Gamazda is a wonderful pianist and like most that have commented, I subscribe and watch her videos. They have wonderful production, and every video is different and an experience. But as you say, 10:35, her videos are "performances" just like music videos. You don't have any artists being recorded singing in a forest but are performing/miming to a pre-recorded track. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that - Gamazda would have recorded it before either on a piano or on midi track. The most obvious one is "Evanescence - Bring Me To Life (Piano cover by Gamazda)" - check it out, if you cannot see the fingering being off time with the sounds like at 1:20 or the end of the video, then the lack of a sustain (or any!) pedals makes it really obvious for everyone. It's like a magician can spot the tricks of other magicians, and any pianist would spot where something is "off". But like I said, that's not a criticism - her videos are music videos, but instead of someone singing, it's the piano. Her arrangements and performances are amazing.

Good observation, with regards to Rachmaninoff, Scriabin and a few others who graduated from the Moscow Conservatory. However, one could go with Julliard that produced Van Cliburn and Chick Corea, or Curtis, with Lang Lang, Yuja Wang, Serkin, and quite a few others. Gamazda, per your words of being one of the best pianists in the world, with this genre of rock/pop/metal. I agree. Now, regarding performing the major works of classical music, I don't know that Gamazda could handle some of the more difficult pieces, whether concerti by Prokofiev, Bartok, or Rachmaninoff, and perform that to a level of the elite pianists. Yeah, I would believe she would have the technique to give a very good performance of Beethoven's concerti, Grieg, and Brahms maybe. Not so sure of some of the more demanding works by Chopin or Liszt, but I give her great credit for perhaps being the very best at what she does.

I don't now if you misstated things, trying to say that there are people who don't go to school who wind up being brilliant in their fields. However, your actual writing that "there are plenty of people in all walks of life who have attained high levels of education in a subject, and yet consistently fail to grasp even the basics" is a wholly false statement. This is wrong. Take this case of Gamazda. According to you she wouldn't be able to play a scale, or an easy piece such as the first movement of the Moonlight Sonata, let alone the concert repertoire from classical music, and her own arrangements of pop music from the 1960's to present day. You are wrong, regarding myself, as take my MA in international economics from one of the top programs in the country, at Michigan State, which followed my undergraduate degree from Duke. I have utilized differential equations to provide estimates of the effects of tax policy upon GDP, and taught economics at one of the top private schools in the US, at university, and served as an economist and financial analyst for Federal and State government, and large private sector firms. According to you, I wouldn't be competent for the basics of economics, of doing a basic calculation of GDP, and wouldn't understand that when demand is decreased prices with everything else held constant would decrease. Or take my father, who has a PhD in marketing and wrote 22 books on the subject, many used in universities, and was President of the American Marketing Association......are you saying he doesn't understand the basics of marketing, when his friends and clients included Sam Walton (who founded Walmart), and he was flown all over the world to give speeches to top executives?" So either you meant something else or you are wrong, as you can't tell me that a PhD in math doesn't understand the basics of Algebra 1. There is one however. When I think of Nobel Laureate Economists, they make some stupid statements, but it isn't out of a lack of understanding of basic economics, they are often paid off via funding and have knowingly wrongful ideologies. Such as Nobel Laureate and NYT writer Paul Krugman. He said in 2016 if Trump was elected the stock market would crash and never recover. Krugman knew the basics that when you cut taxes and deregulate the stock market goes up. In fact from when Trump was elected to the day he left office, even with a Pandemic the stock market increased by about 70%. Krugman was just lying, period. So some who have great knowledge will lie, whether from bribery or other causes, but they are incredibly well versed in the basics of the subject they have an advanced degree and often have taught.

She's definately gifted and highly skilled. And although I like many of her covers, I prefer vkgoeswild's covers. Gamazda usually has better videos and focusses more on the show-element of playing these pieces. Vika aka vkgoeswild focusses more on the music and creates transcriptions of rock/metal songs with an exceptional accuracy. She usually weaves multiple melodies together with the right hand ( or 2 hands combining into a third melody ). Check her rendition of Lulaby by The Cure, or Don't stop believing by Journey.

