In today’s video, we are exploring one of the most common fashion arguments people tend to have - Is Fashion Art? Does it count as an art form? Can fashion be considered artistic? Even though I’m going to give my perspective, this is a topic that can be very subjective depending on how you look at it so let me know in the comments what your thoughts are.

Personally, I believe anything that requires creative thought and action (deviating from the norm) for its development is an art. So I do believe that fashion can be art.

Yes. Everything is a semiotic, we give meaning to "things". We create the boundaries of what is considered art, for art, is nothing more than a linguistic convention. And as a society, we have decided that fashion is art. Simply, art is fashion because we say it is so.

Fashion can still be art even if it serves other purposes. The same goes for architecture. We need shelter for survival, and we need clothing for survival. That does not mean that these practices are necessarily devoid of artistic creativity. If you're also an admirer of modernism and the concept of 'form follows function', then there is something really beautiful in the idea of the artwork being an extension of its purpose.

I mean, the whole idea of applied arts (which fashion is a part of) didn't really gain traction till probably the early 1900s and I hate to say this (my lefty leaning soul is on fire) but a lot of it is due to capitalism. Dressing used to denote rank or class but once it became less rigid, items were commodified and in order to stand out in the market, either you go the cheap route or you try to sell something special - which is where the art and skill comes in. But capitalism also brought us fast fashion so... yeah.

The question of "is something art" is not even worth pondering, the real question is what is art. We can not determine creativity or innovation, all we can do is appreciate our own interpretation of artistic value from our own instinctive point of view. Nobody can even tell you what good art is, let alone tell you if something is actually art or not.

Someone in my class had a big argument with my lect regarding about this, he (the classmate) insisted that all fashion is art but my lecturer in return said although she agreed with him that fashion CAN be art, however fashion as a whole, isnt art, it's a trend, to follow the latest and popular style until the next one comes in.

@@sherrysicle I do think the lecturer is fair in saying that not all fashion is art, but instead, CAN be. In the same way, not all art is purely for leisurely viewing; it can overlap with the principles of design and at that point it is less of a conversation between artist and viewer and more of a direct message. Either way however, successful communication is the desired outcome. Therefore, movements and trends in both fashion and art are rather essential to being considered 'artistic' in the first place, as without them, there would be no recognisable grounds for communication.

One day somewhere I have created this quote in ar museum and I told it to my friend: "art doesn't need to be explained, because it explains everything. We just need to feel it". Exact same thing is with fashion. We dont understand most of the creation in it, but if we truly love fashion, we can feel the meaning of it.

I peeked at another comment here and I think the correct response to this question is: Fashion *can* be art. I believe fashion can go one of two ways. Just like the scale you showed in this video, either fashion can skew more towards art, more towards function or even fall somewhere in between.

I think a similar situation can be seen in architecture. At the base of architecture, just as with fashion, the building or clothing needs to be functional. That is the root of architecture and fashion, to protect people from weather basically. Yet we've gone past that to the point where many instances of architecture and fashion are so beautiful, expressive and/or captivating that they can definitely be seen to be a artistic statement rather than a thing of function. Great video👍

Yes and no. Depends on the context. The way I see it is that fashion, art and design have one specific trait in common, which is communication. That's why I say it depends on context, on what you're trying to communicate. I believe this topic is very deep and I just shared a fraction of how I see it. Looking forward to hearing your opinion and reading aaall the comments. 😁 Feel free to agree/disagree with me and share your thoughts even further.

When Ayo uploads the day instantly get better. Edit: I'm too mainly use Bourdieu's art definition. When we address that art is subjective, we actually align its meaning to more sociological rather than personal. Even if we value art personally, it moves the culture by impacting the more broad audience rather than mere individuals.

Great discussion as always Ayo! Fashion is first and foremost functional for me as at the end of the day we all need to be clothed. But I definitely think it can be appreciated as an art form especially for haute couture designers such as Schiaparelli and Viktor & Rolf. My only concern is the over saturation of having to produce collections season after season in which no one actually wears! I wonder what happens to the pieces that don’t get sold? Would love to hear your thoughts on this in a future video!

