How Farms Work by Ryan Kuster is a KZbin channel based in rural Potosi, Wisconsin.
Our mission is to teach those who didn't grow up on a farm what the farming life is like.
These videos show the Kuster family working together raising cattle and crops. We believe everyone who wants to know more about farming should be able to share the farming experience with us and we look to educate the world on many essential agriculture topics.
How Farms Work takes place on ~1,100 acres with around 75-200 cattle at any given time. Four John Deere tractors are currently used on the farm, which are a 4020, 4640, 7600, and 8235R.

I remember riding with my Dad one day in his old IH 5488 pulling a subsoiler. We was going across a field and one of the shanks caught an old propane tank that was buried sometime in the past. The shanks didn't have sheer bolts, so the front tires of the tractor came off the ground before my Dad was able to hit the clutch. LoL My greatest memories as a kid came from time spent farming. RIP Dad

They work well. I have a pair of 16 Shank Unverferth subsoilers on took caddies. We played the 3pt game for years with 8 shank tools but find the caddies to be much more agile. These save our skin on rented ground that’s not tiled.

Use shank tips with the wings on them, they lift and shatter the ground better. And only rip when the ground is dry.

It was interesting to see the soil lift up between the shanks. I've seen one of these turn up big chunks in dry soil. If I was going to buy one this is the size I would get because you don't spend a lot of money on a ripper you only use every other year and on high compaction areas. Seems like the best way to go is buy one and rent it out when your not using it. My Grandpa bought a lot of land he never set foot on, just cash rented it.

The common practice with those implements here in NC 10 years or so ago was to run the zone builders with the berm tucker attachments at a shallow angle to the crop rows in the late winter, early spring, then no-till plant over that. This is in sandy soils. Now, you still see a little of that practice, but most have either changed to full no till, or strip till.

When you put fwa in, put it in the actual button that shows it not auto. Auto sometimes may not work in the field. We have gotten a cart stuck doing this

I would run that implement on every acre you have! Once it gets dry. Shattering that hard pan will benefit you next season.

I snagged a natural gas line once, it was only 8" deep where I caught it. Gas company tried billing us for the gas lost, until we pushed back and reminded them it's their responsibility to maintain depth for natural farming practices...it pays to know your rights

Will you have it till spring?Ryan looked a bit wet to me in a couple spots but maybe up on the hills you can go.i think the 82 had its pants full with that subdoiler.u used a 7 shank on a 94 John deere gour wheeler had it was running deeper than you are and it was maxed out in horsepower on that one.you guys had things better thrn in north Dakota farmers fid this year eith weather

From what I've seen with our neighbour a lot depend on type of point, depth, number of legs and spacing. Biggest trouble around here is trying to get it to break down into a fine seedbed. They used to use a Simba subsoiler on an 8something John Deere now though they use a 3 metre Sumo Trio one pass cultivator

That subsoiler, is it as effective as say a mole board plow? I am not that familiar with this kind of equipment. It just looks like it slices through the ground and doesn't disturb the soil that much?

Have you ever probed with a compaction tester to see how deep and bad the compaction is, could bed as deep as 48” or 10. It’s how you determine the proper use of a subsoiling machine.

Those shanks look like they are semi-parabolic I was told by Great Plains Mfg that their online subsoiler shanks require 50 horse power per shank. We used to try and run our old V rippers when it was dry even with it being a v ripper you got better lateral shatter though it was not true verticle tillage

This is the exact subsoiler that I want! Disc coulters, straight shanks and wheels for depth control. I am struggling to get a decent subsoiler in Europe (if anyone knows a brand which makes subsoilers like this, please comment).

Probably not enough time conditions dont allow it and this time of year they are harvesting then chopping corn stalks baling as much as possible then cultivation as much as possible without worrying about planting a crop and or it's not in there budget cover crops are expensive to plant

@Hot Hippo, Depends on where you are in Europe, but i think Evers Agro (NL) could build the subsoiler you’re looking for. Or look for a grassland subsoiler.

However, sometimes I wish youd go more into "How farms work" - why are you using a subsoiler as opposed to a cultivator, or discs, a moldboard plow or chisel plow? what are the benefits of using this thing? Is it just to loosen compacted areas? Why is this useful, if, when you go in next year you will compact the same areas again (because you arent changing field entrances?). Thanks!

I subsoiler breaks up the hard pan twelve to eighteen inches down a cultivator rarely goes deeper then six inches.

Ryan, is that machine suppose to break the ground? I was under the impression it was there too just slice the ground so it could air out and let the frost break it up. I don't see anything on those shanks that would do any real stirring action.

My understanding of the primary purpose of a deep ripper like this is to lift and shatter hard pan, usually that forms 1-2 feet below the surface. It's designed to disturb as little soil and residue on the surface as possible.

We have a 3 shanked subsoiler that we pull with our 856 and it only has 115 horsepower and whatdoes that have 255 300 and u cant pull that very well

Robert Reznik years and years ago. That’s a sub soiled. So it only breaks up the ground underneath without disturbing the top soil. Me n my stepdad have a 5 band deep chisel plow that turns over everything from where your ripping. That was a good 10 years ago. Old old invention
