I don't think you are downplaying the character. I think what happens is that you for maining the character you have a bigger understanding of the characters weaknesses because you are dealing with the rest of the cast, where your opponents, those that don't main Hwoarang... Are mostly just seeing his "streanths" because they have to fight against him. That's for every character/player, also this will depend on the level of understanding of tekken that the player got.

I think for you, he’s a great option because you’re one of the best in the world with a him. But I’ll be honest I don’t think he’s all that good. I started out with him. I played about 500 matches with him and then switched to Law. I would say I beat him 95% of the time when I play against him. He needs some buffs in my opinion. I don’t think people realize how easy he is to interrupt and you’re right ever since that Nerf he’s become very easy to launch. (at least for me)

I think, within reason, after PLAYING Hwoarang and Labbing him... The Down 3, 4 Nerf was warranted. Because of the insane Frame Advantage, Hwo gets to make a more or less Guaranteed Play where the Opponent can't really Sidestep/Sidewalk, can't Backdash out, and can't even Mash Armour Moves. A lot of characters don't have access to a truly Guaranteed Mix even when they Hit. SOME do, but it's uncommon at the highest levels of the Game when you've done your homework. Yes, before there were Guaranteed Punishes if you were fast enough and playing a Character with a High Crushing Counter-Hit, but now almost if not all Characters are given a true Launch Punish. This is reasonable because the Range is not bad on the Attack and Hwo can do it from Left Flamingo as well. I understand Hwo Players' frustration in the Nerf and how it was an Attack that was unchanged for years, but most characters would kill for such a potent Mixup-Starter in Game like Tekken where there are multiple answers for your Offence even when you Hit someone. Hwo's D 3, 4 still nets a Guaranteed Mix and could let you bully weaker and/or nervous Players trying to Punish it. EVEN NOW, you can still kinda do that but it's way less consistent. D 3, 4 still Transitions into Right Flamingo and doesn't do the heavy Stagger Block Animation. It's fine. It's just now risky more consistently instead of risky depending on the Opposing Character, which it should have been anyway.

In heat, I believe Hwo is S tier. Outside of heat, the problem is, he is just very predictable. When he gets his leg up, it is either this or that, and the problem is, there are 'gaps' in between his moves. He, basically, tells the other player, "You have time to guess" when he goes into his flamengo stances, especially the ones that require holding a button. Reina has the same problem, as she has a huge gap in some of her strings as well, giving time to the player to react. He should have more moves like df 3+4.

About your power crush point for a new player at 22:30 in my mind it’s weird that certain attacks don’t break armour. This might be a weird argument but I kinda feel that just frame attacks should break through armour at times? E.g. an electric or Jfsr not being able to go through armour seems weird as they are quite high skill launchers. But yeah power crushes design in general seem weird in this game

So then a character like Lidia would have like 5/6 powercrush moves? It would make the game unbalanced if just frame moves were power crushes, that is unless every character had just frame moves. Electrics already have the benefit of being unpunishable launchers, and just frame moves give you more damage for executing them right. Also electrics aren’t that hard when you’ve practiced them and gotten used to the inputs, if they had power crush properties that would easily make them the most broken tools in the game. A long range power crush launcher that can’t be punished and absorbs attacks… yikes.

like, i played some t7, but i just pressed buttons for a few weeks then gave up and played something else. t8 is when i decided i was gonna learn tekken for real. that being said the new systems do seem normal to me, since this is the first tekken that im like, really really playing. i enjoy power crushes and heat. with power crushes it makes me feel like i have a legit tool against mashers. i feel heat adds a cool level of strategy to rounds. do you wait and save your heat for a late round turn around or do you try to engage early for an early round domination attempt? or do you shoot for a mid round blitz? do you use your heat through specific moves or through a combo extension? all of these different heat strategies are on top of what was already there with tekken and each char will wanna make diff decisions. im not gonna list my opinion of all of the new systems like chip and guard break and chip health deleting throws, but it all seems like a part of the game to me and nothing really seems out of place.

I would like to say I want to play Hwoarang but I just don't like him and I've found new picks like Law, Dragunov, Nina and Alisa that tend to get the job done if I don't mess up Hwoarang ranks top on my list of disliked characters excluding him from my personal roster for the time being we aren't just talking strength either there are other reasons. Reina is there for personality reasons and King has kind of floated out of the roster...I also dislike Victor but will grudgingly admit he can be powerful if you nail his kit.

