Ireland was once known as one of the most Catholic countries in the entire world. In the 1950's and 60's, it was estimated that about 90% of the Irish population went to Mass on Sundays. However now in 2023, that number has dropped significantly to around 30%. For this St. Patrick's Day, EWTN News reporter Colm Flynn traveled to his home country to talk to members of the Church about why they think the faith has declined so much in the Emerald Isle.
Hosted by Montse Alvarado, EWTN News In Depth welcomes guests in a discussion of current events in the Church, politics, and culture, all through the lens of the Catholic faith. The show airs on EWTN Fridays at 8pm ET. It re-airs on Saturdays at 1am ET & Sundays at 11am ET
This show is about finding out who we are as people and as Catholics, and how we can confidently live our faith in the world. It is produced by EWTN News: www.ewtnnews.com

I'm from Ireland. All is not lost, many still go to Mass, pray and have faith. In my local Cathedral all ages attend Mass, I also see a rise in people receiving Holy Communion kneeling on the tongue. The media in Ireland try and make out only elderly practice the faith but this is simply not true at all. St Patrick prophecied the fire would ignite once again starting in the North of Ireland, and spread all over the country. Ireland will be the Land of Saints and Scholars once again. Happy St Patrick's Day ☘️

I ask:. Have you ever read the real Biogaphy of St. Patrick? 1rst he was not Irish, he was British. His GrandFather & Father were EVANGELISTS. Not Roman Catholics. _When he managed to Escape his Irish Kidnappers, he returned to England and also became an Evangelist. _Then he decided to return to Ireland and Evangelize that Celtic Human Sacrificing nation. _As always the Roman Catholics took advantage of his Fame & incorporated late Patrick, by giving him the 'Saint' title. Like Joan of Ark, they Burned her Alive, then made her a Saint! ✓ Salvation & Eternal Life is found ONLY by having Faith on The Christ of Nazareth; with Repentance and Adult Baptism in Living Waters!

My mother was a Dub, she noticed the rapid decline in the church in Ireland and the U.S. many years ago, she said that eventually the church will end up in the home, she passed is 2016, I think what she said is quickly coming into fruition. It's encouraging to listen to the young people who are believers. Praise to you lord Jesus Christ.

I'm 55 years old and to be honest the church has been in decline all my life I remember in the 1970's my parents saying about young people leaving the church the decline went from a gradual thing back then and in the 80's to a bigger exodus in the 90's after the abuse scandals but the meadia have always had a mission to get religion gone not just in Ireland but all over the world. Hopefully the decline has peaked or soon will and more young people and adults alike will see the merits of this good and compationate religion.

Jesus said, "I tell you the truth no one will see the kingdom of God unless he is born again. I am the way the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father except through me." For God so loved the world that He give His only Son that whoever believes in Him will not perish but will have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world but to save the World through Him. For all have sinned and come short of the Glory of God. For the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord, and All who call upon the name of the Lord will be saved. " If you want to be sure of Heaven and avoid the other place below say the following prayer sincerely from your heart." Lord Jesus I repent and am sorry for my sins forgive me. I wonder what those young people believe. Do they believe that you need to let nature or God have its way and give 10 or 12 or 15 kids? Do they believe you have to stay with an abusive spouse, or live your life alone if you leave? Do they believe you can trust a priest with their kids? Do they think gay people have to live alone and celibate? Do they believe you have to submit to the church?

Faith is associated with what we believe or disbelieve in. It's important to understand that when a person says: I believe in or disbelieve in ; ALL they are doing is making a statement about themselves, based on their whole experience of growing up. We cannot believe for somebody else. While people are entitled to believe in whatever they want to: they are NOT entitled to make it a LAW for others. One of the reasons that so many people criticise people and institutions around then is that: it gives them some sort of pseudo justification for their own actions - it makes them feel better in themselves.

