Only Allah subhanahu wataala is eternal. Eternal means no beginning and no ending. Only Allah can be eternal, since He is the Creator of all things. Hell can be everlasting. Eternal and everlasting are not the same. Everlasting means no ending, but a beginning.

It’s hard for me to get my head around eternal Hell because how could one enjoy eternal Heaven knowing that a lot of people are being punished in Hell eternally? I am just asking a question of course, may God protect me from error.

Let the Quran speak . "And they say, "Never will the Fire touch us, except for a few days." Say, "Have you taken a covenant with Allah ? For Allah will never break His covenant. Or do you say about Allah that which you do not know?" Yes, whoever earns evil and his sin has encompassed him - those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide therein eternally. But they who believe and do righteous deeds - those are the companions of Paradise; they will abide therein eternally." Quran 2:80-82

1 - In Soorat al-Nisa, where He says (interpretation of the meaning): “Verily, those who disbelieve and did wrong [by concealing the truth about Prophet Muhammad and his message of true Islamic Monotheism written in the Tawraatt (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel) with them]; Allaah will not forgive them, nor will He guide them to any way. Except the way of Hell, to dwell therein forever” [al-Nisa’ 4:168-169] 2 - In Soorat al-Ahzaab, where He says (interpretation of the meaning): “Verily, Allaah has cursed the disbelievers, and has prepared for them a flaming Fire (Hell) Wherein they will abide for ever” [al-Ahzaab 33:64] 3 - In Soorat al-Jinn, where He says (interpretation of the meaning): “and whosoever disobeys Allaah and His Messenger, then verily, for him is the fire of Hell, he shall dwell therein forever” [al-Jinn 72:23] If Allaah had mentioned the eternal nature of Hell in one place, that would have been sufficient, so how about if He has mentioned it in three places? It is strange that a group of scholars are of the view that Hell will cease to exist, based on false arguments which go against what is indicated by the Qur’aan and Sunnah, and they misinterpreted the meanings of the Qur’aan and Sunnah and said that the words “dwell therein forever” mean for as long as it exists.

Hellfire is not eternal, the word "khalidina" and "abad" it also means for a long time. read also V.128 An-naam in arabic: ila macha allahu which means "except what God wants" (speaking of the length of stay in hell) also in v.107 and 108 (Hud) he says the same thing v23 (an-naba) the prophet mohamed talked about the last men in the hellfire who after he go in paradise. The verse 40 (Al-araf) and also When it says that Allah has forbidden paradise to the associates speaks of the day of judgment where Allah will never let the infidels enter paradise, but after having suffered centuries in hell they will come out. the verse where Allah says that they will not come out of the fire he says "kharijina" not "yukhraju" which is not the same thing. "yukhraju" means that they will never go out and this is said only for those in heaven. God wrote in a book that mercy precedes my anger and in a verse of the Koran he says that his mercy embraces everything

As we know that we do sin because of our own will, meaning we have choice between right and wrong. We also know that Satan is also responsible for our actions because we give in to his evil temptation. But still we are responsible for the action because we had a choice. So based on how it is difficult to make a choice, will hell be eternall? Doesn't the Quran state that his mercy encompasses everything?

