Okay, if I had to decide which 5 Elvissongs I would take with me to a lonely island, then maybe they would be "The wonder of you", "Can't help falling in love", "Love me tonight", "I'll never know" and "Stand by me".

If Elvis doesn't deserve the crown as the king of rock and roll, can somebody tell me who does? Did anyone else completely change music like he did back in the 50s? Did anyone else open as many doors for other performers as he did? Has anyone else sold a billion records worldwide as he has? Has anyone else held onto their popularity, or indeed even become more popular 40+ years after their death?That's a big fat NO! to all of the above, and to even more. Nobody is taking that crown from Elvis , nor can they come close to doing it. Long live THE king of rock and roll, Elvis Presley!

It was easy to make it mainstream back then when you were white, like Elvis did. He did nothing nor created nothing. He just copied a sound the mainstream at the time(whites) didn't really like because it was a black thing and black styles have always been oppressed until a white man steals them and makes it "theirs". In short, Elvis just had it easy and did nothing nor invented nothing. He's the king to white folks, but the rest of us know there is no king as too many black artist way before him added to the style to create rock and roll.

An excellent article Mary Patricia, well researched but with an intriguing narrative. As a fan approaching 65, I know that when I saw Elvis in concert at the Riverfront Colisseum Cincinnati and Market Square Arena in June 1977, I was struck by how white and middle aged Elvis's audience was. Yet this was the same performer who encompassed black music, style and culture when he moved to Memphis at age 13 in 1948. He was a race music pioneer who introduced rhythm'n'blues to white teens at a time where they were crying out for a music they could call their own. That should be his legacy.

I've been a fan of Elvis since 1956 when the RnR Big Bang, led by EP, hit Britain...ever since then some of those brilliant "originals" have self proclaimed themselves "king"...except Elvis...Personally, for me, they're all kings and I love them all for introducing such incredible music to our then young ears...but if Richard or Chuck or whoever wanted to fight over it that was up to them...it never bothered me and as the years went by I came to realise and accept anyway that Elvis was so much more than just RnR...A story I like, and one which, for me. settles the argument...When the great Fats Domino came to see Elvis in Las Vegas, after introducing him Elvis said words to the affect that "This man is the real King of RnR"...that'll do for me....apart from anything else, Fats had had RnR/RnB hits since the 1940s.

Thank you for sharing this amazing message.. I am of the older group, probably a 2nd generation fan still.. I was 12 when I saw Elvis at Madison Square Garden.. My whole world lit up and it changed my life forever.. Before that, I'd sit down to watch an Elvis movie as an 8 year old coming home from school. I wasn't interested in dramatic plot design. Elvis got the girl, won the race, and beat up the other guy who wanted the girl.. Him and the original Batman were my super hero's. BTW, Elvis was the only real life super hero.. From N.Y, and now living in Vegas, I obsess on his future legacy.. Last month I got a deal at the Southpoint Hotel and Casino to rent out a theater for 3 days.. We are talking real good deal... I'm not a rich man! I treated 1000 students ages 14-18 to see the new Baz movie.. Now, 25 percent of them are curious about learning more about Elvis, and at least 25 percent report they are new fans.. Thank you for what you do.. Your voice will resonate in ways that will capture the younger and future generations.. My fantasy is that I was Jeff Bezos of Amazon, and could rent out 5 thousand theaters, and invite 50 million High Schoolers and middle schoolers to see the movie. Would be a Global invitation because in the USA alone, we don't have 50 million students.. That would change the world forever and for the better.. If I hit Mega Ball, I will be knocking on your door...

No particular recording artist is the ruler or "king of rock and roll." It's a general sound or genre that progressively evolved and was expanded on by various musicians. Some artists may have been more popular and prolific than others, but they didn't rule over the contributors. They were all like mutual ambassadors of rock and roll.

When people dispute Elvis being the King, they use the argument that he was not the creator or the first. In fact, he did help create Rock and Roll. More importantly, the title "King" refers to the best or the greatest. It does not refer to the first. He is The King. It's not even close. He's the greatest. Let's take it straight from Chuck Berry: "Describe Elvis? The greatest whoever was, is or ever will be." Let's take it from BB King: "...They didn't make a mistake when they called him The King." And now from Springsteen: "There have been a lot of tough guys. There have been pretenders. And there have been contenders. But there is only one King...That Elvis, man, he is all there is. There ain't no more. Everything starts and ends with him. He wrote the book. But for him, I'd be selling encyclopedias right now. There have been a lotta tough guys. There have been pretenders. And there have been contenders. But there is only one king."

