Great stuff mate, exciting things happening in Sunderland keel square, riverside Sunderland & also down roker & seaburn seafront you should try down there as there are few new bars opened, these things happen, blacks corner tram, the stack is great, house of zen

The bridge hotel is in a good spot as that part of town is getting renovated with housing and shops, looks a bit crap at the minute tho. The tavern and the botanist is popular aswell.

if you like old school pubs as you say, next time you're in Sunderland try the Dun Cow, Ship Isis, Kings Arms (in that order) and finish off at Wildfire Pizza for the best pizza in the north east!
