Great video as always Pete. I drive a 66 plate Mercedes Citan which is euro 5, but because of it's age it still complies with the London ULEZ and all the other clean air zones. So I charge the fee as I say I'm in a Euro 5 and just take it for now as a lucky bonus You can you an online tool to check your Reg Number to see if it complies.

I crunched the numbers and, given my usage (courier work is a side job to my main trade especially since the pandemic), decided not to bother changing to a Euro 6, at this time. I'm running a half decent 2012 xlwb Sprinter with just over 100,000 miles on. There's a premium on anything Euro 6 and anything that was afordable had done 200k+. I estimated that even if I entered the zone frequently I would only be spending an extra £2-3k a year, most of which would be recouped from the customers. My hope is as time goes on and more big companies move on to electric vehicles the premium on ULEZ compliant vans will deminish and I'll upgrade when my current van starts to cost me more in repairs.

@@godzillas6301 I know. I was brought up on old Stallone films and that film lock up inspired me to make number plates. So when I landed in prison the first time. I couldn't believe there was no such thing as making number plates in prison. So I had to try again when I got out and again and again. I been inside a few establishments in UK and not one of them made number plates. What I found weird when I started living the legal ish life. Bearing in mind most of my criminal past was driving without a licence. But I found out you don't need a license to buy a car or van. But you need a driving license and a log book to buy a number plate

There are some good deals for euro 5 vans now as owners and companies are selling. I got a decent sprinter luton for £5k .. ill pay the £8 a day clean air zone price and add it onto the quote. Pete is right in this vid. Unless you got a contract inside the zones, don't bother with euro 6

One big considering is there's only going to be more and more zones popping up. As far as vans are concerned I think they changed from euro 5 to euro 6 and a 16 plate. I'm no moneybags but my next will be newer than a 16 plate so it's euro 6 for me.

Hi Pete, there's definitely an argument for buying euro 6 when it comes to trucks, if you where to go into London say more than 3 times a week that's an extra £300 for a euro 5 truck over a euro 6, and over the course of an average month it could be an extra £1200, this cost would easily finance the cost of buying a newer euro 6 truck, this also works if your going into the other CAZ zones regularly round the country, it won't be long before your regularly forking out £200 per week for these zones in a truck, the cost of the low emission zones will start out way the cost of investing in newer trucks sadly. Having said that when it comes to van's it's a different story because of the crazy difference in the cost of the charging in the low emission zones, just look at London for instance, my euro 5 truck is a £100 per day and my old euro 4 curtainsider van is only £12.50 per day, it's down to the numbers at the end of the day mate.....
@BKarol3 жыл бұрын
Differnce between euro 5 and 6 is a lot less then 10k now. If you're buying a euro 5 thats at least 7 years old and 150-200k miles, so expect to spend money keeping it on the road as everything will need replacing soon. Our fleet is half euro 5 and half euro 6, we'll be replacing euro 5 this year with euro 6 not because we drive in low emisson zone but because that's all you can get now (new or coupe years old)
@paddymcgirr51393 жыл бұрын
Also take in to count resale value, because a euro 5 and a euro 6 with the same mileage the euro 6 will always be worth more and more desirable, plus I just bloody brought a merc sprinter luton,which I've had converted to a single curtainsider, with a night heater😊total investment 21k so far......

Contract-hire may be better than leasing as it is 100% deductible and off the balance sheet. Either way; financing a vehicle you won’t end up owning means you are paying the leasing company’s depreciation AND interest on top. Tread carefully.

Personally I would go for Euro 6 because I would charge the customer the zone fee and keep it for myself. And with time more places will have zones where you have to pay and also when you decide to sell your Euro six vehicle it would be worth more than a Euro 5 and more desirable

A couple issues with what you're saying. Euro 6 vans aren't double the price of Euro 5 vans. I paid £11k for my 2nd hand Euro6 MWB van and i paid £8k for my Euro5 Small Van. Also the new zones don't send a letter and new ones don't have an auto pay option. If you don't pay on the day the only letter you get is the PCN. Zones are unmarked or poorly marked and therefore you don't even know if you've gone it or not. Also road tax on higher emission vehicles ie, Euro5 will only be go up. If you aren't super organised, once you get a few fines for the various zones PCNs you've easily spent more then having a Euro6 and taking the extra stress out of the driving.

Even if the charges are passed on - it is revenue which the euro 5 driver could have had as income if they’d bought a euro 6. I have a customer in Nw10 with goods going to Birmingham caz zone - there is only so much which can be passed on. Either shippers buy more euro 6 vans so less work goes onto Cx or customers buy euro 6 vans etc / higher prices reduce volume of jobs regardless on Cx.

Im going to turn this on its head a bit Many of you are running at impossibly low rates £1 a mile for a LWB was what we were charging in 1992 !!!!!!!!!!. I would suggest a much older van with lower miles and in good condition for a low as you can find ie 10 or 11 plate and budget for £300 a month for maintance
@godzillas63013 жыл бұрын
I dont see it this way . Its too simplistic to seek to add on the cost to a customer or seek to take it on the chin . There is the every day quotes to consider or to seek to add it on or run at a loss on certain jobs .... neither will go down with the customer and will certainly NOT make you competative in the work place unless you are happy to run at cost ................... ouch . Distance jobs absorb the cost easier than local jobs but thats not helpfull over all given distance doesnt pay as well . We could be faced with higher competition for the jobs not within zones but this has a finite time frame . As everywhere with a ring road falls to this bullshit the world will change and the courier with the euro 6 becomes `the price` . Those who seek to cover the fines .......... they are not charges only fines ................ price themseleves out of the market leaving those with euro 5 unable to get work due to the excessive cost . That 40 quid for across town now become 50 and the shippers wont pay it as the euro 6 under cut . However the euro 6 under cut euro 5 but with an excess of costs . That 15+ grand van didnt buy itself and there the attempt to recoupe the excessive outlay with higher quotes ........ that wont work as most will stick with an amount of the quid a mile regardless of what the 15 plate van cost . SHITTTTTTTTTTTTTT ............... There isnt a cheap euro 6 to be had , that leaves the courier industry in a right mess . But this will be getting worse and worse until people are faced with either euro 6 or nothing . Greater machester is just too big an area to ignore ....... every ring road brings an ability to charge to suckers . B/ham will at some point fall to the M42/m5/m6 in totality . That prick in london has already created this ability and its a matter of time before the m25 is a the zone and complete countys are considered .
