One of my favorite quotes “When dealing with people, let us remember we are not dealing with creatures of logic. We are dealing with creatures of emotion, creatures bristling with prejudices and motivated by pride and vanity.” Dale Carnegie, How to Win Friends and Influence People

THIS!!!! I never go into a conversation to change anyone's mind. I go in to learn. I have purchased things from people or stores that is higher than other stores because I LIKE the person who is connecting with me. Data does not persuade people. Emotions do. Thanks for a great video today!

Natalie Blais Liked your comment. I don't care how much money I can save, if I don't like the person, I buy nothing. I only buy from people I like.

This is another insanely important lesson on selling. I am Hungarian, so I heard about Semmelweis, but didn't know about the resistance he ran into. And I realized that this is the rule All sales emails violate that I get into my inbox - they try to explain me that it makes more sense to buy their product than continue what I am already doing. They all try to appeal to logic, and then throw in bonuses and scarcity. This is why they fail.

Good stuff as always... Funny.. I have Celiac (among other issues). Learning a lot about food and how it affects people - there are two sides those that are affected and those that think they are affected, not just from gluten, etc. Like you say, doesn't matter, if you are affected, don't eat it. Helps out those with Celiac as it creates a bigger audience, so I thank you, gluten sensitive people. Business wise - Get people to know, like and trust you.. then you can win them over. -or- Scare the crap out of them! Keep up the awesome videos. Peace, -Dennis

This is hella good! When you want to persuades someone, you must win their hearts/emotions first then their mind. Get people to feel the way I feel...then sell. This is a total mind shift! Love it!!!

Thank you, Derek. This is the simplest, most concise explanation I've ever heard about how new beliefs are formed (or not formed). There's a sort of non-funny joke among economists that "beliefs are exogenous" (i.e., they are not based on facts), but the economists don't really know what to do about the "problem". I think you've explained it perfectly.

Yeah, that's why I don't put much effort into changing people's minds anymore or at least I'm much less aggressive about it and quick to say "well, it's obvious that we don't agree on this point" before talking about something else.

BTW I’m Filipino and in the Philippines a bidet is normal for toilets to not have toilet paper is very common in stalls.

This is such a hard pill to swallow when you love data and facts and change your mind about strongly held beliefs on a weekly basis... I love the approach of winning people over emotionally vs. logically. I wish I had watched this video 3 weeks ago before I had a 2 hour argument about drug legalization with my grandparents haha

Brilliant. And so true. Emotions make all the difference. Keep up the great work Dereck.

I love how I was hooked by gluten and then taught something else, that was worth the pay off. These kinds of videos is what I know you for.. this reminds me of your launch for btc. Was that a Jeff walk style product launch? Either way, those btc sales videos were my fav.

haha was about to say BRILLIANT and there it already is right below me already.......I think food is a huge one where belief trumps facts. I really enjoyed this video, it got me thinking.........

I love the psychology you are talking about. We see it all over the place these days. And of course eating gluten free diets make them feel better. Gluten free diets feel better not because of the lack of gluten, but because products with gluten are typically high in carbohydrates (sugars). I'm on a ketogenic diet which is mostly gluten free and yes I'm losing weight and feeling better, but not because of gluten. It's because of lower insulin levels due to a lack of sugar. So people (without celiac) are just blaming the wrong thing for their problems.

Shit man, this has got to be one of your best piece of content EVER. Just following the advice in this video will improve anyone's marketing game. To take things further, marketers should really learn how propaganda works. A good example is how the advertising industry sold cigarettes back in the day, to both men and women.

Oh my gosh this is awesome!! This is true even of the hot buttons of politics and religion. What a great presentation, Derek! So, Take the negative belief of the service I offer and offer even worse negatives if they don’t buy it. Well there is so much more than that in your talk. I have to listen again!