Before we argue if hell is eternal or not, here are some interesting things that people may want to consider --- about the concept of "time" There are a lot of videos documenting NDEs in youtube. You might not agree with the subjective conclusion formulated by the experiencer, but there are hints and clues in it. Many said they have been on the "other side" -- strikingly, their perception of time ranged from a quite a duration/a few months .... or for a very very long time. The actual time-frame of the NDE event, according to the time scale of this reality, was invariably and comparably shorter, whenever the comparison was made by the experiencer. Generally speaking, when these ppl were on the "other side", some explicitly said the concept of time is really hard for them to grasp anymore, to the extent, they say time seemed non existent . This is in agreement with the widely discussed (nowadays) notion that time is somewhat an illusion or only a product of mental construct. It is also now a widely known topic discussed in quantum mechanics that reality is actually what you make of it. If you note those who had been to hell in their NDE, some have said -- he / she himself "become" hell. It is hard to fathom this, but that is what was said by a few of those who experienced hell(ish) state So, considering these issues, I think arguing about "hell is eternal or not" is going to be rather "off the point". Reality (and the relative time) on the other side is dependent on the person himself, ie the essence/quality of the person will become the manifested reality on the other side. This is why Quran stated that people can be "encircled" by their own deeds on the other side 39:48 And the evil of what they wrought shall become plain to them, and the very thing they mocked at shall beset them. [Literal translation (word by word): And will become apparent to them (the) evils (of) what they earned, and will surround them what they used to [in it] mock] So, this issue of "how long" a person will be in hell might be kind of tricky to be defined in an absolute manner, considering the reality on the other side is dependent on the person own baggage or state of (spiritual) purity Whether it is for a short or long time, people might still argue that it is something of a non-benevolent God to place people in such miserable "state" of existence. However, God says in the Quran that mankind has made a covenant with Him and a believer should be wary of this, not judging such issue in a simplistic manner In 2:80, Quran mentioned: And they say: The Fire (of punishment) will not touch us save for a certain number of days. Say: Have ye received a covenant from Allah - truly Allah will not break His covenant - or tell ye concerning Allah that which ye know not? You may wish to see YT video by Nancy Rhyne, a skeptic, who had an NDE, and her confirmation of making the "agreement" / covenant At many places in the Quran, it highlighted such "covenant" issue (that we have signed prior to this).. and the verses often symbolized this by saying that we ourselves "have sent forth" our hands for such an agreement ... (google search "quran hands have sent forth") I'm sure these NDE videos are rather controversial to many Musliims and Christians themselves (and skeptics of various denomination). Quran is clear about God being the ultimate / final judge (eg 48:14 ...He forgives whom He wills and punishes whom He wills). So my advice is that Muslims should be wary of this and should not be too judgemental of whatever things said/interpreted by non-Muslims and leave the controversial issues as it is ie "agree to disagree" 5:48....... . If God had willed, He would have made you one nation; but that He may try you in what has come to you. So be you forward in good works; unto God shall you return, all together; and He will tell you of that whereon you were at variance.

Allah SHOWS NO MERCY when he permits earthquakes to occur. All the mountains he placed on earth DO NOT PREVENT EARTHQUAKES, SO ALLAH FAILED (even though he is allegedly all-powerful). Again, read Koran 32:10-11.

Heaven has longer time than Hell. As for Hell is "kholiidiina fiiha". But for Heaven is "Kholiidiina fiiha ABADAN". So Hell is not eternal, but has a very looonngg time period. But Heaven is eternel. And that all human kind will gather in the merciful of Allah. But those who did syirk will be in Hell in a very very loonngg...time. Allah merciful will overcome His angry. IMHO. 🙏

@@kbarokut2010 Because Allah says that he is "All-Merciful". After seeing people burn in Hell, even we humans will be moved to pity and compassion. We will be Merciful towards them, God is called as Most Merciful. Going by that, God has to be infinitely More Merciful than us. As a result, It won't make sense for God to punish them for eternity. God also expresses sadness in mentioning Hell in Quran.

@Zainab Iqbal bro..I never posted the verse earlier. I just told there is a verse in relation to hell which says except as your Lord wills. I will delete that comment if you really feel I twisted the verses as I have no intention in the least as I fear Allah more than anything. The below are verses which some scholars including Tabari have interpreted. For Paradise Allah has promised that it will not stoped, but for hell even though it's mentioned forever or eternity it doesn't say Allah promised it will never end ( just like for Paradise) if you get what I am saying. Those Scholars aren't saying it means it is confirmed that Hellfire is not forever there is a verse which says they will abide therein for ages but with the other verses we simply don't know for sure how long it will last. @Zainab Iqbal yes your definition of Shirk is one definition. But is Shirk same as not accepting Islam ...is a person who doesn't worship Idols or any partners to Allah committed Shirk? It is Kufr but is it Shirk

As you said except Allah willeth, doesn't say for sure Allah will forgive them at some very very later time...but it does give a indication by Scholars as in the article I sent you that Allah might decide something else besides forever if he Allah Willeth, only Allah knows best... even Dr Zakir Naik points out that Abadan of Hell is not the exactly same as in Abadan of heaven where Allah promised there is no stop for believers in paradise. Regarding The article I shared you Ibn tabarari mentions that Hell at one point ceases to exist and nothing will remain in it, I don't know from which source or authentic tradition he is referring, would like to know the source.

