I played in what is now known as the WIAC and can assure you that players on each team were at a minimum all-conference in high school, many all region, and some all-state. Essentially, they might be a couple inches shorter and/or 10 to 20lbs lighter than their D1 counterparts. Some were late bloomers, some underrecruited, and some were just not quick, fast, or strong enough to play D1.

Richie, I think you did a great job with this video. One thing you didn't mention is that many D-3 schools are more selective than the D-1 and D-2 schools offering scholarships. I almost put "scholarships" because at a lot of D-2 schools the partial scholarship given is just a tuition discount they may have gotten anyway. You mention great friendships and brotherhood among players and that is indeed special, but the networks you can establish in smaller schools are often key to opportunities in the work world. Finally, many players who were overshadowed in high school get their shot at D-3. They may have not been a starter, but they have skills and small college ball is a way to stay with your passion to play. Final word GET YOUR DEGREE!

I was a 5'7" 170lb DB myself. I actually care more about the North Central game as any other college game on a weekly basis, I used to be a part of the Quarterback Club and sat in the tent, but now that I live out of state I watch every week on streaming, part of that is that NCC is a regular D3 playoff team.

The D3 guys that get drafted, they usually end up at the D3 level for a couple of reason's. Football may have not been their sole focus in high school, and thus they haven't reached their potential yet, and D1 colleges don't scout smaller high school players as much when they aren't playing up to the potential of a low caliber D1 athlete. Another reason for a player like Ryan Ramczyk initially, was he didn't want to be far away from home, and he didn't want to live the D1 lifestyle coming out of high school. The stress and expectations generally aren't as high at the D3 level compared to the D1 level. I know a few guys that play D1 and how the prepare throughout the year is almost like a job. I also see a lot of D3 players (UW-Whitewater), and the whole atmosphere of how they prepare feels more laid back than at the D1 level. I feel like the guys that get drafted from the D3 level don't truly realize their potential until their 3rd year at the college level.

I just this year found out about Div 3 football after I found out about all the money that is involved in Div1 and to a lesser extent Div 2 football. I don't have any favorites yet and just randomly watch and enjoy game videos of Div 3 games. I find the football just as exciting as Div 1 and the players display a very high degree of football skills. The difference for me is that Div 3 players are not getting paid to play but play for the love of the game and that is what makes it special. Watching pro football or Div 1 pro potential players is exciting but not the same as watching guys who are mostly motivated because they want to get a college degree and also play competitive football.

I think some players choose a D3 school for academic reasons, even if they could play at a higher level. Most players are simply not going to the NFL so it's smart to make the most out of your education. And it could be that a D3 school has a better program for their major, or maybe they just like the atmosphere more.

Itaca seats 5500. When they play each other,13,000 plus are there. If they do move to D2, then most of the conference is going to struggle heavily. UW-Whitewater has played D2 schools over the course of the past 10 years and have beaten them or come close to beating them, but IMO only 2-3 of the WIAC teams can hold up to D2 schools right now.

That is definitely a yes. UW-Whitewater which is one of the better D3 teams has a lot of DE's for example that weigh 225 - 255 pounds. Football is kind of a weird sport in that once you leave college, you can never really play it again in the same way as a graduated adult. If you love baseball, you can absolutely put together a baseball team. Tennis is of course easy to keep playing. Soccer, basketball, etc. All of these you can easily find adult leagues to play in. But football requires so many players, so much equipment, etc. that it seems like adult leagues are almost non-existent. A quick look around USA Football in my area shows youth leagues, flag football, and school leagues. So I have huge respect to the players playing D3 because they want to play for as long as possible before football unfortunately becomes a thing of the past for them.

UW-Whitewater, UW-LaCrosse, and UW-Platteville are essentially D2 schools depending on the sport. If 1 or multiple teams left to become D2 schools, the whole conference would probably collapse, and realignment would need to occur. There is only one D1 school in Wisconsin that has football, so if a kid doesn't receive a scholarship from there they go and play in the Dakota's, Minnesota, Illinois, Iowa, or at the D3 level.
