Those chemical weapons, those aircraft that went on bombing raids, those conventional weapon stockpiles, those naval harbors with warships: all these things contributed to murder, maim, repress and terrorize Syrian civilians for the last forty years. In the wrong hands, these weapons could terrorize Syrians and folks in the Middle East again. The situation is still very turbulent, as evidenced by videos. Many extremist groups vie for power right now. Taking over an airfield or a chemical weapons depot could give one radical extremist group an edge over the others. Why did russia think they could keep their navel base at Tartus and why didn’t the rebels seize or loot it? What kind of “deal” did RU make and with who? What’s going on with Kheimim Air Base? Better to have Israel bomb these important sites than have russia make some sneaky backroom deal to keep them operating to funnel arms and troops to Africa.
@ToqaTaha-pv8dwКүн бұрын
I want whatever it is you're drinking mate
@mnxsКүн бұрын
You make good points in the first paragraph, but I think you're off in the second. I think the rebels haven't stormed the Russia bases not because they don't want to, but because they'd likely face an altogether different form of resistance, as in soldiers that just might be much better trained and equipped than the Syrian Army, and who'd have a lot of reason to fear being captured (infidel enemy foreigners, in the eyes of the rebels). But perhaps more importantly, I think the rebel leaders realise that they have much more on their plates, and bigger fish to fry, than some scared Russians holed up in their bases. Right now, they likely prefer to have some limited detachments monitor the Russians, while the majority of their forces can be redirected to more urgent matters - like helping restore peace, security and availability of basic necessities for ordinary Syrians. I also think this is essentially why the rebels seems to have not objected to or done much about the Israeli strikes and incursions; they are stretched thin and want to prioritise elsewhere. So in short, I don't think there's reason to believe the rebels have struck any sort of shady, backroom deals with the Russians, per se - not yet, at least. I think we on the outside tend to focus too much on the larger geopolitical picture, as the situation on the ground is not personal to us; but for the Syrians, the reality is that their country is absolutely devastated and in ruins, with innumerable hordes of people that lack even the most basic things, and are at risk of all sorts of humanitarian disasters. Not to mention the need to solidify power, broker deals with other factions, ensure the continuation and reform of state institutions... and so much more. There's a heck of a lot for them to do, and the current state of unease and mistrust in their goals from the wider world means that we are slow in stepping up with assistance. Lastly, you're mistaken that Israel is bombing Russian bases; I assure you they are not - the Russians would have an absolute flip, and that's a pile of dung the Israelis are _not_ interested in. It'd be a legitimate _casus belli_ (cause for war), and unlike the Syrians, the Russians, while weakened, are in a _much_ better position to retaliate. So, the Israelis are only targeting assets of the former Syrian regime.

1. Israel has now formally and permanently occupied the Golan Heights. And has now ALSO 'temporarily occupied' the area BEYOND the Golan Heights. 2. Add to that the entire South of the Litani River in Lebanon now occupied (permanently) by Israel when they pushed Hezbollah out. _I don't blame Israel (any country in its place would do EXACTLY the same thing). BUT it has increased the size of its country by about 20% over the past 3 months._

This might be the plan. Israel is kinda done. Palestine has international recognition and a seat at the table, Netanyahu is on trial for corruption and has a permanent warrant for war crimes. The most telling is the demographic change. 1/3rd of Israel and most of its businesses have fled the country. And most of those expats say they will never return because Israel's standing in the world is over. Israel blowing random people up doesn't mean it's winning a war. It just means the US is buying it tons of guns. The US is not buying it people, land, or peace. Israel can't even uphold its own ceasefires with Hezbollah. There's no one in charge there anymore, it's a blind panic. 😐 Edit: to put it bluntly, people thought Israel was the France of the Middle East and they're learning it's actually the 90's eta Rwanda of the Middle East and that's never, ever going away. Just ask 2024 Rwanda.

Omg, Netanyahu only used the word 'temporary' in the English version for this current occupation, but not in the Hebrew version. That is sneaky as.

The new Syrian regime is very anti Israeli, and can’t be trusted not to sell Syria’s military weapons to Hezbollah (paid for by Iran), which would use them against Israel at a later date. That’s why Israel is trying to destroy them.
