Financing your first car or any car for that matter is a controversial subject among many petrolheads and car enthusiasts. These days to the general public financing a car is pretty much the main way to buy a car, but to those in the enthusiast crowd it can seem overly expensive and pointless.

Saving money for a car kind of sucks. I just want something to drive but I'm so hesitant now because everyone either says it's the worst idea ever and others say that it's not. It's very disappointing especially when people brag about paying their car off in full.

Financing a car is fine, but the one thing i can't stand about it is the way people act about it. To give it some context... take me for an example, I currently drive around in a 2009 Twingo GT. It's not the quickest, or the newest, or whatever...but it's mine - I own it, and it's my first car. Im proud of it, and i leave it at that. and what i simply cannot stand is when you get that *one dickhead* who drives around in his brand new Audi A1 acting like a baller, telling me how much more successful he is than me because he has a newer car, when in reality he doesn't own it, never will, he's broke as a joke because of the finance package he's on (on top of every other thing he's got on finance too)... Finance is cool if you're a decent person...but the amount of people i see who drive around like they fucking own the place... sitting in cars they have no place being in.. just pisses me off 😂 Sorry just had to get that off my chest 😅

Same here. I drive a 2009 Ford Crown Victoria p71 and it does 0 to 60 mph in 7.9 seconds and tops out at 130mph, definitely not the quickest. Its top speed is limited to 130mph because of the rear axle ratio. Besides its a fleet sedan. I'm paying 500$ per year full coverage. It uses a 4.6L V8 250bhp and 4 speed automatic with RWD. Its fun to drive.

I'm saving up for a 2013 Shelby GT500 tho which is 55k. It comes out of the factory with a 5.8L supercharged V8 662bhp 631 foot torque 6 speed manual. It does 0 to 60 in 3.4 seconds and top speed is 202mph.

I finance my current car, which is my first car. It's a 2013 plate Seat Ibiza. It's on a HP payment plan, and costs me £130 a month. As always you've made some great points here, but what I see people doing is getting a new car when they're at the dealer they get talked into something better, than they end up spending all their money on insurance and the car and at the end the car loses most of its value and they end up selling it for nothing. Then the people who learned get a second-hand low mileage car and the ones who haven't end up repeating what they've done the first time. IMO it's better to get a cheap second-hand hatchback like a Seat Ibiza, VW Golf or Polo, Audi A3 , Honda Civic or Jazz, not much fun but finacially sensible.

I personally think PCP offers the most flexibility as it offers you a chance to part exchange for another car allowing you upgrade, if you're into, that semi-regularly like a phone contract. My personal take is that new drivers shouldn't buy a NEW car on finance and stay away from like-new but I think financing a used but not ancient car is reasonable to spread the cost about and allow you to get something that isn't literally a pile of rusty wank. Most 'petrol head' arguments are easily countered the only argument that truely sticks is what you said at the start, don't go looking to finance something that is ideally above like 20% of your wage per month assuming you have no other major finances to pay for like rent etc. I stick to about 15% of my wage which is more than enough to get a decent used, low mileage car on PCP that's only a few years old. Obviously check the history of the car but I find it safer than buying an ancient used car from some bloke on gumtree, auto-trader or ebay especially when you don't have the time, equipment or knowledge to ensure its going to run well after you buy it.

Let's face it, financing is inevitable, nobody is paying 4-5K+ out of their pocket and if you do then, it's pretty stupid. Your car is the 2nd most expensive thing you'll buy apart from your mortgage (if you don't have a banger all your life) and it helps a whole lot with your credit rating done right. You either start with a shit car/death trap for £600 and have it until you're sick of it or it dies and then start financing or start financing from the beginning. If you rent/lease or are in a contract where you don't own the car, you might as well be burning your money. You're getting absolutely taken advantage of. The best thing you can do is take out a loan to buy the car outright then pay the loan as you would with car payments. No strings attached, lowest interest rate, pay back whenever you want, however often you want (as long as it's once a month) and pay as much as you want (as long as you're paying the minimum payment) and you want make sure you can clear the minimum payment by a lot if you can but say a months tight you know you aren't in trouble. Also, worst comes to worst you loose your job, or something. You own the car and you can sell the car and if you got something half decent it'll hold its value meaning you can clear the loan and have your money back minus the interest and value drop. Doing it this way means the car is like a bank on wheels and the money you work hard for is in the car, once you sell it you will get all of the money it's worth minus interest and value drop of the car (which shouldn't be a massive amount). You can put that money towards your next car and pay less interest on your upgrade because you've proven yourself with a credit rating as well. Once you come to the end of any other form of buying a car, you have absolutely nothing, to show for it and you are back at square one.

WassellThatAbout financing is inevitable? Wouldn't say so. I'll personally never finance a car since you're always paying more long term. The best option is always just to save first, and then buy. Especially at 17 with no credit. I saved up from about 14/15 and bought a 2014 Polo for £7k. Now I don't have to worry about job stability or anything either.
@Ghostzy01
@Ghostzy01 7 жыл бұрын
Neil Rowe Yeah saving first, so you have hardly any money for 12 months of don't save that much and it takes you over a year to get an average car. Buying cars outright isn't the best way to do it, and is not practical if you're buying anything worth mentioning. You best get saving for the BMW or Merc you want when you upgrade, you might be 40-50 by the time you get it though.

