one tip for backing a fifth wheel and bumper hitch trailer is to put you hand at the bottom of the steering wheel and then move your hand in the direction that you want the back of the trailer to go.
@brucefay5126
@brucefay5126 3 жыл бұрын
True, but that is only the beginning of the story and the rest of the story never gets told. Once the back of a trailer (5th wheel or bumper pull) starts to move in that direction if you maintain the wheel in that direction the angle between the trailer and the tow vehicle will continue to change (get smaller) until you jackknife the trailer. Think about how your steer tires are turned when making a turn going forward. Once you have the trailer moving around to the left or right you have to return the wheel to the center or slightly the other way to maintain that radius of turn.

Hey Chad, that was one of the best and simplest explanation to understand how to maneuver a fifth wheel, "Think of the whole truck as the front wheels of the fifth wheel trailer". That is fantastic!,!!!!!!!!!!!

Most recent was my mom on the 6th of this month and I’ve just been tuned out of so much. So it’s my first time back on your channel in a few months and I’m shocked to be honest I never looked at the sub count. You guys are some of my favorite youtubers. Good job guys. Phil, a trick I learned when driving big rigs was to steer from the bottom of the steering wheel. From the bottom to make the tail turn left you push the wheel left, two go right push right. That way you don't have to remember left to go right and right to go left which is what you have to do when you steer from the top. But great job.

It all depends on what you get used to. I've been towing trailers for 50+ years, starting with pulling a hay wagon with a tractor on my grandpa's farm when I was a kid and currently tow a 24+ foot boat trailer at least several times per week, so pulling and backing a trailer has pretty much become second nature. That being said, I'm sure there would still be a learning curve pulling a 5th wheel since the pivot point is in a different location. The first time I got behind our "new to us" Class A, however, it was a TOTALLY different experience and harkened back to my days as a bus driver when I was in high school (and, yes, high school students driving the school bus was a real thing back in the day!). It quickly became second nature after the first several thousand miles. I have to agree with Phil that the ability to grab something to eat or drink, or go to the bathroom without having to stop at a restaurant or rest area is FANTASTIC!!

We tow a 31' 5th wheel with a 2019 Ford F350 single rear wheel axle. We very seldom have trouble driving in traffic, going into parking lots, fuel stations and rv sites. When we had our 30' motorhome, it was different. The motorhome moves as one unit and challenging to manipulate/articulate when in tight spaces. You just have to get the experience behind the wheel to get comfortable.

Hello to my two favorite RV travel KZbinrs. I have a video suggestion when the four of you are back together. I think both of the gentlemen are former military, I think both Navy. I think many of your followers would like to hear a camp fireside chat on both your individual military careers. Both formal and fun and serious stories. And maybe talk about how each other’s military positions interacted and relied on each jobs in terms on how our countries military performs as required and expected. Just a thought. Thank you both for your service. ❤️🇺🇸👍.

I recently upgraded from a TT to a 5th wheel. I'm still intimated by my 5th wheel rig, but one statement has made an impression with me. It's "The whole truck is the front wheel of a 5th wheel". Very good observation, and it settles a lot of this confusion I've been having. Love both your channels!

with a 5th wheel/pull behind, use the bottom part of the steering wheel. then you will turn the wheel the same as the direction you want your trailer to go. try it. it works. Go left -->turn bottom of the wheel left. Go right --> turn the bottom of the wheel right.

Great job!! The best advice my husband gave me was if I want the fifth wheel to go right turn the truck wheel left. So if you need right turn left and if you need left turn right. It’s so confusing but every time I park I say it over and over lol AND just act like the 20 people yelling about what you need to do are not there lol the first time I parked the fifth wheel I had my husband, park manager, other campers...trying to help and I seriously got so confused! My husband just told me to imagine it was just me and him there and it went so smooth!

As a single, senior woman who is about to go on the road with a 29 foot fifth wheel alone, I Loved this video and all its practical tips plus showing someone who is brand new to tell him the fifth wheel. I love the respect the teacher gave his student. I had just watched another video where Husband was teaching his wife and it was a whole different story. He would’ve made anyone nervous to learn because he kept saying how he hated relinquishing control to her and how stressed he was. He was so busy talking about his experience that he didn’t understand that he needed to focus on her, her learning, and her stress. I would love to see more videos, showing women learning to take an equal active role. It would really help me out. I have 30 years of experience, putting my ski boat in and out of the water and I am usually the only woman doing it. You learn a lot just by doing it, but it can drive you crazy if you’ve got someone stressed sitting next to you making unnecessary comments! Come on guys… Her up the women and give a role model to your young sons and daughters that this is a possibility. Let’s work for equal partnership please. Someday your wife may be all alone and still want to enjoy the RV life. I should know.

I was getting caught up with Changing Lanes and this episode came up next. I had to finish their episode and I popped over to your channel. Oh boy now I have another channel to start watching. We are weekend warriors up in New England but I really hope to run into you folks in some of our longer travels. Stay safe.

I had the opposite fear. I towed trailers & boats for years with little to no fear after the first few trips. Moving to a 34' Class A un-nerved me the first few trips. But then you get use to it and its no big deal. Now we are back to a trailer again. I think it's all just a matter of perspective. He backed in like he's done it dozen of times...

THANK YOU for doing this. I have wondered what it was like driving a 5th wheel. We have owned three RV's and a small travel trailer. We are trying to decide between a Super C, a Class A, or a 5th wheel.

Looks like you will be hitting that 100K mark any day now. I have never towed a 5th wheel, but I have towed a lot of commercial trailers that had goose neck hitches, so I imagine it will be similar enough to be comfortable with it. The sheer size of those Class A's is intimidating, but after seeing this, and Changing Lane's video, it might be easier than I think it is. Great idea the two channels had to do this, very good information.

Thanks, Dale. As of this reply, we are 86 subs away from 100K! I thought the same thing about the 5th wheel.

Last year I went from a 23' bumper pull to a 40' 5th wheel. It was a little intimidating at first, but now I can just wipe around. Never driven a class A. So long as you are having fun and making memories, that's all that matters. Thanks to my 2 favorite youtube couples. Have a wonderful new year. 2021 will be the year for fun trips

So, how many sea stories were exchanged in this excellent collaboration? Great relationship between the officer and the enlisted. This CG vet thanks both of you for your deep water service. Two out of my three favorite couples in sharing life in an RV on KZbin. Next collaboration could be with Trish and Mark of KYD and their Airstream trailer. As an eighteen wheel driver, Chad explained the operation of an articulated vehicle very well. I’m in the planning process of deciding what type of RV my wife and I want to go exploring in. Leaning towards a class C or A. You guys present so many great videos. Keep up the great work. Safe travels.👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👍🏼👍🏼😊😊👋🏼👋🏼

I think one huge thing to help people is to find an empty lot if you can and do just like you did - get some soccer cones (they are fairly inexpensive) and just play with your rig and see what the capabilities are, and see what your limits are. I drive a 30' DP with an 18' open deck car trailer, and every chance I can I play in parking lots to keep myself familiar with how it turns and backs with the trailer back there.
