StopFear Okay I actually had to physically stop myself from spewing volatile hatred for the offensive way you described Endless Legend’s music. Personally, I and everyone I know absolutely loves the music, but if you dislike the style then obviously it’ll sour the whole experience. As for the gameplay, I agree that the combat movement is fairly slow. I would personally prefer something like 1.5x speed, and while I personally think 2x speed is slightly too fast, it does make multiplayer much easier to get through. As for the movement speed, I actually appreciate it because when you have units with 9 tile movement ranges it allows for adjusting positioning. I personally love Endless Legend, and it actually baffles me that someone is asking about patience on a video by a guy who is most well known for his Civilization 6 content. Even so, I will admit that there is a steep learning curve with Endless Legend, and if you aren’t absolutely wowed with it on your first play through I could see how you wouldn’t really feel compelled to get into it. I haven't watched the video yet, but I am a part of Open Dev and I'll leave my own thoughts here: 1. The game is more like Endless legend than Civ, which is what I expected, and I prefer Endless Legend and Space(s) so that's fine by me, but I wouldn't call it a "Civ Killer". 2. The tech tree is smaller than I expected, but that might be because it's divided by the era you're in, so it might be more of an illusion thing. That said, every single tech (with maybe the example of horsemanship) felt really significant, they all packed a punch, with pretty much no "this is just something you want so you can get to the good stuff" techs. The smaller tech tree also kinda made you have to think in different terms, more short term, with a theoretically easy access to "endgame" tech for the era you're in. (and to a lesser extent, the next, since scientific cultures can see the next). 3. Building out all the specialized quarters in fun combinations was genuinely really satisfying, and the fact that you can build out from outposts, mines, etc. made things even more different and complex than in EL. I only realized at the end that castles and harbors can be placed pretty much any distance from other quarters, and since you can build out from them you're incentivized to make them to produce more roads and access good but distant tiles as well as for the bonuses they provide. I also like the idea of having a bunch of castles throughout multiple territories and switching between them as spawn-points for units to deploy anywhere, more as just a wacky strategy than a serious one though. 4. Resources work kinda similar to the original Endless Space. An extractor gives one unit of a resource. Strategic resources are needed to build certain units and improvements. Luxuries give buffs to all cities, and multiple units stack. Unlike in Endless Space, having a surplus of strategic resources did not seem to give an industry discount on things that need it, so unless there's something disabled for the scenario that's one difference. Luxury resources are kinda generic, Salt and Coffee both give +2 Food and +5 Stability, for example. I'm assuming that having different luxuries (or lots of the same one) will play a role in trade or diplomacy or something as a consequence. 5. Exploration and hunting was really powerful. Warriors made in cities or gotten from curiosities can make a lot of money by killing off mammoths. Only true Galaxy Brains know City Defense is the earliest economic tech. 6. Chopping was basically useless. A single scout takes 4 turns to chop a forest, needs 45 industry to be made, and only produces 10 industry after the forest is felled. (it's not per turn, I checked) It would take 5 forests and 20 turns for that scout to make 5 industry! I've heard that larger armies can chop faster, but the only use I can think of for chopping is to carve out more land for farms, which usually isn't a problem anyways. 7. Food is really powerful, but needs to be built up. Pop growth is tier based, there are specific levels of prosperity linked to growth/decline of population, and you're either at a given level or you're not. This means that the only short term benefit of food production is taking farmers and having them do other things. Once you make enough food, however, your pop growth basically doubles, and the speed of growth doesn't depend on how many pops you have like it does in other games, so you'll continue to super grow until your population ends up eating enough to knock you down to normal growth. 8. Combat was interesting, different enough from EL to be novel, with a smaller arena, simpler initiative, and more of a focus on positioning in a tight space, but we were only fighting animals and I didn't really make many units other than scouts and warriors, (and by make I mean found while exploring) so we will get more accurate impressions of it later. Promising now though. 9. Science Mode seems kinda broken, not just because it might be too powerful (especially when combined with researching an era ahead) but mainly because it seems the conversion of other resources into Science is borked. With all of my pops put in Industry or money, I was making more Science in SM than if I put them all in Science! (also in Science Mode) 10. The game is absolutely beautiful, and the fact that the ambient noises get louder when you zoom in and change gradually based on your location is great, as is the cultural music. Chasing around people in city squares and on roads, as well as wild animals, with the giant terrifying Sky Pointer was fun too! 11. We might have some hints as to Trade. Historically, in EL trade was based on roads and the sea regions. In this game, the description of some ships say they are used for both trade and war. I would have thought that this was flavor text, except for the fact that unlinked outposts a) build roads. b) have a (currently minimal) Trade and Resources tab, implying that at the least they represent way stops for trade routes, and c) the option to build harbors, when the only other options are resource extractors, moving the post, turning it into a city, and linking it. Not even defensive quarters like castles can be built by an unlinked outpost. This makes me think that making a navy and commanding them to serve as civilian traders could be possible, (other tasks that would be done by "civilian" units in other games like settling land and chopping trees are done by military units) or at least a way to help protect trade routes, and that very tall merchant empires might rely on naval dominance. 12. Only a few of the improvements were flat, most improve tiles, or jobs, or quarters, or give resources based on territories owned, or do miscellaneous things like give castles more vision range. Getting a feel for whether you should be building more quarters or building improvements might be something you have to get a feel for over time. Any improvement that gives "+1 X on exploitation" gives that to ALL tiles, BTW, not just ones that already provided X. 13. It was a little laggy, and my computer is actually really nice, but I couldn't really tell the difference between the medium quality and the better ones, so it was fixable. 14. The situational events were neat. I saw some people get some that I didn't, and vice versa. It looks like a lot of them have multiple trigger conditions, activating only when all of them are fulfilled, and assuming that there are plenty of events, that could make the game feel a lot more organic. I also have a lot of impressions about other parts of the game like the win condition, civics, etc. that didn't show up in this scenario, and they're all positive thus far! Overall, this shows signs of being an early build, but is still very polished, and looks like an early build for a damn good game! :)

