Exactly. I’ve been in plenty of discussions about how Animals has long been the PF album that needed a remix the most. It hit that line between being a nice HiFi sounding record and just missing the mark mix-wise.

From this remix, i concluded that; 1. Rick deserves much more recognition on this album 2. David deserves more recognition as a skilled bass player 3. Nick deserves SO much more recognition as a drummer in general 4. Roger's artistic vision in 1977 was muffled by the original production

My major problem with most of the current makeovers is that they don't sound like products of their time any more. But the clarity is undeniable. This does apply more to The Beatles and others 60s' remasters/remixes.

Yeah it sounds nice and clear but the album originally had a more murky sound and feel. I think I prefer the original mostly because its the version I have always known and loved. It sounds a bit too modern and clean for me. Though I dont hate it but I probably wont be getting it or having it as a go to source. But if those who bought it enjoy it, more power to them.

@@TheEWFX29 I've seen this pointed out in another videos comment section before, the original Animals mix was never on par with other Floyd albums due to it having been recorded in a different, limited studio. So if anything, this new mix was the mix Animals always deserved that the other Floyd albums got; so I don't get what you guys mean when the other Floyd albums have the similar level of fidelity and mix to this new one.

Please don't mix remaster and remix, those are two VERY different things, as you can hear in this video. Almost no difference between 80s and 2016 remaster in contrast to the remix. As someone had said, a remaster is like polishing a car. A remix is taking the car apart, cleaning all its parts and building it back up from the ground.
@walllable

@@krnkrp The fact that remix and remaster doesn't particularly apply to the normal definitions of mixing and mastering doesn't help at all. mixing vs remixing can be pretty different Mixing a song and remixing a song doesn't usually mean mixing the song again, remixing usually means another artist's interpretation of a song, at least in the electronic music scene. Master vs mastering as well, where mastering is generally the final touches on a mix to make an album sound consistent and other vaguely more technical stuff, while a remaster usually involves mixing songs again... It's such a mess!

Right on. Also, of course, the updated cover is Battersea Power station being "re-built" - just like the remix, re-building the album for new times. Classic.
@pw3565
@pw3565 Жыл бұрын
I was working on the railway track above the arches adjacent to the power station when it was being rebuilt , the Battersea dogs home is next to the railtrack access where we would get on track, i remember feeling bit sad that the power station only had three chimney stacks erected , i thought the whole thing was being torn down never to be seen again so i took a picture as it stood that day, there was & i think still is a lot of changes in and around that area of london the rooftop horizon is totaly transformed with highrise apartments next to the rail track, there was massive cranes everywhere & when the wind got bad a lot of building materials would cause havoc & get blown all around the track . I have to say that i love Pink Floyd & have most of their albums but Animals has a sentimental place in my childhood , i kinda like the slight muddyness of it all because it represented the slight misty dullness of that era , im also almost thinking that the band deliberatly created that feel & sound to match that industrial time feel!? But i do & have always wanted to have it in a enhanced state just to hear absolutely every sound in the album clearer. When i play other albums of floyd & various other bands then play Animals the tone is totally noticeable & have to turn volume up so it remained consistant to the levels of the other albums i was playing . Overall the original album is an absolute masterpiece & yes i think what they have done with the remake of the album is brought it upto date & inline with the current climate feel for a cleaner fresh new environment free from the gritty muddyness of era’s past . Genius move!!

The compromise inherent in these remixed versions is there’s elements that get lost at the expense of gaining something new - certain things are clearer, but other things don’t have the same impact. Either way, it’s wonderful to hear a fresh take on something you’ve heard a million times! The drums on this version smack!

I have listened to it twice, and share your opinions about this improvement on what is a true classic. My first listen to this album was early 1977. Later on that year, I was fortunate enough to have 9th row seats at the Coliseum in Cincinnati for the Animals (In the Flesh) tour. That listening was in true quadrophonic sound, as they set speakers in the rear, both sides, and of course the stage around the smaller, more intimate confines of the Coliseum. Algie, as I called it, was on full display as it crept along over my head, along with other inflatables, as they played the entire album, took a break, then played, "Wish You Were Here", in its entirety, followed by "Money", as the lone encore, despite my yelling for more. My brother and I still say it was the best concert we ever saw, and I have seen many. So the remix gets my thumbs up, as it brings back memories from the Year of the Pig.

Totally with you on this. I think it is perhaps the most effective remix I've ever heard. Brings out so many textures that were buried in the old mix. As for Sheep, I'm not sure they brought the keyboards down; rather, to my ears it sounds like they reduced the stereo spread, so now the keys are a lonely sheep standing exposed in the middle of a field. I share your ambivalence about the vocals, though -- similar to what they did with George'a vocals in the All Things Must Pass remix. Less powerful, more vulnerable...and not sure if that's good or bad.