Clergy seem to contradict themselves or they are brain washed. They state,the young people still have the faith,but admit they don't go to Mass or attend Church. How can you belong to a church if you don't attend their Mass and believe Bread changes into God. They are kidding themselves oh yes the Catholic Church has all these great rules Mass ,Bread into God, tell a man your sins.only a man,women can't be priests. Have they not realized very few people believe these outdated customs. Children receive communion ,but its only because their parents want to dress them up as miniature models for the day. They get Communion and Mass once,and that's an end of it. You wint see them agsin till thrir wedding day in an outfit costing thousands.its a fashion show. Next appearance Baptism with a huge knees up afterwards. You don't believe me,well put it to the test,tell the children and the parents they can only make their first communion in an everyday dress or a school uniform,and see how many will turn up for it. Don't make too many sandwiches,I'd say about two would do in each parish.

One truth in particular: the Church requires, ABOVE ALL ELSE, emphasis on the vertical relationship between God and man. The unique mission of the Church is to make manifest a Reality that transcends this world. The horizontal relationship between man and man follows naturally from the vertical one but can never, ever be a substitute. (The modern liturgy, of course, does all it can to disrupt vertical reverence and keep priest and congregation in a position of worshipping each other. )

Everyone needs to read the Bible for themselves. The Bible is the Word of God. Jesus is the Way the Truth and the Life nobody comes to the Father except through Him. Not through Mary, the saints, or the Roman Catholic Church. Jesus condemned religious leaders calling them vipers and sons of Satan. People need to follow the Apostles not the popes who have claimed to be God. When Jesus asked his Apostles who do they thinks He is, Peter answered correctly saying you are the so of God. Jesus said to Peter this was revealed to you from God the Father and upon this rock I will build my Church. That means the revealed identity of Jesus Christ is the Rock not Peter. Jesus is referred to as the Rock and the corner stone that was rejected. Peter was NEVER referred to as the Rock. Peters name means stone from the Greek Petros. The popes of old have claimed to be God. The Roman Catholic Church claim the right to change the ten commandments and the Sabbath Day. The Bible tells you to get out of her that changes God's Laws and Times. Read it for yourself to know the truth. Satan has infiltrated the True Church of Jesus Christ. This pope Francis is preaching a heretical Gosple. Time to know the true Gospel, it's contained in the King James Bible. The Holy Ghost will guide you when you read it searching ernestly for the Truth. The scriptures interpret the scriptures. The Old Testament prophesied the birth, life, ministry, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ and the New Testament fulfilled all of these prophecies exactly as prophesied. That's all you need to know. Jesus is the only way to the Father. The Catholic Church prays to Mary Queen of heaven. A pagan goddess, Maranatha.

There is a small remnant in Ireland who remain deeply Catholic. I am one of them. God is moving in those lives in a powerful way. Jesus said, for where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” A fire has been started in Ireland, a hope that has sprung up and ignited by faith and love for the true Catholic faith and supported by the Divine Mercy Conferenc in Dublin 2023.The message of Knock was and is an apocayptic message for the end times which we are living. Our Lady promised at Fatima,in the end my immaculate heart will triumph and so we live in great expectation and hope for the re-conversion of Ireland which will happen.

I agree, I think our generation is differentiating between the modern culture of the Church and its true origins. This mentality we think of as “Catholic” largely has origins in the 1950’s (& earlier into the Victorian era); I’ve noticed young believers tend to start with an interest in the much earlier history. Young people are increasingly interested in classical studies (albeit from a secular lens) and this eventually ties into Christianization of Europe by the end of the Roman Empire - this resurrects a fresh intrigue. In many ways I think young believers relate to the sentiment of building anew among the ruins of the old world, with little support, on faith alone embarking into foreign territory. We see that the Church has undergone change whilst keeping its doctrine and traditions, it has survived scandal and corruption, it can and will again. We have witnessed the failing of protestantism and this renews our trust in the ancient tradition. This may be for the good, to weed out those who remain for the sake of culture alone and not faith. This new generation entering the clergy (though few) cannot possibly be motivated by authority, because there is none any longer to be gained. The new generation is also vulnerable, susceptible to addictions and increasingly fed up with their meaningless, sinful society that profits off their vices. We’re sick of the excess, we now again crave piety. This is why the new Church will likely be comprised of converts - in the footsteps of Paul. This old Catholicism is dead, its true - but I believe there is hope and I have seen it.

