People are really downplaying this feature...It literally has taken my 6k from collecting dust, to being my new handheld main camera. The stabilization is far more organic looking than any other electronic IS system I have ever seen. It somehow retains the look of handheld while making unwatchable clips look stunning. Perhaps the main problem is that you used such a tight focal length to begin with? On mine, the "strength" control adjusts the crop as well as the smoothness. I also had SIGNIFICANTLY better results on my 24mm on the 6k with my lucadapter focal reducer! I think this is a feature you're going to have to plan to use, and maybe use the awesome Blackmagic feature of adding a cropped window at 80% of the frame so that you can plan for the crop. The speed booster in my 6k also helps immensely with the cropping situation. Also, no one has seemed to see yet, that this feature will even correct the rolling shutter based on the gyro data...that is clutch as hell!

it's not right, from my test and what i saw at other creators. i think the problem is motion sensor calibration is off in the camera or the lens didn;t communicate the right focal length to the camera.

This is a game-changer. No more reliance on lens IS (as the gyro works better when you turn it off, or use manual lenses), so this means I can concentrate on using cine glass rather than lens IS and active mount compatibility. Really cuts down the micro jitters dramatically (rather than trying to make it like a gimbal glide) This is a big step forward! Thanks so much for the video Michael :)

I am collecting information about how to best use the new gyroscope option: Gyro Data Tips (BMPCC) * Record with high shutter speed (90º for normal movements, 45º for fast movements) * For lenses between 27-30mm (FF equivalent) 180º with normal movement * Above 30mm focal length use 90º shutter speed * Use wide angle lenses * Plan wider shoots * 10-20% crop after stabilizing * Add pixel motion blur, to compensate for high shutter speeds * Manually add the focal length in the Metadata if manual lenses are used, it can help stabilization * 75º shutter speed good results * Do not use lens stabilization (IS) + Gyro Data, it gives wrong readings * Calibrate camera sensor before using Gyro Data * For optimal results, use optics that communicate with the camera. (native EF, EF-S, etc)

Excellent advice. To add, many of the Panasonic lenses with OIS (turned on or turned off...) are incompatible with BRAW recording Gyro data. Take clips into Resolve and Gyro stabilisation is not available... interesting. Perhaps to be fixed in next beta or camera firmware??

Pretty interesting. I wonder if they will support Sony's gyro data too down the road. It's a great tool to have, but on thing that always hurts when post stabilizing, I find, is the tangential motion blur. Any time your frame moves due to a shake in any direction the image blurs even slightly. That stabilization corrects that, but then you see a more static blurry image. I find with Sony's similar method I get better results when riding the shutter higher but then, of course, you introduce a different looking image all around. In certain situations it would be very helpful, but def not a silver bullet.

100%. Good call out on adjusting shutter speed/angle. But like you said it takes practice to figure out the best combo of everything. There’s not one size fits all. Would definitely be cool to see them support other cameras gyro data

@@SteveBerwick Agreed, I think it's a helpful tool for specific use cases, of which i"m still not sure what yet, hell if that tracking data was available for the compositing!! but otherwise, a stabilizer always is better.

Something is off with your gyro stabilization, maybe it needs a motion sensor calibration in the camera or the your lens didnt comunicate the corect focal lenght to the camera......Your video structure quality is low, it seems that you have to juice that trend. Disapointed.

This is similar to what I saw on my 4k. I'm still very confused though - why did you compare it to no stabilization instead of comparing it to existing software stabilization options? I can say it is better than any generally used stabilisation in Resolve. It is also better than the lenses I'm using's IS too. You need to remember to switch OFF the lens IS as the Gyro can end up 'fighting' with what the lens has done. I have tested Panasonic Leica 12-60 and Voigtlander 25mm and the gyro stabilisation using lenses with IS turned off or manual lenses is superb.
@bradbell4022
@bradbell4022 2 жыл бұрын
I think an optically stabilised lens is essential. I have a camera with OIS lens and one without. Every single shot using camera without OIS lens needs stabilising to get rid of high frequency shake. This gets VERY tedious. Stabilisation in post is best appreciated when it's not essential
@initialfocus

I so agree that post stabilization should be used only as needed and not as an essential part of a full workflow haha

The strange thing here is that the Gyro stabe works 100% BETTER when there is not OIS used. I have a 12-60 F4 Leica that looks OK with just the OIS. But turn OFF the OIS and use Gyro Stabe and it's worlds apart. Use it with the stabe ON and then use Gyro makes it look quite awkward. I also note that many lenses with OIS won't work with Gyro on Resolve at the moment.
@bradbell4022
@bradbell4022 2 жыл бұрын
@@timrober75 Of course it doesn't! Very insightful! OIS would totally mess it up: camera body still moving but no directly analogous impact on image. I guess the next test is which works better: OIS or gyro? I personally love the effect OIS has on the footage, beyond merely stabilising. It adds grace to the movement somehow. I don't think post-stabilisation can compete
@timrober75
@timrober75 2 жыл бұрын
@@bradbell4022 I'm planning to use manual lenses more and process the stabilisation as a matter of course when handheld. Looking at the leica with OIS ON and no Gyro, and the OIS OFF with Gyro engaged and it removes the micro jitters and 'feels' too me much more like quality handheld footage. Doesn't necessarily give the 'gimbal' smooth feels, but that's not on my list. Relying on the post process means I don't have to rig-out or balance gimbals so I'm a bit free-er with the shot... Obviously I am also relying on my 'ninja walk' and keeping my arms close in, but beyond that it does change the goal-posts somewhat.
@timrober75
@timrober75 2 жыл бұрын
I'm learning as I go... just used some longer lenses (45-200 and 100-300) and noticed that the gyro hardly helps at all... as all the 'jitters' are magnified and less involving the moving of the body. In these cases, as you said Brad, the OIS is far better. Therefore I can only rely on the gyro for wide lenses with camera in motion (rather than just trying to hold it still). Everyday is a school day!

