Erick Sermon has sought to give good advice about the business aspect of rap music from the very beginning! You can go back to his interviews on Yo! MTV Raps and he's saying the exact same thing about the importance of building a library of songs that will have staying power. I'll never forget when he said "And make sure to pay your taxes!". No one was talking like that then or now, but it shows why he has been successful financially in a cutthroat business. I have tremendous respect for Erick Sermon, not just because of the amazing music that he's made with EPMD, but also because of the fact that he tries to inspire others with his good advice. Some people are successful because they focus solely on themselves, but its a testament to someone's character when they are successful and try to lift others up with them. If we're smart, we'll listen. If we're dumb, we'll keep making songs that last less than two minutes each just for streaming numbers that are forgettable within a week. Which leads to the question, are you good enough to make a song with staying power, or are making a minute and a half long garbage songs because that's all you're capable of doing?