They might get their kids baptized, but they aren't raising them with much religion - very few kids are brought to mass these days. Im a Londoner born and bred. My dad was Indian and my mum was Ethiopan. Paki is a British term made up by British and Irish Catholics in the 1950's. The British and Irish Catholics used it as a way to take the piss out of the strange accent and strange facial features of the newly arrived Pakistanis and Indians into Britain and LATER Ireland. In a similiar fashion, the British and American Protestants made up the word NIGGER in the 1920's in Britiain and America - whilst British and Irish catholics made up the word Paki in the 1950's in Britain and LATER Ireland. NIGGER came from the word NEGRO in Britain and America during the 1800's and was made up by British and American Protestants as a way of degrading the facial features and strange accent of Blacks. PAKI came from the word PAKISTANI in the 1950's in Britain and LATER Ireland and was made up by the British and Irish Catholics as a way of degrading the facial features and strange accent of south Asians. But The Catholics and the Protestants were NOT cruel to people purely on the basis of skin complexion. Here is the proof........... Irish Catholics loved Blacks - but hated Indians. On the other hand, American and British Protestants hated Blacks - but loved Indians. This proves that neither the Irish Catholics OR the British /American Protestants were ever racist to people on the basis of skin colour. These certain prejudices simply arose on the basis of certain cultural clashes in the communities combined with differences in the phenotypical facial structures of the various individuals in question which made people feel uneasy. It was NOT (and never) based on skin complexion as NONE of the White Celtic peoples in Britain were ever racist to people purely on the basis of the colour of their skin.

Raising the profile of our Catholic church within the town this winter through the 'Warm Space' project, in particular, was a great success. We have formed close bonds with many new people, a number of which are now regular visitors to our Lenten lunches and various social gatherings. Many young people are drawn to the Traditional Latin Mass due to its beauty and reverence, you'll find that many of the young families you see attending Mass in multitudes are in fact to Latin Masses and not to the Novus Ordo. Whilst Novus Ordo attendance diminishes, Traditional Latin Mass rises.

I’ve met more Catholic Irishmen in a Knights of Columbus event than my 10+ days touring the Republic in 2016 when I was in high school. It’s horrific what the culture, foreign and domestic, did to the country. I wasn’t expecting much, but it was worse than I expected. Friends say it has gotten worse. I believe American Catholics are spearheading the traditional Catholic revival in the developed world, as we have had this problem longer, and religious freedom makes it easier to know whether someone is real or “cultural”. The “Great Awakening: Catholic Edition” if you will. Groups like this exist in many citifies. I’m relieved to see groups of young Irish are also forming these groups. I am blessed enough to have found one in Upstate New York, though later than I wish. They are very hard to find, but cannot be un-found. We think this Christian way of living is dead, but God provides. I wish more people knew. May God save the island.

One priest has spoken truth, said church was slow responding to sexual abuse. But I think its people use their brains nowadays.. I was reared Catholic.but when I was about 12 and got sense I realized that Gods were a figment of peoples imagination. No proof of Gods, Fairies , ghosts, moving statues etc. So why believe in anything,we really were brain washed,no need for any religion, it has caused nothing but trouble over the centuries. One sect murdering the other all asserting their power, You can do no wrong if you live by the truth. " Do as you would be done by" treat everyone Human and animal as you would wish others would treat you. No promises of rewards in another imaginary world. Just do good for its own sake. I am an Atheist,best decision I ever made. I know we are hated by the religious, but what can you expect.

I have been told that Catholicism is a strong cultural identification rather than a theological one. I saw a survey that said 24% of Irish Catholics who attend mass regularly do not believe in God. The famous line when a priest met an Irish atheist. “Are you a Catholic atheist or a Protestant atheist “.