It really depends on the designer and the consumer. A designer can inject their history and interests in pieces. Thats true expression, and therefore artistic. Same with the consumer, if they appreciate the meaning behind the piece, as opposed to trendindess and hype. Then its also experienced as art.

Thanks for opening this tricky but interesting subject up. As fashion and art tend not to be univocal, it's even more speculative trying to model one on top of the other. I like and agree with your point about the wearer of fashion (or, the wearer of clothing that makes people stop, look and formulate an emotion that may lead to a change in their life) being a performance artist. For someone who grew up in the self-styling / street-styling of punk then this has some clout. Have a look at Barbara Vinken's Fashion Zeitgeist from 2005. A bit old now, but she tries to get beyond the sociological analysis of fashion which has its uses but also has limitations (Bourdieu etc).

it's such a complex discussion. western tradicional art forms have always been subjects of exclusion and representations of power and status through colonialism most of the world has followed that, so i guess it can be interpreted as art, it has an huge capitalist industry behind it as it also has marginalized group using it to express tradition and culture kinda like painting in galleries and grafitti or ballet and frevo

This was so interesting!! I’m a product designer and we also think of ourselves as designers and not as artists and we are very keen on making this distinction. This is because we say that we are creating functional pieces that solve a problem. Of course there’s a gradient to more artsy products one can design (without a practical functionality, but like a piece that stands for itself.I guess that can be transferred to fashion design with a great gradient.

My views before watching the video (may edit or add on after I listen😅): Not all fashion is art. Historically speaking it was more for functional purpose and later a way to show one's status within the society. When you say art and fashion I'll think of Rei like body meets dress, even though she doesn't consider herself as an artist. Now it's been pushed as fashion is art as a way of expressing yourself and individuality, but what I feel is that most fall into the trend cycle and be a part of the bandwagon, so not really individualistic. (Will add on my views after listening to the video)

Not entirely, or traditionally, but sure, fashion can be art. Also I found out on your old, old QnA that we're from the same borough. I thought that was cool and I entirely agree with how detached we all are from fashion here (I still live there). I feel it's going to be hard to get into fashion when I feel odd making an effort to try and look good, all while walking down the high street.

One of the most important components in art is the sense of viewership. While 'fashion' in the context of clothing might struggle to be considered art, the entire process of fashion certainly has artistic elements. The runway is probably the best example of this, and designers like Samuel Ross are capitalising on the runway's capacity for art/performance art. It my be irresponsible to consider fashion as an art form holistically, but there are most definitely elements of the fashion world that mirror aspects of art and its general concepts.

Tough to answer because it's basically the same when you are considering wheter something is design or art. it's quite subjective but you can basically state that when something becomes progessively more utilitarian, it's more so considered design. If its more about the statement and thought behind the piece rather than the usability, i'd say it's art. So depending on the context, some fashion is art, some is design, in the end it's all subjective, not so much objective.

Fashion is, in my view, defiantly an art form from the perspective of the design and construction elements conceived of by creative minds. It can also be artistic in the way one "styles" outfits, to a greater or lesser degree, depending on the level of thought and individual creativity that went into putting it together. I believe that men's fashion has become more artistically expressive over the last two decades, thanks in large part by a merging of art forms: starting back in the 70s with V Westwood's influence in music, moving to fashion in the music video, and the subsequent world-wide influence of African-American culture through Hip-Hop.

I think that fashion is an art form. I think most people don't consider it an art because one, most people interested in fashion are women so it is seen as "frivolous", and two because they have a very narrow view of what art is. To me it's like how we won't call a person an artist JUST because they can draw a stick figure, it's the same thing with fashion. H&M is very much not art, but a carefully crafted haute couture dress is.