Alexis Santoyo There are a few ways to bump your credit rating which will eventually allow you to get a finance on a car. 1) take a phone contract out in your name. Make sure you can pay the monthly bill. 2) if you have a car, try paying your insurance monthly rather than all in one. 3) *Very risky for a young person..usually*. Try get a credit card from your bank. Speaking from experience that has helped me out a lot. I'm 20, work part time 12 hours a week (pick up the occasional overtime to pay my way) have a phone contract in my name, insurance on my car is being paid for monthly and also own a credit card. Credit cards are very good in helping build ur credit score however you must ensure you can pay off the minimum amount every month. I've had it now for a year. Only used it to pay for fuel. Every time I topped up the car, I'd pay using my credit card (knowing that I've got enough money in my debit account to pay off the amount on the credit card) then a couple days later, paid off the remaining amount on the credit card. Helped me boost my score. Have also got my dads car on finance under my name. Helped me out a lot. Hope this helped you and others out too.

personally i dont mind finance aslong as your in a stable job and can easily afford the monthy payments like as you said dont go get a £400 payment if your only earning £1,000. although tbh i would avoid financing your first car mainly due to the fact that lets be honest alot of new drivers may end up messing up their car abit whether its getting a few scrapes on it or a dent or burning out the clutch etc. atleast then you dont need to worry if you own it outright. once your more confident with driving then yh sure finance a car.

Car prices (even of complete shit boxes) are now inflated because of how ubiquitous finance is. If you are a saver though there is good news! All you need to do is wait for the next downturn in the cycle. I remember all the cool cars you could get in 2009-2011 for absolute pittance when people who had taken on finance became desperate. When you see a 19 year old driving a A45 amg just remember he’s taking on all the depreciation for people like us down the line who can then enjoy relatively free motoring. M140is are predicted to be worth under 10K in two years time! Financing a car is never a sensible thing to do but just remember it does benefit you as a cash buyer by creating a large supply of cheap cars later down the line.

I recently got my first proper car.. a Vauxhall Astra on hire purchase.. HP for short.. and I agree when your saying about setting a monthly budget that suits. I make roughly 1700 per month with both of my jobs. Yet my car is only £88.80 per month. Insurance included it's well under £150 per month. Now granted.. the car was only £3600 to buy. Over the 4 years I have it.. it'll cost me roughly 5k. But I only pay the stated monthly cost until the car is fully paid up and i then own the car. I know I can afford the payments no problem. And that's even if I was to loose or quit one of my jobs. Good videos btw.. keep up the good work 🤙

Nice!!! My first car was a 1996 Chevy Impala SS which had a 5.7L V8 LT1 corvette engine with 260bhp 4 speed automatic and did 157mph stock. I was paying 500$ yearly in insurance. Now, I drive a 2009 Ford Crown Victoria P71 which uses a 4.6L V8 250bhp 4 speed automatic transmission. I'm paying 500$ per year full coverage and I brought it for 950$ at a auction. I'm saving up for a 2013 Shelby GT500 which uses a 5.8L supercharged with 662bhp 631lb-ft 6 speed manual and does 0 to 60 in 3.5 seconds with top speed 202mph. It comes with all of this out a factory too.

I seen the PCP from purgeot. It's a 3 year thing. Just add fuel. I am looking to buy my first car as doing lessons, doing this option includes everything. except you can only do agreed mileage, have a black box but no curfew. the purgeot 208 any good? works out around £150? a month. for 6k miles a year, includes everything to insurance, tax, mot etc..
@emmadavies7787
@emmadavies7787 7 жыл бұрын
I've also considered the same thing, but the monthly payment does depend on your age and other factors. The one I was considering was the 108 and it was advertised as costing about £105 - £130 ish a month, but the example they use to advertise is usually the price it would be for about a 40 year old. Because insurance is included in the price, and insurance shoots up for young people who have just passed their test. It turns out costing about £250 - £290, that's what I found out when I looked into it.
@reeceh6038
@reeceh6038 7 жыл бұрын
Emma Davies it's not too bad when it includes everything though is it? as it's not like as he was describing in the video for just a car. that price is included everything. tax. insurance. breakdown cover. so essentially it would be slightly more for that factor

@emmadavies7787 7 жыл бұрын
Reece H no you're right it is a really good deal when it includes everything, I just wanted to make you aware that it's not always as cheap as it appears. For me, at the time when I was considering this, the extra price was too expensive. But like you said for it to include everything it is still a really good option :)
@reeceh6038
@reeceh6038 7 жыл бұрын
Emma Davies will defiantly be careful though. thanks for that as they might sneak it on contract. strange there is so many options available yet so little resources to help you pick something right. it's either that option of buy a car separate and get everything manual trying to work out if it's worth or not.

Fuck financing, especially for your first car, you can get an awesome car outright second hand and you actually have an asset. Once youve got an established place in a secure role then it's less risky but even still you just soak up the value loss car after car when you could buy a car that's just ended it's finance period or ex-fleet. Save and have the posh cars.

I financed a 2.5 Litre Focus RS for £25,000 when I was 21. I put down £10,000 deposit and I've had the car for three years. Financing is not a problem if you are good with money and don't leave yourself short. I plan to eventually pay off the car and probably put it into storage - as the value on this specific model will most likely sky-rocket. I am aiming to get a Merc, something which has the power but also the luxury side of things for my general daily. Especially as the newer 17 plate models are even more efficient on fuel, even the likes of the C63 AMG.

Something you don't mind dinging up a bit, because let's be honest a lot of young drivers will. Old Micras, Fiestas, Clios are all fun hatchback that are cheap to buy and run, won't break the bank with insurance costs, and can also be in pretty nice condition