Both of them revert to 2.0 stereo on the front speakers and it is a beautiful start and ending of that particular mix experience. For $20 the BLU-RAY is worth having. I'm a recording engineer and I'm over 50, so I grew up with and love Pink Floyd, specifically Animals. I haven't heard this release except through your video, but just that small impression has told me a lot about what they were doing. I can see that they were honoring the original mix, which is great because Alan Parsons is a genius and the original album is beautiful, but I can also tell that what they were doing was trying to bring some of the refinements of modern mixing and the abilities of our modern DAW systems to clean up noise and return some bandwidth and fidelity to tracks recorded on tape. I agree with the choices in that respect, but I think as you mentioned, they've made some creative choices that lose the dynamic of the original. Everything in mixing is about trade-offs: whenever you're mixing a song it's always a toss up between artistic choices, the limitations of the recording material, the limitations of the gear, and even the taste of competing band members, engineer, and producer. As for the limitations of technology, remember that when they mixed this, if you wanted a delay, your most technologically advanced option was an actual tape delay machine like a Binrec (and a few years before that, it would have been rolling out actual tape decks and setting them all manually!) Now, we call up a plugin emulation and hit a preset button and I can do anything I want in 10 seconds. In this case it feels like they made some artistic choices that change some of the storytelling qualities of the original song, for example: less reverb or opening up the filter on a vocal, or changing the volume on the synths, which change how they're perceived. I wasn't in the room when it was done, so I can't tell who was a part of it and who wasn't and what changes they may have wanted to make that they couldn't make on the original mix. It may be that Roger himself thought the vocals were wrong and always wanted to change them, or that he wanted his bass to stand out more, or that he wanted to cut back some of the synths and couldn't in the original, or that David (greatest guitar player ever), wanted his solos to ring out more. My personal opinion is it's a masterpiece, and even the original creators should let it stand. If you want to replicate a mix exactly and simply add more fidelity to the tracks using modern methods, that's totally cool, but I don't think you should change the artistic choices. A remaster is great for that because it leaves the original mix completely intact and just attempts to increase fidelity on the song as a whole. A ReMIX literally takes the song apart and starts from "faders down"; it's an entirely new artistic event and creation, even if it replicates an original mix. That VERY different and becomes its own entity. (Just my take on it.) Overall, great video. Well done. Thank you.

Gilmour already gets far more credit than he deserves. His actions post waters show a man so in love with being a “rock star” that he would do anything to keep his status. Diet Pink Floyd is a joke, and his subsequent constant remasters of only his era of Floyd (can’t wait for yet another Pulse!) show it’s all about the money and pretend clout. I’m shocked that this Animals ever saw the light of day. Saw Waters in Concert last month, and there’s no way on earth Gilmour could put on a show that even sniffs how good waters still does it.

Roger's vocals on Pigs on the Wing sound more vulnerable and personal, more akin to the message of the lyrics. I think that stripping away all the reverb and echo was a good decision. I like the overall remix but there are a couple of cardinal sins, the keyboards on Dogs, one, the synths emulating the dogs vaguely resembled their intended effect. Two, the voice in Sheep reciting the psalm was deprived of its robotic nature, I expected it to sound more clearer in the remix but they just took away the effect. No bueno.

This remix was done by James Guthrie. The first time he worked with Floyd was on The Wall, as the engineer. On that album he immediately distinguished himself as a kind of wunderkind, a young genius. For example, it was his idea to make copies of the rhythm tracks and set the originals aside, and continue making overdubs on the copies to complete the tracks. So it was the copies that got played back over and over - and degraded - as the album took shape. Then at the very end of the process the original rhythm tracks were transferred to the working tapes. This is a big part of the reason that The Wall has such a special sound - so spacious, airy and uncluttered. The Floyd were so happy with the results that they twisted Guthrie's arm to do the live sound for the performances of The Wall, even though he'd never done live sound before.
@MobiusMinded

That’s just because locking up multiple tape machines with smpte time code had come into vogue. It’s was and is totally normal to fill up 23 tracks ((basic rythm track) then bounce a composite mix over to the second machine. Record OD’s on that, then lock up both machines for the mix. Years ago, before he passed. I had Doug Sax - famous mastering engineer who mastered the wall - at The Mastering Lab - which was in the same building as Producer’s Workshop where a lot of The Wall’s LA sessions were recorded and Mixed. Doug told me that using smpte and two machines was Bob Ezrin’s idea. Further. He also told me that Guthrie actually pretty much mastered the album as he was right next door and would touch up the mixing in context to how the mastering was coming out. James was very hands on.

That is amazing! I'm impressed overall, but especially as a bass player. There are parts that almost sound like they were replayed on different instruments or with different amplification. And yeah, the drums. Totally agree with what you are saying. Edit: Why in the name of Syd Barrett would someone change that album cover? No, no, no!

It’s a wise decision. It compliments the fact that it’s a big remix. It differentiates the two

I love this new mix. I totally love it. I was a student at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana in 1977, and stopped into a record store on campus and picked it up on vinyl of course.. instantly it became my favorite Floyd album..and still today..