Definitely looking forward to trying this game out. The game looks beautiful, but in a way I think it looks a little bit too clean-cut and modern if that makes sense? Idk. Yeah I'm not holding much hope for the civ devs. It's been ages since they've added ideas that weren't an inferior copy of what made their competitors unique. Civ 6 is kind of still good despite their lazyness, although the dlc practice is paradox tier outrageous, and their AI CA tier shite, but civ 7 will be a dumpsterfire if it even comes out, ever. It's the end of the road. So I'mma hope at least these guys do make a good killer, let it be swift, not a painful slog as it's progressively turning into.

obviously, the majority of people commenting about Civ 6 haven't heard about this company before and their other 4x games they make. This has way more in common with Endless Legend then it does with The Civ franchise. The only thing this shares with Civ, from what I've seen, is that its using history as its basis for the playable "factions", not Elves and Aliens

This does look like the type of game I would like. I play both Civ Endless games. And I often thought civ games could do with game mode that starts in a pre-historic era with mammoths and such
@TheAndorianWarrior4 жыл бұрын
Hopefully not, i have played civ since the first one on DOS back in the day. That being said, i think Firaxis has got complacent with civ. Civ 4 was a great game, with the possible exception that battles were majorly OP in defending (it took me nearly 20 units to take a city with 2-3). Civ 5 was a step forward in changing the map layout, and esp dealing with the stack of death problem. The 1UPT system in my mind is the best introduction added to civ since its inception and in civ 5 good tactical knowledge meant you could take a city with 3-4 units. In civ 6 they destroyed that work again, while they kept the 1UPT system, you can clearly see that defending has again been boosted to ridiculous levels. Nothing makes this more apparent then the Loyalty system. It creates a few problems that are nearly impossible to get around, for example trying to conquer a player on a different continent is very hard now, even with governors and policies to help with loyalty its very hard to take and hold these cities. Also the loyalty system reduces your ability to setup a game how you want......for example, if you now play earth map, you cannot place Dutch, French and English in the game, because one of them will always fail loyalty and be out the game in 20ish turns. I find it absolutely incredible, that they didn't stop to think, duh we really should make sure capitals cannot be flipped. Also, in civ 5 units were made to be slightly more expensive compared to civ 4, in reaction to the 1UPT. In civ 6 they were increased to ridiculous cost. When you can build a wonder quicker then a settler, something is very, very wrong. Another main bug to bare in the game at present is the science, it moves way, waaaaayyyy too fast. An example is this, I've played over 4000 hours of civ 6, in that time I've built.....2 science districts. Only ever 2. Because the system for science is so badly done. You get science based on your population, so basically the bigger you are the better your be at science. Now you can always make a few small cities and pump then with science, that's true. But by having a large empire, with alot of population, your given many more options later in the game, such as going diplomatic or conquest. The whole science tree needs alot of looking at and really engaging in a different way. The boosts for example are simply too easy. Most are things your going to do anyway in the game, such as build a spearman, kill a unit, start a trade route.....your going to do these regardless of whether they boost tech or not.....these should have been for more specific and much harder to do boosts.....maybe trade could have been complete a 20 turn over seas trade route, or kill a ranged unit, melee unit and cav unit with the same spearman.... The best thing about humankind, is that it will hopefully give a kick up the ass of firaxis who will make a much better civ 7.

Something I have noticed about Humankind in relation to other 4X games, is it truly feels like a finished product that has reached its full potential, unlike many of the other 4X games that have come out in recent years. For example, many of the endless games feel unfinished, or at least not meeting its full potential. To be fair, Civ 6 is the same way, and Civ 5 did not feel finished until gods and kings, and brave new world. Humankind looks like it is going to be a rare item, in which it has become not only a piece of art, but a finished product on day one. At least I hope so. No other 4X since civ 5 and maybe some old fashioned board games have really scratched that itch. My one concern is the multiplayer aspect at the moment, but hopefully they can provide that as well.

I've played Civ from day one, including most all versions, add-ons, DLCs, spin-offs et al., and have seen many challengers to this turn-based game come and go. Humankind certainly seems to be a worthy contender, as it does address some issues I have with Civ, such as city placement, the lack of what in Humankind is apparently called an outpost, more advanced military tactics, the introduction of elevation beyond the simple hills of Civ, and quite a few others. It'll take a crowbar to make me part from Civ, but it can be done, just as Skylines replaced SimCity and Transport Fever licked my older turn-based railroad builders to the curb. I was surprised by just how much can be done on this map in 29 turns. Like, expanding is extremely powerful in this game, maybe even more than money... maybe Best thing so far about Humankind is the Merging of Regions/territories, as I can see that helping alleviate the micromanaging nightmare that happens near the end of 4X games where the entire map is filled with 30 or so cities that each require management. Merging two cities into one to create a super city alleviates that problem.
