I graduated from Hillsdale in 2002. Most of what is being said here is misleading, and reads like it was made by people who have no knowledge of the school. For the record, I am an atheist and was an atheist when I attended Hillsdale. At no point in any class was the name “Jesus” mentioned. We were mostly studying the classics, and were more likely to talk about the Greek gods than the Christian one. It isn’t a fundamentalist school, as asserted here for rhetorical reasons. According to the NYTImes education article, it “wears its religion lightly”. But not so in the Salon “article”! Would it be so difficult to actually go to the school like the Times did to their credit instead of just asserting nonsense? Hillsdale played an important role in founding the Republican Party, so even when Trump is gone they will be connected with the Republican party. It is also a very good college, ranking 2 in Michigan and 46 overall among LACS in America. The typical public school or college in America fares far worse.

I attended Albion College in Michigan which was in the same athletic conference as Hillsdale. Hillsdale was a failing weak college known only as a jock school. Then George Roche took over in 1971 and made it into the bastion of very conservative 'values' that is until he was forced out after it was revealed that his values included banging his daughter-in-law for 19 years, leading to her suicide. No problem, de Vos, Amway and others shored up the cesspool and continued to preach family values to everyone else.

That's a good way to put it. America is going to need to come to terms with these hyper-powerful hyper-funded lobbyist institutions. I'm Australian and these organizations have influence in a global scale. By virtue of their power and influence in America they have effects over a lot more than just America. For Australia, Canada, Japan, Mexico, Britain and many others America is the biggest and most influential trading and security partner we have. This place is a concern but its not the real problem and I wish people like Thom would start talking about Harvard and Yale a lot more. That's where the Federalist Society started and that crowd scare me more than anything else. Do you know that 14 of the last 18 SCOTUS judges are Harvard or Yale including 8 of the current 9? Do you know that 5 of the 7 short listed to replace Breyer including Ketanji Brown Jackson are Harvard or Yale. Do you know that both Clintons, both Obamas and Ted Cruz are all Harvard or Yale while Ted Cruz's wife is Harvard and a senior manager at Goldman Sachs? Do you know that AG Merrick garland is both a Federalist Society member and went to Harvard? You might not realize it but that influence affects the entire Western World. Particularly regarding SCOTUS because that's what all of America's giant tech and business monopolies hide behind. George Carlin famously said "Its a big club and we're not in it"

I have gotten their newsletter for years too. "Know your enemy". I always fill out their "opinion surveys" from an extreme left wing point of view! Must drive them crazy! They are marketing living in a permanent 1955 with Ike and Mamie in the White House and all POC and Women know their place. Everyone reads "Readers Digest" and "Boys Life". Every thing is Norman Rockwell certified except for seeing a stag movie once every three years down at the Rotary Club basement. That version of America does still sell even though it never really ever existed.

Took an on-line collage course in the Constitution. Let's say it was more their interruption. They have the backing of many right-wing people like Hanity. I received a survey that wanted to know what I thought of Obama's left-wing policies. They used the term left wing policies. Most people have never heard of them until recently. Just like we'd never heard of the Heritage Foundation, Federalist Society, CATO Institute and other right wing institutions and lobbyists until recently. America is going to need to comes to terms with these people because the influence they have on American politics is starting to effect other countries. I am embarrassed to say that I am from Michigan. I have known about Hillsdale College for most of my life and it was exactly as they said in this video. 20 years ago no one considered it a right wing school.I suppose every State has it's bad actors like the Devos & Prince family. I recall that Amway supported the Apartheid Government of P.W. Botha in South Africa. However, that was a handy tool to use whenever being approached by anyone from Amway. I would tell them that and of course they had no idea.

What I try and explain to Americans is that this stuff has gone global. These sorts of institutions that get hijacked by right wing publicity and propaganda machines is common across the entire Western World. Australia has an array of right wing think tanks all calling themselves "something something INSTITUTE" all pretending to be neutral academic places where very smart people to outstanding work for the benefit of everyone. @@falconquest2068 I attended Hillsdale twenty years ago. It was definitely considered conservative. It is being vilified by the left because some graduates found placement in the Trump administration, and also because it has been successful. Not everyone hates capitalism or wants to radically change America. Some people want to study the classics that have been studied for hundreds of years instead of a set of books approved by Antonio Gramsci. Apparently the left cannot allow a non-left leaning academic institution to exist. Fewer than half of Hillsdale students voted for Trump, btw. 90 percent voted for Romney. So I guess it is more of a Romney school than a Trump school at any rate.

The absurdity of your statement is in the fact that most and immense listeners you are addressing are intellectually fit enough and better than most right wing followers. The right has little to offer to the critical and hungry minds of the left for quality education and journalism. While the right dwells in serving an obsolete and failed set of ideas of social dysfunction we know as capitalism, the left thrives on innovation and progressive contributions to society.
