The Israel Adesanya story has been a testament to just how much a fighter can do for themselves in a short space of time.
It has been about five and a half years since we first witnessed Izzy make a walk to the octagon - and in that time, he became UFC champion, then the first ever two-time champion, made an attempt at champ-champ status, became probably the biggest new star in the promotion for a while, and racked up five defense of his belt.
And sure, this ongoing run of form has seen his consistency drop dramatically - but all in all, I would argue that Adesanya has had a career well worth being proud of.
It’s not a perfect career - nor is it enough to open any form of conversation about him as the middleweight G.O.A.T over Anderson Silva - but still, it’s a very impressive 16 fight stretch.
However, losing his title to Sean Strickland was a setback that appears to have really hurt Adesanya’s brand in more ways than one.

@@rico14 it's really hard to know the difference between Narcissism and a big Ego but there's definitely a difference it reminds me of one the UFC media day questions thing, and Izzy was like "they try so hard to put me in a box to define me but I'm completely outside of it" trying so hard to say his beliefs and personality so other-worldly that he's not even in a box and he has no ideology, which was not just completely narcissistic but stupid because everybody believe in certain things and fall within a box, he didn't understand that what he said basically means "I have no real beliefs"

It seems like Izzy has severe “Main Character Syndrome.” Like he’s the pinnacle of the human species and everyone else is kinda just here as pawns. It honestly feels like he thinks that he has the power to will certain things into existence just for the simple fact that he believes it will happen. He’s also often kinda dismissal of any critique (like people noticing his style has gotten a bit more boring), and tries way too hard to seem cool and quirky. Add that to the weird race baiting, and his stuff with his dog, and it feels like Izzy needs a lot of time away from the lime light and probably the sport in general tbh. Maybe just some time to self reflect, maybe fix some things in general, and stop focusing on garnering attention and looking for the next sound bite to go on a KZbin compilation.

Always liked Izzy. He tries hard to spin the narrative around him like he knows something we don't. About life, about the future, about his fights and his opponents. I know he does that. But that doesn't make him a bad human being by any means. I've admired his loyalty to his teammates and then way he carries himself around the gym. Behind the whole fighter personality, I sense that he is genuine and kind. Some of his fights have been low-key lackluster but his whole UFC run has been amazing so far.

As an izzy fan, yes the contreversy is there, yes the boring fights took place during his title reign, and sean beat him. Now I think izzy needs to become that 2019 izzy that was coming onto the scene and working his way upto a title with exciting performances. I say do izzy vs khamzat as a title eliminator. If he loses, then shit hes a very solid gatekeeper into the top 5 and I will still be a massive fan.

I always liked Izzy's presence. All the way up to the last Pereira fight. He was cringe asf, acting like a petty teenager on the world stage. But it was entertaining. i still rate Anderson Silva higher and the middleweight GOAT, but in fairness, he probably salvaged a lot of his legacy by getting his leg broken. If he had legitimately lost the fight against Weidman, i think we might be reviewing his career a bit differently *edit* and fight #1 was considered a "fluke" because he got clipped while showing off

His fans will still back him. He's had a 5 fight run of mid fights and still mostly got support alongside the criticism throughout it. His star power obviously plateaud, but he has enough love from his own fanbase and respect in the community that it won't matter that he's not as exciting as he was on his come up. And he was out talked by Costa, Brunson and Poatan at press conference before Sean came along, it's known he's bad on the mic at shouting back and forth. The only people that put much stock in the Strickland build up were people that dislike Izzy who wanted Strickland to shit on him at a press conference and a minority that actually like Sean. It's not that deep.

I think Izzy is annoying. Good to watch in the fights but annoying, cringe and tries way too hard to sound like an anime character. I get it that's his thing...but it's cringe. The dancing etc. The post fight celebrationa etc. All of it is annoying. I can see what you are saying. He's awful in interviews. So much so it throws off the interviewer. They are like "what did he just say". Like the meme. I'm Australian and should be a fan but I don't like the guy. He is unlikable and always was. I use to say to all my fight friends that I think he's a tool. Good fighter but wouldn't wanna be friends with the guy. He's trying to be so intense and it's just not in him. He's not intense he's cringe to a degree it hurts me to watch him do interviews. I'm always like "ohhh dude this guy is trying way too hard.".
