So how did you go from a dental assistant to a hygienist? Did you have to take extra classes to get into the hygiene program.? How did you go about this . I’d love to know . I literally just got a 4 year degree and now I’m looking into the dental filed because I was always interested. I feel like I’m going backwards but I do know that I have Intrest I can’t take my degree back . But the fear of money and time just makes me procrastinate getting started.

Dental assitants do alot more then just pass intruments and sterlize and clean. it veries from state to state what you can and cant do. Where i am located i place dental dams,fabriacte temporeries, study models, sealents, pack retraction cord, apply dental materials, coronal polish etc. So when people say an assiant just “Cleans” the room just know there is almost more to it then just cleaning a room!

I absolutely agree with you. I am a DA too and we do sooooooo much more than just cleaning. It’s very sad that we get paid the least.

Do Employers offer insurance? Dental insurance medical insurance?? and if u work for a dental office is your dental insurance ever free?? Do u ever get free dental work done??

I have read on a lot of online forums that there are too many dental hygienists and not enough jobs. Is it true that it’s very hard to find a full time hygienist job And that the number of hygienist greatly exceeds the number of job positions?

How did you go to school to become a hygienist while you were working as a dental assistant? If you worked full time as a DA, how did you attend classes assuming they were in the mornings on weekdays? Thanks!!!

Around here it’s a full program during the day yes :) you could work evening shifts as an assistant or weekend s

Hi, I have a question. I see for a lot of schools to get accepted into hygiene school, there are points added for being CDA certified and an assistant. Do you think it’s possible to not assist and get into hygiene school? I’m looking for office experience to maybe give me a leg up, but am getting discouraged that they will want me to assist before.

yes it's possible! You don't have to be an assistant prior to hygiene..at least not here :)
