RECETTES
// PAIN PERDU

Ingrédients:
3 œufs
1/2 tasse de lait végétal
1/2 cuillère à café de cannelle
4 tranches de pain Challah
Sirop d'érable
Beurre
Préparation:
1. Battre les oeufs avec le lait et la cannelle dans un récipient à l'aide d'un fouet
2. Tremper le pain tranche par tranche dans la mixture en le retournant plusieurs fois
3. Pendant ce temps là, faire fondre le beurre dans une large poêle
4. Faire cuire deux tranches de challah dans la poêle jusqu'à ce qu'elles soient dorées pendant environ 2 minutes
5. Retourner et cuire le deuxième côté
6. Servir chaud avec du sirop d'érable

En allemand, on appelle le "pain perdu" "Armer Ritter" le "pauvre chevalier", parce que il est préparé des ingrédients les plus basiques, que même un pauvre chevalier aurait pu s'offrir. Et un petit astuce pour la prochaine fois qu'une coquille d'œuf tombe dans le récipient, utilisez une coquille d'œuf pour l'enlever.

In Portuguese we call it Rabanada. However, even thought it is a dish made with stale/older breads, it is considered a special dish usually eaten on Christmas. It is something one would eat once a year max.

I'm Quebec we call it "pain doré" (golden bread or "browned" bread), which is a bit more glorious than "pain perdu" (spoiled bread), haha

Au Brésil le "pain perdu" on appelle "rabanada" (il y a pas de traduction) et c'est une recette très commun au Noël dans certains régions. Cependant, moi personnellement j'ai jamais mangé ça 🤣

Ma grand-mère (elle vient de la région de Flensburg, la ville la plus au nord de l'Allemagne) appelait ce plat "le chevalier du pauvre" pour le rendre plus intéressant pour les enfants, car c'était un "repas de pauvres". Il était préparé exactement comme chez toi, à la différence qu'on utilisait des petits pains à la place du pain. On ne voulait pas jeter les vieux petits pains.

Thanks for making this video on my favorite breakfast dish! I remembered trying to order French toast for room service in a 5 star hotel in Paris. Initially the server didn’t get what French toast was. After repeating French toast to him the second time over the phone, he’d simply said “very well, Madame”. Lo and behold - I got a basket of sliced bread when the room service arrived at my room. So funny! My favorite memory of Paris

Ma théorie préférée, c'est que quand vous avez perdu votre pain nous l'avons trouvé, et comme il s'agissait de votre pain nous l'avons appelé le "French toast." On aurait pu aussi l'avoir appelé le "found toast."

In American English (don't know if it is also in other forms of English), we have French green beans. Could be French-cut green beans or French-style green beans or even frenched green beans. These are green beans sliced very thin lengthwise. The kitchen gadget that does this slicing is called a frencher. This term makes sense as coming from the Old Irish usage that you mentioned. But there are also French green beans that are not sliced but thinner and more delicate than regular green beans. These sometimes are given the French name haricot vert (English doesn't usually bother with getting the grammatical form exactly as French would have it). I have only seen these rather recently, in fairly expensive food stores. I don't know whether I just never noticed them before or perhaps if I was never in the right sort of store before. Or perhaps they really have appeared only recently. Clearly this sort of French green beans has at least some French pretensions.