Thanks for getting this comparison out so quickly for us that haven't been able to trust the Resolve18 beta yet due to the need for stability. I will say this stabilization seems... underwhelming? Compared to other gyro stabilization methods of post stabilization like Reel Steady this seems like it takes a bit of the edge off micro jitters and not much else. I am curious how this method of stabilization would look with a slightly heavier and well balanced rig with more inertia! Would it defeat the purpose? Or would it look more like a much heavier rig with the perfect amount of sway in the footage?
@initialfocus
@initialfocus 2 жыл бұрын
All solid questions and opinions. I definitely need to do more testing in more situations. Wide angle lenses should get much better results I think and with heavier movement shots like you said. Most of the issues seemed to be in the Z axis up and down walking. So I wonder if on a gimbal or steadicam if this will make it look magical
@genesis344
@genesis344 2 жыл бұрын
@@initialfocus Wider angle lenses would definitely get better results as parallax and orientation specific stabilization will have an easier time with less apparent motion in frame. It makes a lot of sense that Z axis stabilization would struggle a bit! I think you’ll find that translational movement (regardless of the axis) will always be more difficult to stabilize if it’s stabilizing it at all. The in camera gyro is most likely limited to what is referred to as 3DOF, which only records orientation data, as opposed to 6DOF which would be a gyro+accelerometer. Hope all of that jargon makes sense!

Honestly, I think the approach they're taking to the gyro stabilization is the sweet spot. Compared to Catalyst browse, Resolve flies through stabilizing the clips using the gyro data and in my experience so far it functionally removes all the micro-jitters when working on a gimbal. I don't think beefing up the stabilization for fully handheld pans and walking shots without any lens IS would be a good call since it will probably require a ton more time to stabilize each clip. As always, if working handheld it comes down to either building up a heavy rig or using a lens with good OIS.

It isn't perfect however; I've noticed some serious aliasing in sharp edges when using the gyro stabilization that makes it unusable at the moment, but I'm hoping that's just a bug that'll get patched out sooner rather than later.

It definitely helps but not really by much. Still it's better than no stabilization so I'm not complaining.

That could make sense since it would have clearer frames to analyze. Def need more testing 👍🏼
@diedevanvree
@diedevanvree 2 жыл бұрын
Actually it won’t. The frame isn’t being analysed. It is the gyro data. Shooting hfr only helps avoid the motionblur that get visual when stabilizing.
@initialfocus
@initialfocus 2 жыл бұрын
You would be correct if it was only looking at the gyro data but Blackmagic has stated it’s a combo of gyro data and AI, so my guess is there is some frame analyzing going on

So far I have tried the gyro stabilization 6 or 7 times and it was completely unusable. It is likely just to do with the type of movement in my particular footage. But just a heads up to anyone who needs to hear it, this feature might not help you out at all. Or it might be perfect.

I tested this with my 6K Pro and the Sigma 18-35 and it looks MUCH better than this. I have a theory: we know that gyro doesn't work with an IS lens. You're using cine lenses so of course they don't have IS. HOWEVER -- the gyro calculation requires an accurate lens profile (mostly focal length) to make the correct counter adjustment based on the gyro data. I think the problem is that your cine lenses aren't communicating lens data (focal length) to the camera. If you swipe horizontally on your camera, what info about the lens shows up? My camera recognizes the Sigma 18-35 and records the focal length and focus distance (you can see under "lens data" tab on camera) in realtime on a per-frame basis. The gyro stabilization needs this info in order to work properly!
@jeremiahkuehne2400
@jeremiahkuehne2400 2 жыл бұрын
To get around this, if your lens isn't communicating the focal length and it's just a prime cine lens, you could manually input the focal length into the metadata when you shoot and that should make a massive difference in the gyro stabilization quality!
@initialfocus
@initialfocus 2 жыл бұрын
That’s a very interesting point! Yes my cine lens doesn’t show any data on that screen by default. I’ll input it manually and do some re tests!
@christianblinde
@christianblinde 2 жыл бұрын
I realized the same, but manually entering focal length did not fix it for me. Maybe you need data for a lens that exists (not focal length only)? Do you guys know if there is a way to change the data in resolve in order for easier testing?
@jeremiahkuehne2400
@jeremiahkuehne2400 2 жыл бұрын
@@christianblinde I looked around in Resolve and couldn’t find a way to manually enter it (maybe the Fusion tab has a way of accessing that info?). You could do it with the BRAW SDK but that’s beyond my scope. That’s a bummer to hear that manually entering the focal length in camera doesn’t seem to have an effect. I remember back on the Sony cameras with ibis you’d have to manually enter the focal length of an adapted lens if you wanted ibis to work properly so I was hoping this would be the same. I’m pretty happy with the results I got with my 18-35mm though! Super excited to be able to use the Blackmagic as a walk-around camera!
@jeremiahkuehne2400
@jeremiahkuehne2400 2 жыл бұрын
@@christianblinde I just had another thought - have you calibrated your motion sensor recently in your camera? I’ve never needed to do it but that could be another factor. I really wish Blackmagic did an in-depth video about the details of getting a good gyro stabilization…
