Hi ya. I'm guessing your dad's not a pro hairstylist. The key here was to take the initial length uniform and to reduce the bulk. Then once the weight line or step was cut which is the main feature of the style and done quite well .. everything else came together. You might want to try a zero undercut on your next trim, it will look striking and bring your features out even more. All the best x

You had all the makings of a disaster, a garbage bag in lieu of a cape, your father was drinking beer, and he doesn’t cut your hair on a regular basis. Good news is that you did not have to shave it all off. It appears that he did exactly what you wanted, and a happy recipient means it was was a success, except the hair down your back. I have been giving haircuts to friends, acquaintances, my wife, her friends and my step children for decades and cutting short hair is definitely harder than trimming long hair, especially when you wanted such a precise bowl cut. Does your mother trust him to cut her hair? I am also a firm believer in using a real hair cape to keep itchy hair clippings off your clothes and from getting down your back.

My mum has the most amazing curls - so no way would he be let loose on those! I was very impressed he did such a great job, I’ve had a good few lockdown haircuts from flatmates now and think I’ve had the haircut for enough years to know how I like it, but definitely need a real cape next time, it took a lot of washes to get the hair out of my shirt!!

Yes, a cape is a must have! I hike with my dog and have had conversations with ladies that had horror stories of home haircuts with no cape. I met a lady on a hiking trail that was upset about her hair appointment being canceled, she was going to take a pair of kitchen shears to cut her unicorn ponytail hack. I talked her down from it, but she made me promise to bring my my hair tool kit to give her a proper haircut. Well a few days later she ran up to me on the trail and asked if I brought my haircutting tool pouch. I did, so I set up by a picnic table, caped her, sectioned her really thick, long hair and gave her a haircut. Took pictures along the process, that she posted on Facebook. Her friends were commenting she was crazy to get her hair cut in the park, other friends were saying, yes it is crazy, why didn’t you invite me to come? And hey can I get a haircut in the park, can I make a reservation, or just walk up and ask for a haircut? Random acts of kindness and senseless acts of beauty. Be kind to others and just give of your talents freely.

Yes, I thought that she just wanted a small trim in her waist length hair and when I held up my hand to ask her how many fingers worth do you want off and she said twice that. So I caped her, sectioned and pinned up her extremely thick hair, then cut the 7” of hair off the bottom layer, and let her hair down in increments to trim each layer. Being her hair was so thick, I took 1/2” increments. The nice thing about doing a haircut in the park is that you don’t have to clean up afterwards. The birds and other animals will use it for nests. I have done other unplanned haircuts that were fun, several years ago, a lady whose hair was to her thighs asked me to cut her hair to her hips at a picnic and another friend of my wife asked me to give her a boy short haircut on my deck. I did her whole haircut with clippers, different attachments and clippers over the comb cutting. Then tidied up her neckline with the peanut clippers. She was quite pleased with the results.
