What is starting a business like in Germany? Is there a lot of opportunity to be self-sustainable in Germany? How do Germans feel about immigrants moving into the country and opening businesses and trying to become successful in the country?
We find out from those starting a startup company, is Germany good for entrepreneurs? from the streets of Munich.

You should have asked actual entrepreneurs. The average person on the streets know absolutely nothing about starting a business

This is to the point. Entrepreneurship in Germany is discouraged due to the excessive bureaucracy and high taxes. I wish it was as normalized as opening a business as in the states.

It may vary from city to city but in general the biggest companies in germany are family buisnesses that exist for many decades even centuries like Thyssen Krupp, Siemens, Hugo Boss, VW, BMW, etc. The entrepreneur mindset is not that crazy here in this country. The Mittelschicht is quite big here and most of the people belonging to that weren't brought up to be entrepreneurs.

6:51 I might be wrong, but I think the lady meant every city and every *state* - hinting at the bureaucratic problems with the German federalism, “country”, as it says in the subtitles, however sounds like talking about different nations rather than states in Germany 🤓

Very interesting topic! I liked the companies you talked with to get an overview about the topic from entrepreneurs themselves. Loved seeing my brother on there, the young entrepreneur from the clothing brand - well deserved!!

Any company from Germany feels like trustable. The HQ is fine to be there, but in developing countries you can find more opportunities. In small office with many remote workers or even if you wanna build a factory with 1000 workers. I am planning to doing this job (after graduation). Greetings from Istanbul

The impression I get of the German economy and its surrounding "feeder" countries to the south and east is that it's highly dominated by the Mittelstand family businesses and the big players everyone's heard of - very corporate. At the same time there are a lot of traditional practices - not so many women work, fewer credit cards and mobile phones, still heavy use of cash, and not so much digitalisation of large swathes of the economy like in the UK. I hesitate to say it because slagging off Britain has become a blood sport and we are so incredibly negative about everything at the moment - "the country's doomed, we're rubbish at everything, everyone hates us" etc - but there are some things we do well in entrepreneurial terms. The UK is a great place for tech startups and to launch new versions of retail businesses using digitalisation to drive choice and efficiency. British consumers are apparently some of the readiest in the world to try new products, especially online ones, so global companies use us as a testbed for new ideas. We're good at fintech and banking, mobile app development, computer gaming, food tech, retail innovation, pharmaceutical and other university -based R&D, & specialist manufacturing. We have become rubbish at mass manufacturing and at scaling up big businesses - our entrepreneurs sell up too soon and the government and capital markets do too little to help medium-sized businesses to grow and stay independent. Foreign companies find it too easy to take over our companies, scale up and export their ideas, and then milk the established UK market and take the profits overseas. The big US tech companies and foreign ownership of utility near-monopolies like water are classic examples. Large chunks of the economy remain dominated by big firms with wide moats and nice steady profits that startups find extremely hard to challenge.

The subtitles are quite off - sometimes the translation is very inaccurate but also the English version contains a few grammar mistakes and isn't very coherent.

I started freelancing last year for 8 months and had to pay €495 a month for health insurance. I found that so extortionate! Unfortunately it's what made me leave Germany and return to the UK. I just couldn't afford to live there. Even as a regular employee I was paying €200+ a month for health insurance. 😔 But I will say in general the process for registering my Etsy shop and as a freelancer was very easy and I was surprised I could do my tax online (with ELSTER). 😅

As it's going not to well with the NHS at the moment, you'll probably pay much more for your treatments /if you're able to see a doctor when needed.. as the NHS is turning towards a private health system US style...

@@saba1030 I was paying monthly for insurance PLUS treatment on top of that when I went to the dentist. So for me personally it's much cheaper where I am in Wales.

@@alice-elizabeth OK. Doesn't sound like a good insurance, you had...as normally Dentist costs are included with private health insurances... Elster is available since 2005... Did you move to Germany before Brexit or after? That would have made a difference as well... I hope, you're doing well being in your home country again... Wales is very nice, have been there various times with my London born spouse... All the best to you with greetings 👋 Edit: Elster

@@saba1030 Yeah it was AOK 🙃 I moved to Germany in 2019 so before Brexit and just before the pandemic 🥲 I didn't notice much of a difference before and after Brexit.

@@alice-elizabeth AOK 😒 is the one with the lowest standards, everybody not "welcomed" in any of the other health insurances HAVE to be taken by the AOK ... In case there is a "next time", please go to TKK = Techniker Krankenkasse = the best 😊 Eventhough Brexit wasn't recognised in 2019, but UK was already in the "transition period", therefor lots of things weren't handled as before (Brexit) anymore, but it was sorted in the backround...therefor it could be, that health insurances were treating Brits already different /fees etc... Have a nice weekend 👋 Edit typo/autocorrect

I love how that person just hung up on you (but it is also so rude!), I've heard from other Brits that it's typical when someone calls speaking in English - they'll just hang up! 💀🤣 It thankfully never happened to me though. 😅

One wonders, if I would do a phone call in the UK, speaking German only. ..if Brits would hang up? I bet they would... Btw, half of my family are British... and only my London born spouse speaks a second language.... All the other Brits I know just speak English, opposit to most of us EUropeans 😎 Anyway, I wish you all the best with greetings from the EU27/Germany 😊 Edit typo/autocorrect

@@saba1030 A lot would be polite enough to say 'Sorry I don't speak German' first. There are actually a lot of native languages in the UK, such as Welsh, Scottish Gaelic, Irish, Cornish... I grew up speaking English, Welsh, French in school and later learnt some Italian before learning German to C1 level. My dad speaks some German, mum knows some Polish, uncle speaks French and Latin, some friends know Italian, some German, Welsh... So a lot of us do actually speak a second language. London is London, it's completely different to the rest of the UK.

@@alice-elizabeth 4 languages exist in Germany: high German/official language, Frisian, Lower-Saxon/German language and Sorbic...like Welsh and Scottish they are Unesco world heritage protected minority languages... My answer to you was rather meant, that if I'm able to speak the countries language, or at least are able to speak a couple of words, it would be very nice, to start in the language of that country and THEN asking, if one might be able to speak English... Unfortunately English mothertongue speaking people like to pretend, that it's for granted, that everybody else has to speak English... It's the attitude coming with it, which isn't much appreciated over here on the EUs Continent...as most EUs citizens speak more than just their own language....average are three languages. When my spouse started to learn German, all we got to hear from our English friends and family "what's that for, you're speaking English"... 😒 The proper answer would have been "great and good luck" !! So you think, I've only been in London? 😅 Well, been around in the UK quite a lot.... apart from, that this goes for every country, big cities/or capitals are very different to the rest of the country...
