Fantastic video on a very important topic for cyclists. I like the format too, i. e. an expert being asked relevant questions by experienced cyclists. Great stuff guys!

Completely agree here. This is something a lot of people just don't even think about.

Just did Augusta 70.3 with a 98-100 degree heat index. It was rough on the run. I did Base salt on the half hour mark, and Gatorade at the aid stations. Felt bloated by Mile 11 but didn’t cramp and didn’t get hit with the hypo, but man it was a tough run-walk in that heat index. 👍

This really really good information, at least for me. I wish I know this long time ago.

This is a very underrated subject. I have played with death without knowing about it.

The difficulty is what you are describing as the symptoms are very similar to blowing up though.

It's very very different. Hyponatremia makes you feel confused and no matter how much you rest, you're never fresh. Heartrate drops too.

Speaking of french fries at the very end... instagram.com/p/ByuQ173gG4G/ How long do you need to be out on the road before this is a concern though? I usually find the last 20km of a 100km ride to be getting pretty brutal, though objectively it isn't very far. Wondering if it may be a problem of dehydration (drinking ~2L of water in that time), a simple lack of food (though I usually pack some small non-salty snack), or maybe a lack of sodium/electrolytes/Brawndo.

wouldn't french fries have the opposite effect since it's high in potassium would counter balances sodium

And even if you bump up the sodium you run the risk of GI distress and not absorbing it anyway... yeesh. Bring on the 🍟

The thing about this video is it provided zero advice on how to avoid hyponatremia. You stated as facts you don’t have to replenish everything you lose. How much can you lose? Water? Sodium? Can additional sodium sources which are less likely to cause GI issues (e.g. sodium citrate) be utilized? In what quantities?

I think water because you only secrete around 10% of salt

Doesn't fail, watching how the puddles of sweat just dried up within 48 hours was so satisfying, I used what I read about the other day. Although it actually took about 72 hours for my sweating to normalize, I went ahead and go'ogled Cynthia Yulesin’s Stop Sweating Today and I don’t have to change clothes 2 times a day.
