They (the internet) say, "Injury-prone runners often find that splitting up long runs reduces the risk of injuries because you build in more recovery time and accumulate less fatigue and microscopic damage to your bones, muscles, joints, and connective tissues." So, for the first time today, I tried splitting my long run into two shorter runs.
Reddit users have something else to say about splitting up long runs, and I'm leaning more toward agreeing with them. "Here's the thing about splitting up runs: it changes the purpose of the run."
"As others have said, the long run is kind of its own thing; the physical (and mental!) training benefits you get once you hit the 90-min mark differ from those before."
Ultimately, the goal of the long run is to prepare you for what to expect on race day. I ask the rhetorical question, how can one be ready for it if you've never done it before?
