Kauto Star clearly the best of that lot. Twice a winner and a runner up and smashed every horse from 2m to 3m2f. Best Mate was so lucky as he was racing against handicappers. Look at the fields and RPR's of Kautos opposition compared to Best Mates. And, he wasn't campaigned just for this race!

Kauto Star is the best chaser of any mentioned, would be very difficult for anyone to argue otherwise. Just focussing on the gold cup, I'd still say peak Kauto would beat the others on any ground if he really was at his best. But Denman was incredible in 08, I find it staggering that anyone would consider Best Mate in the same parish to be honest. Forum line through Beef Or Salmon? Maybe that's unfair. I reckon there's very little between Al Boum Photo and Best Mate. Galopin is above Best Mate and Al Boum now for me. They are all incredible racehorses though, love them all but there's only one Kauto Star
