You know what I like about the Double Toasted gang? They're a good representation of how all people should react to most of these situations. Yeah, racism is idiotic and wrong, but before you start speaking out against something, make sure it is actually offensive/racist so you aren't the idiot in the situation. Also, Korey makes a good point. While some people are getting triggered by cotton, there are things going on that are actually wrong and harmful to society. Private prison systems, police brutality, law enforcement targeting certain people and wrongfully incarcerating people, the country being further in debt because so much money is spent on unnecessary wars and military efforts, etc.

All dangerous criminals, who have committed atrocious crimes (like first degree murder) should be made to work till death, this way they would actually contribute something to humanity instead of just being a drain on society. No. Cotton flowers are very real. I worked at a flower distribution house. One of the oldest in the country. We sold em. But it makes you a bit un easy seeing it up close and in person. That is the way some of us feel they hate the cotton plant. It took me a year to actually touch it myself. To be mad wit cotton plants you gotta say the same for sugar cane and tobacco plants too because those are the 3 plants spread thru the diaspora as it pertains to slavery...But she shouldn't be angry at the plant or hobby lobby.

Good money says that if she walked by that exact same display a week earlier, she'd have been indifferent. Rather, she probably heard about the Lipscomb incident (which has WAY more context to it and wasn't strictly about raw cotton) and decided she had something new to get upset about. I don't see where anyone was making much of a fuss about a random plant before that. Add to that... Slaves didn't just gather cotton. They harvested EVERYTHING. Where's the outrage over fall corn and squash displays? Or if you want to get more current... Where's her outrage over diamonds, chocolate, coffee, and a number of other things currently harvested in horrible conditions by people making a sub minimum wage? How many of her clothes were crafted in a Chinese sweatshop? The sad truth is that, unless you don't eat or otherwise consume, it's incredibly difficult to avoid all of the things that have been touched by human atrocities like slavery. I'm sure you could make an effort to purchase carefully, but that's of course assuming that you're lucky enough to be able to afford things like fresh fruits and vegetables at all.

There's a whole hierarchy of underpaid-overworked people fitted in these corporations, and having the extra layer of incarcerated and overseas (think "sweatshops") exploitation really drives the thought that we're living in a society of slaves and institutions powered by them.

Nothing like a hot cup of racism to get your Monday morning started! I was browsing alone today in the narrow Halloween themed aisles of the store searching for items to use for my artwork. Aside from myself no one else was in the aisle. As two older (50’s maybe) white women approached the section I was in discussing products, one of them says aloud, “oh look at all of the cotton!” While the other woman proceeds to laugh. You can probably deduce that I’M a black woman and it’s sad that Hobby Lobby has indefinitely lost a customer thanks to the idiotic behavior of others.

There is an argument that such system in prison helps with rehabilitation as they train the prisoners with new skill that will help them reintegrate in the workforce. There should be a follow up where the companies should be incentivised for hiring excons that have been in such program.

Privatizing prisons was a horrible idea. Many states signed contracts with these companies that make the state keep prisoner number up or pays high fines. This means states make laws to keep people in prison. Capitalism is fine but prison system should not be run for profit.

Honestly when it comes to raw cotton I would not display it in my store because of the history it has with whites making us pick it! I would not even want it as a decorative item in my house because of the history. And on the rope in a hardware store no you should not get mad about there just being rope! But what if the rope was tied into a noose and sold there. What if Hobby Lobby had rope tied into a noose and was selling it as a decorative item? Not associated with any Halloween decorations just by itself like with the cotton! Would you want to see it there? Would you want to buy it for decorating your house?