I see fashion as more design than art. Yes, it does have artistic elements as in creativity, taking inspiration and self- expression, but it really is a design form because of the need for innovation and function. Clothing needs to be sold and worn. That should always be the end goal. Fashion has a huge issue with sustainability right now. We don't have enough fabric to create "art" right now. The kind of art I'm talking about that I believe aspiring designers should avoid is the victor and rolfe kind of art, where their clothes eventually end up in museums/galleries because they weren't intended to be sold and worn. The alexander mqueen and elsa schapperili kind of art, on the other hand, are acceptable because they are still sellable and wearable. Although very artistic, their clothes are still well designed becuase they tick the boxes of innovation and function. It's all about striking a balance. Art: to make the clothing look interesting and distinctive, design: to innovate new clothes that are wearable , sellable and sustainable.

Fast fashion is definitely not a form of art however, high fashion and even more so the creative process of designing and constructing a garment, could be considered an art form? Fashion in general can define different historical eras, in the same way ordinary art forms can, they are all fluid and interconnected?

Art never had a fine line definition, I personally study product design, one of my professors mentioned that "the biggest difference between design and art is the quantity", Designs are often mass-produced, or produced at a larger quantity to be sold. I don't entirely agree with that idea, but I think it's a somewhat accurate categorization method, for general art and design distinguishment. I personally think art is anything that provides value outside of its physical functional value. In this case, many fashion items successfully provide this value through their expression. All in all, I agree with your perspective, it's a spectrum and I don't think we can ever have a fine line to define art and design

Yes and no. Fashion is an applied art, but ultimately it is about beauty. Only recently have we seen an increase of designs that have a technological influence or deconstructed look because men’s fashion and unisex fashion has become a demand. But ultimately the goal in fashion is to create something new, interesting, and beautiful for consumers to want to wear. And beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so if you find darkness to be beautiful, there are designers like Alexander McQueen that design darkness in a beautiful way… which can be fine art. Especially when you have a look at the details, construction, and appliqué work done on couture garments. Fashion is also about trends so it ultimately has to find a new source of beauty or be able to sell another version of beauty season after season, so it works in faster cyclical trends than art which is much slower. But fashion reflects the times, it’s a mirror of what is happening or going on in the world and art does the same thing. Most people say “fashion is a form of self-expression.” But it is not. Style is. Style is individual, it’s the thought taken in the way you put clothes together. You can say that artists do this in the way they choose to paint a picture, the type of paint, the colors they choose. I think Fashion has a marketing and selling element that art doesn’t HAVE to have. Art can be subjective, personal, and about an artists’ feelings where as fashion designers don’t put their feelings in their clothes, again, one of the things that made Lee McQueen so special. The objective most designers take is finding inspiration, create a connection to it, develop a design perspective and a story, and create a collection based on it. While also keeping market and trend in mind… so it’s a bit less personal than Art.

personally i think fashion is an art whichever way you look at it, even if we talk about wearability. for example when you wear new shoes or a shirt its usually very stiff at first but with time the cloth will hold to your foot or your body, it will learn the way you move, to support function, and hence i think that that itself carries meaning, and so to me even wearability is an art form cause every shirt or shoe tells us a story about the previous owner with its crises stretches stains etc. i do however choose to interpret it this way, as i personally like viewing fashion with a lot more meaning and depth. also in the definition of the word art it includes creativity so it doesn't have to be restricted to the piece of clothing itself but also the way a person styles it, different people will choose to style something in different ways using their own creative thinking. fashion comes down to how you choose to interpret it. if you choose to call it art, it is art if not it isn't, and this thought varies from individual to individual. for example math, many ,mathematicians call math a form of art while many other people like to argue that it isn't, all because one person understood it one way while the other did another, one with more meaning and depth while the other as just a process to get over with.

I think the process of fashion could be considered art ( draping, cutting, sketching) then the end result becomes a product. However, the argument that fashion can not be art because it is worn simply does not add up to me. I mean art on walls is consumed in exhibitions, museums and placed in homes decoratively and is also stamped on souvenirs ( Mona Lisa for example). Music is constantly consumed in our ears over and over, theatre, film. All other forms of art are never debated even though we do consume these products in one way or another.

Examine the current state of the world. 2 Timothy 4:1-5 states "You should know this, Timothy, that in the last days there will be very difficult times. People will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred. They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have no self-control. They will be cruel and hate what is good. They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God. They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly. Stay away from people like that!" Jesus is coming back. Are you ready?