I was on the fence about getting this remix. Your first clip with RW's vocals seals the deal. I've always loved this album from the cutout 8-Track I bought as a teenager. Very timely review VR, many thanks!

The 8 track edition of course contained an extra couple of minutes of music to fill out one of the "sides" which hasn't been released on any other format since.

Sometimes with the old 77' mix, I would be in my car wishing it would go just a little louder, now it does 😉. Now with the 2018 remix I reinstalled all my stereo components and already blew 2 shelf RCA speakers I thought could handle it. I have been hearing the differences in the tracks and am okay with most of them, however listening to the 77' mix thousands of times, it is like an old comfy hat where it feels good. I still have to break this new one in a little more, I do love it overall, and the 5.1 mixes as well. I agree with the cover art, the original had a more warm artsy feel. I am going to take into consideration what you pointed out in this video when I rock it on the vinyl again tomorrow 😁

I'm so glad you featured this remix. My LP copy just arrived, and I finally had a chance to sit down and listen. I don't want to trip into hyperbole, but this mix & pressing is *revelatory*. I've long had 'Animals' on my list of favorite albums of all time--certainly among The Pink Floyd's best. I have listened to this since I was a kid, early '80s, on LP (two different old copies from then), cassette, CD... It is an extremely familiar album to me. This version sounds like the boys recorded it just this past year, all playing/singing in their best form. It's fresh, and it feels extra relevant right now. The textures, the space between instruments and vocals, the grunt of the drums + bass--everything has more flesh, meat, and sinew on its bones. Rick Wright's keys are outstanding, with layers I haven't heard before now. Roger's singing is probably his best here. Everything has punch, kick, funk, attitude, and grit.

I'm really liking it. I agree with your comment about the mix of Roger's voice at the end, that's the only part where I prefer the original. I hope when they do a proper Immersion edition to match the others they include them all.... with the contentious liner notes 😁

Love your stuff. The patter and detail is great and most of important of all - you're obsessive, just like the rest of us. Being old enough to have bought Animals on its day of release, I find the new mix to be nothing short of miraculous. As you said, it's like a veil coming off. Rick's synth is a revelation, now moody and modern; and Dave's bass playing (yes, Dave Gilmour played much of the bass on the album - listen to the intro of 'Sheep', killer sensitivity and melodic phrasing - just like his guitar playing) is stellar. The separation of the instruments and vocals take a wee bit of getting used to. I love it. It's now my go-to for the album. Keep up the great work!

Thanks for that thoughtful review. I'm sure I don't have the sonic vocab, but it starts and ends badly with this mix, because, as you say, the reverb is removed from RW's voice in both iterations of Pigs on the Wing. I miss the chilliness. What I love is the packaging. It's stunning, and among the best I've ever seen. I don't need this album on vinyl (and if the comments at Discogs are anything to go by, it's a crackly mess - one person said even the cd is crackly!), but I'm tempted to buy it just for the cover and booklet, whose contents are of such of a high standard they deserve their own exhibition at the nearby Tate Modern.

For me it's like the Rush recording of Vapor Trails. They remixed *and* remastered it. The newer version is cool, but the original has all this wonderful warmth. So I own a copy of both.

One of the reasons Pink Floyd is my favourite band is because I actually feel like most of their albums, especially in Roger's era, don't sound from their time. The quality of the original mixes feel like something that would come out today, and a lot of the times even better due to the albums avoiding annoying mastering techniques that were present both in other albums at the time and today. You can notice it especially on Dark Side. While the atmosphere and vibe is 70s analogue, the quality and master process feels far and above most other works. What I felt the 2018 remix did for Animals, is it esentially encorporated some standards that a lot of bands and symphonic groups use today by making more of a distinction between the space the Bass and Kick Drum occupies, making the drums more clear and natural sounding and opening up the mix overall. The bass really sounds like the way its mastered in bands like Jungle, with more clarity and natural pressence while also beeing deeper. Overall I like the Remix better but I still am of the opinion that it sounds better because I just like it personally, not because any of Pink Floyd's og albums since Dark Side were mixed bad or even dated.

This new Animals is perhaps the only modern stereo remix that I think is necessary. Animals has always been a great album but it has always sounded muddy compared to its two predecessors, not to mention The Wall. The clarity and increased resolution of the new mix is indeed a welcome change. Too bad that the vinyl pressing is so troubled - many people report getting poor copies that are noisy and even damaged straight out of the shrink. I was fortunate to get a near-perfect copy. I would add that the blu-ray with the 5.1, stereo remix AND the original mix in high resolution is an essential package - it's short on the packaging but it has everything you need musically and in great quality. The 5.1 mix is brilliant, although it eccentrically avoids the center channel, making it more like a pseudo-quad mix.

Great analogy and I am going to be getting myself 1 asap .I'm a big fan of anything I have watched and I am going through the Playlist slow since you are the only channel that has captured the iconic feeling that I grew up in, with my memories so connected to the music from the 6o's and 70's and early 80's and this Pink Floyd album has been a healthy part of my adult life , although I've never been great at growing up 👆
