I purchased the RF 100-500 to replace a Tamron 100-400 Vi DC and Sigma 150-600 C, used mostly for birding. These were both EF mounts and suffered from "AF pulsing" on my new R7, which is well described. While I understand why some users might be put off by the cost of the RF100-500, I was able to sell my EF lenses and take advantage of a 20% off sale here in Canada in the lead-up to Black Friday, 2022. As a result, the "net" was not nearly so harsh as I feared, and I have no regrets. The R7 and RF100-500 make an awesome combination for birds, wildlife, and sports: the dual USM motors make the AF accurate and responsive; the OIS works well with the R7 IBIS; and the image quality is spectacular, as you would expect for L glass. As you note, the F6.3 out to 430 mm isn't all that bad, and low-light/high ISO performance is less an issue with modern sensors and de-noising software. If you can manage the price (which may require a bit of patience to take advantage of promotional sales), it's well worth the upgrade, in my opinion.

f7.1 isnt a problem per se, it just that any lens is at its sharpest at 2 stops above rating.

7.1 IS a problem when shooting moving subjects in low light. For wildlife it's definitely a bane

I find my 100-500 at 7.1 abit soft if the lighting isnt mid day.. iso above 800 becomes really noisy

Yes it can be limited at f7.1

F/7.1 can and sometimes isn't a problem but it depends on the conditions. Now I think if you go over f/8, from a speed standpoint (AF speed) there can be some impacts to AF speed on some cameras. Some don't have an issue, but others might. So IT DEPENDS. In low-light though f/7.1 may also be a problem requiring you to run higher ISO and I think this is one area where people forget. When you get to higher ISOs, each increment of ISO will have a bigger effect on your image (going from ISO 100 to 200 or even 100 to 400 on most cameras is nothing, but going from say ISO 1600 to 3200 or 6400 may be a big deal). So in good light, slower lenses may be fine but in low-light, they may not.

I kept my Olympus 40-150 2.8 pro with TC1.4, 56-210mm F4 =120-420mm f8 on FF, after comparing it to the less expensive Sigma 100-400 f5-6.3 on my FF Lumix S5. If I am buying a full frame lens that dark for that stupid amount of money, I'd rather shoot on MFT and have less weight, size and price. 7.1 is a no no!

On a recent safari a nice UK chap brandished the 100-500 on a pride of lions on a kill in fading light. Leo has a penchant for hunting at ungodly hours, Kudus just fall over themselves as the light dwindles While I was happily snapping away with my 70-200 2.8, our UK Chappy was cursing the Gods that made this lens His wife coveted my short but stubby lens too😅
