalized sector even if the truth is he/she only wants more power and connections to boost his business interest to get even richer!!! ✌️✌️✌️

Let me just start off by saying that democracy is flawed and outdated. However the solution put up by Nuseir to have the most intelligent people take the decisions is a hard pill to swallow for me personally. Isn't it a bit pragmatic to say that the decisions of the most intelligent people are the best for each and every citizen bin a country? I agree that it's not realistic to educate the entire population but what we can do is educate the to-be-leaders for a start. To contest for a ministerial post, a citizen must have atleast a basic qualification in the said field and also get trained in public policy/governance/politics. What this would do, is present only elligible choices for the vote bank. The further refinement would be carried out via media. The Fourth estate needs to undergo a revolution to bring out the unbiased truth. On the other end of this system of checks and balances is the Fifth Estate, Channels like Nas Debates. It's a difficult path but one thing I've noticed in the 21st century is that the youth of today aren't afraid of calling out the bad calls. So I believe we will get there eventually.

We should make vote based on the internet that can evaluate the president perfomance every 1 month like company,the President is the CEO, and the tax payers is the shareholders