@Zainab Iqbal when reading the description of hell it's so scary 🙁 that besides doing obligatory worship, I try my best to do deeds which act Sadaqah Jariyah like donating for Mosque, helping Orphans with Islamic education and pray to Allah for righteous Children for their and our wellbeing. Also keep reciting Darood as that will help us most in intercession during Qiyamah. I have given my kid the best Islamic education of Quran and others because Akhirah is everything and Duniyah is nothing. May Allah be merciful with all Muslims and Ummah of Mohammed and save all from Hellfire.

Hell is eternal for disbelievers. As for believers that sinned example "major sins" and they didn't repent in this world. They will enter hell fire to be purified. Later they will be taken out of hell to enter paradise.

ʻabd allāh that verse you quoted is in regards to the disbelievers. They will abide eternally in hellfire, as for Muslim sinners who didn't commit kufr, though they committed major sins and didn't repent, the prophet Muhammad s.a.w has told us in the Hadith what will happen to them.

zilverster1 No that's not true. What I've meant by disbelievers in this sense are people who the message of Islam had reached them but they arrogantly rejected. As for those that the message never got to them Allah says what happens to them here you go. Allaah says“… And We never punish until We have sent a Messenger (to give warning).” [al-Israa’ 17:15]. Final Prophet that's a relief. But I was brought up a catholic, rejected the bible when I was twelve. Then at 20 I studied Hinduism in depth when I was in India for a few months in several ashrams. I found several aspects of hinduism that helped me understand life and loving indiscriminately. After that I studied Buddhism and Sikhism for a while. Sikhism lead me to the Quran, since Sikhism is a mixture of Islam and hinduism. So I read the Quran and had talks with Imams in Holland. All these religions share the same characteristics. They all predict what will happen when we die, and they all tell what to do and what not to do. It doesn't make sense to me to follow any of these dogmas. What does make sense to me is to look into my own thinking. It is called jnana in hinduism. It tells that suffering begins with identification. This is the path that fulfills my life and offers me a way to love indiscriminately and bear suffering. Do I go to the Muslim hell now?

Allaah says (translation): “They will long to get out of the Fire, but never will they get out therefrom; and theirs will be a lasting torment” [al-Maa'idah 5:37] “(The torment) will not be lightened for them, and they will be plunged into destruction with deep regrets, sorrows and in despair therein” [al-Zukhruf 43:75] al-Hijr 15:48] “And they will never get out of the Fire” [al-Baqarah 2:167] It will be said, ‘O people of Hell, do you recognize this?’ They will crane their necks and look, and will say, ‘Yes, it is death.’ Then the command will be issued and it will be slaughtered. Then it will be said, ‘O People of Paradise, it is eternal and there is no death. First of all who the hell r we humans to question at what ALLAH does! His wisdom is beyond our comprehension our minds can understood. He is the most just when He promised eternal Hell for disbelievers. They ownselves should be blamed for ending up in that horrible place. ALLĀH sent warners warning abt this place but they didn't listen to them. They mock at them & their Creator. So they deserve that. May ALLAH save us all from Hell Fire & grant us Jannah by His mercy. Al-Anbiya 21:23 لَا يُسْـَٔلُ عَمَّا يَفْعَلُ وَهُمْ يُسْـَٔلُونَ He cannot be questioned as to what He does, while they will be questioned.

This is becoming a common trait nowadays. Taking shadh (isolated and weak) opinions for convenience. Ibn Qayyim and Ibn Taymiyyah deviated on this issue and were lambasted for it. Even salafis reject these views of theirs

Bananaman eternal hell is a extremely problematic concept to rationalise. In fact it's impossible to rationalise it in relation to God being the most merciful. Eternal torture isn't a small thing. When you deeply contemplate how could a normal person who tries their best to be a good person be tortured for an eternity for not believing in a religion?