What I need to know is why they removed so much from him, from Tekken 7, that allowed him to compete. Because 7 was so heavily focused on doing BIG numbers and have solid defense, Hwoarang at least did super well just due to him having some of the the best wall carry in game, and a super versatile kit. He might have not been overly strong in one category, but he could still do a good deal and pressure people with the right skillset. Now, don't get me wrong, they did good by us this go round too. Allowing us to use 3~4, while in right flamingo is pretty fire. The ability to extend off of UF 3+4f, also a fine addition. Another great addition is that d4,4 acts as a combo extender now too. 2,3 from RS DF4 is GREAT, especially against the wall. All great for making his structure a little bit more diverse. The problems are, NOW, not only can EVERYONE do decent numbers and wall carry, but they also made his combo strategy harder with little/less reward than he used to get, and then they turned around and either nerfed some of his better options or flat out removed his CH potential where he needed/ used to have it. Changes I can somewhat understand and deal with, are the nerfs to d3,4, and subsequently, the rebalance of d4,3 in RF. Especially given they added an extendable 3 to it, for CH. The removal of DF 1+2 is like, who would even miss that button, fortunately. Now, onto the BIG problems. Right out the gate. . . WHY THE FUCK IS THERE NO COMBO POTENTIAL ON RAW BACK LASH?! D3 in RF doesn't launch anymore, why? B4 in RF doesn't crumple people anymore? Even on counter? Why? 2, 2 in RS doesn't launch anymore, on ch, why? B3 in LF doesn't launch unless you waste burst on it? And the route is EXTREMELY limited, why?! Why is FF4, 3 in RS just gone all together? LS UB 3,3 and 3,4? ( I understand UB3 is the new soccer kick, but it was fine as it was prior. It could easily be used to replace DF 1+2 alternatively.) These are all great mid-poke tools that he had to ensure people couldn't just duck on auto-pilot. I personally fail to grasp why they thought the removal of these tools was the way to go for him. WS4,4 gets beat BY SO. MANY. THINGS. DESPITE BEING 11F? like excuse the fuck out of me for wanting to have a wake-up option outside of 2,3, which I can also barely use or get more than 55 damage off, IF that. And let's not even get into how his heat-smash or sometimes even right flamingo 4,3 flat out won't wall splat in some of the dumbest scenarios. I could go on and on about some of the other nuance shit. But these examples are by far the worst offenders that leave me questioning just what the hell they were thinking when they were altering his tool-set. Anyway, I'm just getting my thoughts out as I practice. If you've anything with substance to input, by all means, clue me in.

Tier list is a nice thing to argue, but it dont have actual meaning, and i guess u streamers like it because it creates conflict and, at the end of the day, u get the views u expect to get; like politicians do, divide and conquer. As humans we cant avoid to compare things from our own point of view, so saying hwo is not top ten or the opposite doenst mean anything, he is strong, not just "decent" or "good", he is not broken like Drag, Jin, Nina, Feng, Shaheen, Law, and King but he needs some atention (d3 4, no matter what u say, u know why every1 talks about it, it is cheap even if it is punishable, Rstance df3 its a bit mad too since its a homming mid + on block that covers Hwo main weakness, the tracking once u get some distance, it shouldnt be plus or it should be a high). Actually this game was created by professionals that put a lot of effort in giving every char a chance to win, so, there is no weak char in this game. Yes, there r broken chars and moves in there yet, the data is accumulating day after day and they have more data than us. I just hope they use that data to fix the game and not the opinions of the players, doesnt care if this players r professionals or average players.

Tierlist remove the player element. There's the character, hwoarang. Then there's the player, Kwiss. He very briefly touched on that point when talking about Steve. But the list refers to character match ups and specific situations. When ppl call characters weak it comes down to matchups and how characters interact it isn't necessarily calling them in unviable. But yada yada that's all i got to say. I don't see Kwiss as someone who is trying to separate for content

Let's also not forget professionals mess up, daily. If there are broken characters, the potential for weak characters exists. The rest could also all just be normal. But to say there's no weak characters because professionals made the game is retarded. Some kits are much easier to use and work in much more situations. In a literal sense everyone is viable, but tht doesnt make them strong. Especially when u add the player element back to the conversation, having to be so much more involved than your opponent for an entire tournament is beyond difficult. N I play the game, so that's no disrespect to devs i enjoy the game. To ignore the opinions of the players is also not smart. Obviously there needs to be a balance when addressing opinions but tekken is notoriously difficult and technical. Gotta know who to listen to, and generally. professionals are quite informed. Before the change if heat bursts were triggered at the same time they would clash and both characters were pushed back. Now if that happens the second one will always win which makes no sense because why would they reward the 2nd player for being “late” (which may not even be the case because they could still be activated on the same frame but the animation zoom ins will never trigger at the same time). So it looks like an oversight of the way heat bursts interact with power crushes