That the youth are the ones on fire is promising. Their love for our Lord and their fire can ignite anything. Their faith is beautiful. Having Irish in me, it breaks my heart to hear they went from 90%+ down to only 30%. Human fraility (the priest abuse issues) I feel is one of the excuses for people to not bother with church because there' more important things going ... really. WHATS MORE IMPORTANT THAN GOD. NOTHING. I'm in the US and go to church almost daily, and I see 15-20 people, a little more over the 100+ the chapel can hold and feel sad that other Catholics feel they don't have to attend, other than Easter & Christmas. I try not to judge. I'm only 2 years new to being Catholic in my 62 years. When I first walked into my Catholic cathedral, I was awed by the architecture, then stayed for mass - and not knowing then Who IS at that altar, I cried the entire mass. My heart knew my Lord was there, while my head was like 'wha...'. But He had me - I was hooked. Christ kept me in that cathedral long enough to see my first mass, and I could feel Him without understanding then He was calling me back home. I grew up mormon, yet stopped going to church by the time I was 17 and had been without a church basis from then to my 60th year. Working with a Catholic got me talking with her, and realizing I needed God back in my life. I'd never given up on my Lord Jesus. Since a child I've always been sadden how He died. Whenever I heard He was crucified, I'd cry - He' always been in my heart. Becoming Catholic just made me realize I loved Him more than I'd thought. Praise be to God! I came into the church during covid and the shutdowns. Luckily, the cathedral here remained opened, though again it was sad not seeing many attend mass, save Sunday when it'd fill big time. I understand having a job, but I worked my work around mass, not the other way. I know I need Him more than a job, than I'm thankful for a job. I started a new one, which God be praised, worked with me on having Sundays off first & foremost, no discussion to it. Then eventually getting a 4-hour night shift, so I can attend Mass in the morning. It's great! For Adoration, oh my goodness, such a precious gift from God. I cry going home from adoration, realizing THAT is what people in their hectic lives crave, but they've no clue it exists. They're cut off from God. The Father is right, without God in your life, there is no life... just a lost drudgery of nothingness (satan' world, not God). Human hearts want Christ, want God, but they're blinded by this world of evil and lies to think 'stuff' fills it. It does not. Only God can fill you. Come home, please.. I'm praying for you.

All the years I worked with the Irish in Ireland and the US, I don't remember meeting one who didn't have a hostility to the Catholic Church. They never told me the reasons why they hated the Church, but I have my guesses as to why. The Catholic Church will need to make drastic changes if they are to win back Ireland for the Lord and not simply trying to increase attendance at Sunday Mass.

I think a lot of people had a general resentment at the social and sometimes legal rules that were imposed on us by a the church. I'd also add the tedium of it all - this was always a source of laughter as kids. However, the emergence of the abuse scandals in the 1990s triggered a rage in lots of people. The cruelty and hypocrisy of it broke the connection for many.

Love the honesty of these young laddies...no watered down faith! That is a major problem. I know enough to seek out other sources who will give me what I need. If my parish or local parishes are watering everything down then I search the world over to find those that will. I would prefer to go to Mass in person ,but if the in person options are luke warm and these seem non denominational then I will search the internet to find the sources that speak to true Catholicism. I want to tell these faithful devotees who are searching use social media and your devices to search out the good news, God wants to send you...the new disciples to the ends of the earth to evangelize to those who need it.

It's so sad in Ireland so many people are losing their faith because of circumstances. Irish Columban missionaries have been in my country for many decades and added in strengthening our faith. Regarding Fr. Pj during the height of the covid pandemic we also have a hard lockdown but our church decided by the bishops to follow the government's instructions to suspend mass for many months anyway there were a lot of online masses so many people were dying and getting sick and we all understood the precautions.

The Catholic church teaches that's it's a mortal sin to miss Mass on Sunday so who's responsible for the mortal sin when the clergy closed the churches.
@granmabern5283
@granmabern5283 Жыл бұрын
It’s not a mortal sin when you have a serious reason not to go. If you are sick, you cannot go. Not a sin. If the Church is closed, you cannot go. Not a sin. If there is a twig storm you cannot go. If your kids are sick, you cannot go. If you are too far away from the Church, through no fault of your own, and cannot travel, ( an hour or more) it’s not a sin. If those who took the decision to close it, did so in good faith for a grave reason, there is no sin. All of us are obliged to sanctify Sunday by honouring God . The Holy Mass is the preferred, best, and usual way to honour God on Sunday. If we cannot go to Mass, we must spend at the very least one hour in prayer, and also treat the whole day as the Lord’s Day, a day of prayer, a day of rest, a day of extra holiness. You can look up answers to worries like this, online, from the Catholic Catechism, or videos like Ascension Presents, or EWTN, or SSPX.