Bananaman Fear Allah and don't spread lies out of ignorance. If you want to comment on someone then do proper research before you accuse them of something. Neither Ibn Taymiyyah nor Ibn Al Qayyim ever made such a claim. I challenge you and everyone else who agrees with you to prove it from their works. This was merely an attempt of the deviants to accuse these great personalities of misguidence and thereby declare them heretics. Ibn Taymiyyah (Rahimahullah) even wrote a book on the eternality of Heaven and Hell. He refuted those who claimed it will cease to exist. Ibn al Qayyim was only stating the arguments of these people. He never endorsed thier opinion. He was only trying to show what basis they have to make that argument.

saad shah Indeed Allah is not unjust in the least. If Islam didn't reached them in its true form in worldly life then they will be given another chance on the day judgement.

umar ahmed this is a great saying of yours and I say that morals inspired in human thoughts that justice is always fairly hidden behind the completion of a devils actions otherwise justice won’t exist which is senseless . You mentioned that khalideena fee has means forever in hell, and it is also mentioned about disobedient Muslims that they will be in hell for "khalideena feeha". You must know that khalideena has two meanings, one is "forever", and the other is "for a long period of time". When Allah SWT mentions about disobedient Muslims and uses the term khalideena feeha, then in that instance it means for a long period of time. And when khalideena feels is used in reference to disbelievers, then it means eternity and not "for a long period of time". Why? Because other verses of the Quran prove this and clarify that what does khalideena feeha mean when referring to disbelievers, where Allah swt mentions khalideena feeha "abada". That they will remain forever (khalideena feeha) abada (and ever). So for non muslims, the word abada confirms that khalideena is being used for the meaning forever because abada also means forever, and for disobedient muslims only khalideena is mentioned and not abada, confirming that here khalideena is being used for the meaning of "a long period" and not "forever". So some verses of the Quran clarify other verses of the Quran which is a known law in Tafseer

Hellfire is not eternal, the word "khalidina" and "abad" it also means for a long time. read also V.128 An-naam in arabic: ila macha allahu which means "except what God wants" (speaking of the length of stay in hell) also in v.107 and 108 (Hud) he says the same thing v23 (an-naba) the prophet mohamed talked about the last men in the hellfire who after he go in paradise. The verse 40 (Al-araf) and also When it says that Allah has forbidden paradise to the associates speaks of the day of judgment where Allah will never let the infidels enter paradise, but after having suffered centuries in hell they will come out. the verse where Allah says that they will not come out of the fire he says "kharijina" not "yukhraju" which is not the same thing. "yukhraju" means that they will never go out and this is said only for those in heaven. God wrote in a book that mercy precedes my anger and in a verse of the Koran he says that his mercy embraces everything

I think you have not read all verses of Quran regarding the heaven and hell. Go and read Ibn Taymiyyah research on eternity of hell and you will find interesting observations. By no means he says for certain that hell had an ending, he just shares the verses and the sayings of Sahabah on that which could imply Hell will come to an end- but the time is only upto Allah to decide for which could be Ages as one verse puts it. Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen was asked: Is Hell eternal or will it come to an end? He replied: What is definite is that it is eternal, and no other view is known among the salaf. Hence the scholars made this one of their tenets of faith, so that we believe that Hell is eternal and will last forever. This is a matter concerning which there is no doubt, because Allaah has mentioned the eternal nature of Hell in three places in the Qur’aan: 1 - In Soorat al-Nisa, where He says (interpretation of the meaning): “Verily, those who disbelieve and did wrong [by concealing the truth about Prophet Muhammad and his message of true Islamic Monotheism written in the Tawraatt (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel) with them]; Allaah will not forgive them, nor will He guide them to any way. Except the way of Hell, to dwell therein forever” [al-Nisa’ 4:168-169]

Your concept is wrong. Hell is eternal how even paradise is everlasting, and this is not disproportionate because like paradise is forever even if someone does good action for a short term of life, in reference to the eternal life. This concept doesnt make sense.