@ 1:20 She is doing sync video to a recording. What is on the screen is not what is being played. Look at the bass notes.
@Viktor19515Ай бұрын
Of course, she synchronizes the video with pre-recorded audio. High-quality sound can only be achieved by processing a recording made in a very high-level studio or on a digital piano. In this case, the video will be an image of a studio or a digital keyboard with flashing lights. A matter of taste But 1:20 ...if it's the left hand, then you probably need a better audio system 🙂

hi matthew, in the slim chance that you see this comment i'd like you to react to a piece called "Suiren" by Sakuzyo. it's undoubtedly the hardest (doubtedly humanly possible) piano piece i've ever seen and i'd like to hear your thoughts on it! it's a pretty old and in my opinion EXTREMELY underrated piece and if you, let's say, "shined some light" into it and allowed more people to discover it that would be really cool! i have yet to see someone play this piece accurately
@florin-titusniculescu5871Ай бұрын
behind 5 minutes of video , there are tens of hours of tries and rehearsals . she also has concerts every now and then . so yeah , she's a beast of a classically trained pianist

yeah god only knows how much time she puts into makeing one little vid. so much time and effort go into it. but honestly,she deserves every last bit of praise for her covers since they are far from average covers like most people do. she puts her own spin on it at times unlike those wannabe-famous youtubers. yes she has the resources also because she was born fairly wealthy,but her love or music,dedication is next level.hence i could listen to it all day long

I've been following her for years now and she's quite amazing. It re-lighted my love for piano music again and maybe one day I'll try to play piano myself. But her video's are just that: video's. In some it is obvious that there's a separate audiotrack but then again it's meant to entertain people (and gain views since it's a source of income). But even if the audio is not always correct on the video it doesn't change much, she can play a piano damn well... But that shouldn't be a surprise since Russia "made" some extraordinary classical musicians. It's one of Russia's export products :)

Her fingering looks like someone who is already with classical music background then later switch. Updating my comment. For one to play bumble bee that smooth, means she plays classical really well. Lolz, I didn't see that one coming. I commented before watching to the end. Me too classical pianist and a producer. I play any kind of music except for Jazz solo improvisation. I only know Jazz chords for that is my limit. I guess I have to subscribe to you both. Nice video.
@Viktor19515Ай бұрын
Gamazda really has an excellent and systematic classical musical education - all levels at the same Russian school of piano playing - music school, college, conservatory, a total of 19 years. The last two are world-class educational institutions with very good teachers. 🙂
@ellookuАй бұрын
@@Viktor19515 Really, I have been thinking of visiting Russia to see if its a good option to move to Russia. May be if that happens, I will have a look at the conservatory. For me I am self taught. Can't really say what I am doing right or wrong on the piano. I think I might need others advice as well.

I think she is absolutely amazing ..her version of 'comfortably numb' absolutely blows me away, it even seems to get better the more often I listen to it.........but occasionally I think she doesn't do a good job of making her compositions 'flow'
@arnoldhau1Ай бұрын
I agree that it would be great to hear her do many "serious" music (classial, modern, does not matter, or jazz), as she is a clearly a very good pianist and above all she has a powerfull and interresting style, reminding me a bit of Cyprien Katsaris. And there is way better and more interessting music out there that pop and rock music, which tends to be a bit bland and repetitive at times. But of course you reach way more people with "popular" music, so it seems that is what she will stick to, and that is fair enough.
@callmeal3017Ай бұрын
Pretty girl. The whole conversation points to the reality that musicality is in the ear of the beholder. She is technically competent and makes clever use of artificial sound layering and good camera production. She is very conventional making it all fairly predictable. All that being said as far as youtube musicians go I myself will opt to spend my tube time listening to the likes of Tory Slusher though she's not a pianist... but in the end to quote Hendrx "what is music m'love?"

She would be a monster playing jazz. There's been others who were classically trained that switched to jazz and ruled (Oscar Peterson). Barbara Dennerlein does it on the Hammond B3 and was one of the first who connected her Hammond with Midi so the bass pedals sound better. For Gamazda, it's great she's using loops to add more sound parts. I think she'll need to start her own band, and if she wants to really be the star, she'll have to be the front person and sing. If she wants more of a challenge, she could explore bass pedals. People like this are from another planet. They're connected to the music mainframe or it's like Neo in the Matrix when he learns Kung Fu and he's a master at it.
