Is it Possible to Beat Half Life without Standing?

My quest to remove standing form all Valve games has finally lead to the first Valve game, the original Half Life. Will I be able to beat this one or will the Goldsrc engine be my downfall?

It's entirely possible. Look up and watch the Half-Life Done Enormously Warped speedrun, which completes the entire game without crouching already.

The invisible walls you encounter in the water are func_push, which are intended to causes resistance from the flow of water. Crouching doesn't deliver enough speed to overcome the push.

33:15 As far as I'm concerned you did everything you could to avoid any benefits that might come from not being crouched, so you're still in good... standing. I have numerous quibbles with Valve games here and there but one thing I've always quite liked is that it feels like, whether by accident or by design, they have forgiving design for platforming. As long as you are close enough to a platform, you generally can make the jump to it, even if it visually appears as though you are briefly standing on air. This could be a limitation of older game engines and bounding boxes, but it happens often enough (and with a few other minor details such as environmental hazards occasionally not ticking until you've been in them long enough to ensure that it wasn't just a fluke) that I'm inclined to think it's a deliberate design choice to not punish newer or casual players for seeing the spirit of the solution but not perfectly executing it.

some of these jumps could have been avoided with bunnyhopping also during the apprehension cutscene you're actually teleported to a spot behind the hp station and can move around

@@KazyMatman i think it has to do with the game's teleporting system, in that when you're crouched, it teleports you incorrectly into the ground instead of where you're supposed to be. i've had this happen in the final map of interloper as well. could try jumping maybe to offset the height? not sure

You could try doing a wallbug at 15:51 to avoid fall damage. You managed with the fall damage so it wasn't crucial or anything, but extra health is always nice to have. You can do a wallbug by walking into an angled wall at some angle. You might also be able to use a jumpbug, but those are tick perfect and may require you to change the framerate for them to even be possible.

fwiw, you don't need to spend a full $1000 on the index kit to play VR if you wanna stick to brand new hardware, the quest 2 is $300, and the quest 3 is $500. but if you're willing to check out the used market, there's quest 2s, quest 1s, and oculus rift Ss, all available for pretty cheap (from best to worst for PC VR, i'd say its the rift s, quest 2, and then quest 1. but you can also find quest 1s under $100 sooooo) but also if you were struggling with black mesa, i feel like alyx might be a bit of a stretch on your hardware. what's your specs?
