I remember when I first started waiting tables, I thought everyone called all sodas cokes and would ask customers what kind. If they were from the south they would specify, if not they would get really confused lol

I always thought that when you wanted to order a soda pop at a restaurant, you would tell your server what kind. Like you wanted a Dr. Pepper, you ask for a Dr. Pepper.

Even before I was born, my family had always called the remote, “the conch” because of Lord of the Flies. So whoever got to pick the show was “the keeper of the conch”. I didn’t know that nobody else has ever called it a “conch” until I was 15 and read the book in school.

I was raised by my grandparents, and they always called the remote “the tv tuner”. It makes sense when you think about it, but I remember getting some quizzical looks from other kids my age when I asked them to pass me the tv tuner.

Growing up in California: at my grandparents house it was “the clicker” (makes sense now because my grandpa is from Connecticut) but otherwise it was “the remote”; lollipop; fireflies or lightning bugs depending on where we were visiting; a sandwich 🤷🏼‍♀️; tennis shoes; pancakes; drinking fountain; oh and soda 🥤

Connecticut ... NEVER called it ... " the clicker" ... we called it the remote - which my mother would glue to the front of the tv - so " the kids wouldn't lose it " otherwise it was ... lolipop, fire-flies, " sneakers ", pancakes, soda, ' sandwich ' was never said but implied - "can I have a ham & cheese?" ... "can I have a turkey with lettuce & tomato?"

Central KY. As a kid, we all called carbonated drinks "cokes" no matter what it was. Caused no problems at all because we just then specified.

Only people in the Milwaukee area say bubbler, I don't even live that far from Milwaukee and I've always said drinking fountain. Everyone around me always said that or water fountain

Cincinnatian here. Pop was what we always used. I started using soda when I went to college and had a roommate from Wisconsin who used soda, with the accent we all know and love.

Does anyone remember when to see what was on all the channels , it was its own channel and it was a rolling guide? You had to wait for 3 or 4 min to find put what was in the channel you wanted to watch.

Yes. Our local newspaper came with a TV paper in it once a week that you could look up what channel and times shows were on though.

I grew up in southern Virginia and went to a summer camp in Minnesota. It was like a new language because they said "oot and aboot", bubbler, pop, etc. It was really funny to my 15 year old self.

You must have been near the Canadian border. Canadians say 'oot and aboot" and people from WI say bubbler. Minnesotans do say pop though. Well, some. The younger ones are being influenced by ones who say soda.

My cousins from Cleveland and I would have epic battles over calling it soda or pop. My brother and I always referred to it as soda in Pennsylvania. Though I think people in Pittsburgh also call it pop, but soda is definitely the superior choice.

It’s definitely not the superior choice, soda means anything with carbonation whereas pop is a specific range of carbonated drinks. Do you think “vodka soda” means vodka mixed with soda pop?

My first job as a teen was rounding up carts at the store. An old guy asked me to get him a carriage. I was confused for a minute. He meant a shopping cart 🤣

My mamaw had cable with the number slider box. I loved using that thing! We got a box with a bunch of buttons on it when we got cable. Then they "upgraded" us to a remote version and my dad claimed it as his. When they would go to the store I got to hold the remote and it was an exciting time.

Being from Wisconsin, everyone at my elementary/middle school called the water fountain a bubbler! My friend always called a remote “the buttons” which makes sense 🤷🏻‍♀️ To this day I refer to any athletic shoe as tennis shoes!

We called them either "gym shoes" or "running shoes" and that was based on the tread. Smoother bottomed shoes were for the gym, while shoes with pronounced tread were called running shoes, since they were for outdoors type of sports and running. Sneakers works better for more casual not sporty shoes, atleast in my mind

Trainers is more UK in my experience. They use that word as a catch all. I live near Toronto and it’s always been running shoes, basketball shoes, gym shoes, or more rarely sneakers. I feel like we’re more specific in Canada lol like we even say skate(board) shoes. 🤷🏻 🇨🇦

I moved to Rhode Island when I was sixteen, the first day of school someone said something about the bubbler(bubblah, in RI speak) and I was completely befuddled. They also call milkshakes "cabinets".

I definitely remember the slider channel selector for the first cable system, but does anyone recall how originally we had to “switch” the tv from channel A to channel B to watch local stations or “cable” stations? It was such a pain.