Great video! On top of what you are saying, I always think about when people say white kids had no access to black music or never heard it. This is obviously partially true and because it was looked down on by adults. Also, it wasn't as all around popular, so younger white kids didn't really hear black music. BUT - Elvis was white and did also hear black music on the radio (and also in person). He couldn't have been the only one. I'm sure there were other white kids that heard black blues and r&b on the radio growing up. Some types of music are not as easy to access, though, so Elvis did help it gain more popularity. I mean, I currently listen to a ton of new music that isn't as easy to access and doesn't get played on the radio because it's not "popular" - but I still hear it and it's still great!
@weberv412 жыл бұрын
And some people call him the King, not necessarily because he "invented" it or was one of the first to contribute to rock n roll, but because a lot of people think he was the best at it. I mean, I grew up listening to Oldies music thanks to my Dad - all artists equally, Elvis, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, etc....and I liked them all! But there was always something about Elvis and his voice that was special to me (even before I ever saw what he looked like or saw a video of him performing). I've researched and listened to a ton of old musical artists, and Elvis just seemed like there was something more, something special compared to them all.

He still has 12,000 to 15,000 a week visit Graceland. Just shows he is still the King.

Firstly, American music forms: Spirituals, Blues, Ragtime, Jazz, Country, Gospel, Bluegrass, Folk, R&B, Doo-Wop, Soul, Funk, Disco, Punk, House, Rap and Hip Hop and of course 'ROCK N ROLL'---all enjoy well documented African American roots coupled with undeniable African American influence. Notably and worth mentioning is that on 5-19-1956 in a story that appeared in numerous publications, they referred to Presley as the fledgling king of 'Rock n Roll'. Ironically, Presley himself declined that noble title. However, after his first opening in Las Vegas, a reporter referred to him as "the king" in a press conference, which prompted Presley to point to the back of the room and say "No, that's the real King of Rock n Roll". He had assertively and humbly pointed to Fats Domino. But whether Presley pointed to Mr. Domino or perhaps had it been Chuck Berry or Little Richard or Bo Diddley or Sister Rosetta Tharpe or Big Joe Turner or Big Mama Thornton et. al. that he had pointed to---collectively and in all actuality he was pointing to African Americans in general regarding our history and our culture.

In the 1960s the media called Elvis "king of pop". There are original reports from the 60s. The record industry officially crowned Elvis (in the 90s) the "King of music". I think Elvis was just the greatest.

Just to set the record straight, Elvis was NOT an R& B artist. He only covered some songs, just as he did with country, pop, ballads and so forth. Note: he always covered R&B AFTER the original artist already had their own hit with it. So he “took” nothing from anyone. Not his fault if the public liked his version better. Also, Rock & roll is not always the same as R&B. Rather, It is Country music mixed with blues is what made rock & roll the final version Example, little Richards comment, he was initially angry Elvis payed him a tribute and sang tutti fruiti is crazy. What little Richard, and the modern Appropriation crowd are saying is that a non African American is not permitted to cover an R&b song. But the reverse has been true (Tina Turner, Sammy Davis, etc singing white songs). and no one complained of it I do agree with BBking for example, he said once a song has been put out there, it’s open game for anyone to cover it Elvis had many many “components” of his music..... country, R&b, Spanish flavored, opera, German music, gospel (white & black) and pop. That’s where he accepted and his completion didn’t. He offered us a cornucopia of music all put in a blender Like many R&B artists said, Elvis DEsegregated music..... He also “injected” something into black music (see comments by James brown, Jackie Wilson, Rufus Thomas, Bobby Womack, Mohammed Ali) But none of these other genres can claim Elvis as their own..... they are only pieces of a puzzle that make up Elvis. In turn, Elvis fused them all together, something no one else did He brought us together

As much as I can remember when ELVIS was alive NO ONE told him that he STOLE their music,I'm 64 and I know , BUT after he died here comes the IRS AND PEOPLE saying he stole black music and did not pay taxes, NOT only did he pay his taxes he OVER PAID HIS TAXES, and as far as stealing someone's music, NO he took what he heard and made it his style what he felt in his soul, the ONLY reason people want to say he stole from them is because if you can't compete with someone you have to make up lies to level the playing field, after he opened the door to this kind of music it SURE LOOKS LIKE ALOT OF PEOPLE WERE AND ARE STILL COPYING HIM, so who stole from WHO, KING ELVIS.

The King of Rock n Roll title was given to Elvis in the 50s, mid 1956 to be precice and was mainly because that is all he sung during that time and up until he went into the army. He was a RnR singer period, and the most famous one at that. When he came out of the army though he started to sing all types of musical genres, and topped the various different musical genre charts as well until his death. So not being just a RnR singer any more, also becoming the most popular and highest paid movie star of his time, and finally the biggest live act in the US and most wanted live act on the planet.........the title "king of rock n roll" was way to limited, and thus was unofficially dropped, for the most famous human being on the planet. So, from the early 60s onward he was, is and always will be just plainly, "The King" because whatever he did, whether music, movies or live performance, he conquered. Others can claim to be called king of this or king of that etc. BUT there will only ever be one who is and will be.........The King.

Elvis didn't have white privilege. Poorer than most people at the time. He just had lots of luck on his side. Lots...ELVIS was cooler than cool. In 1000 years all others will be forgotten...ELVIS will still be around...
