How do you survive the rock & roll lifestyle? Dave Mustaine was interviewed by Joe Rogan recently about the dark the side of the music industry. They touch on why it is so difficult to survive in this industry, and how it's possible to navigate it. What is it about the "rock & roll" lifestyle that leaves people so damaged and often in need of "self-medicating" substances? Has anything changed? Do we still glorify the strung out rockstar? Do we enjoy the car-crash? Tell me what you think.

Hello Justin. While playing it, I just "discovered" that radiohead's "fade out" chorus, is basically Visage's "fade to gray" - i need your opinion on this, i mean, it's Radiohead we are talking about, not some half-rapper!

Great video Justin. In fact, it's a consistently great channel. Dave has always been a total riff machine and I really respect his guitar work. The frustration I feel with him is that on one hand he laments the lack of people giving him frank advice, and on the other, he fires people at the drop of a hat. How can you expect people to tell you how it is if you're going to kick them out for saying so? However, his comments regarding self-medication are absolutely spot on and people should always be humble enough to listen to those who have been there, done that, and lived to tell the tale.
@jackcoleman1784
@jackcoleman1784 2 жыл бұрын
Nothing personal but unless you know of him firing any members explicitly for "telling him like it is" I don't really know how this is relevant. Could just be me but I don't particularly know of him firing any members for that. Also some members have quit of their own accord as opposed to Dave firing them both Broderick and Drover quit as well as Freidman. He fired Chris Poland and Gar Samuelson specifically for selling the bands gear to buy heroin and the entire "World Needs A Hero" lineup was essentially dismissed as part of Dave disbanding the band for two years. His return wasn't even supposed to be with a Megadeth album in that regard he wanted to start a solo career but was under contract for more Megadeth albums. He did have a second falling out with Chris Poland because according to Chris Dave or his management didn't want to pay Chris for his work on "The System Has Failed" which is pretty sleazy if true but I still don't think that's on topic.
@Turk_2023
@Turk_2023 2 жыл бұрын
It happened to him and the band that fired him ended up seeing some moderate success.... I think their name was Metallicat or Metalips? Some dude named Lars Newsted fired him. I think it's worked for Megadeth though, had he kept the Killing is my business line up and not hired Marty and Nick, Countown to Extinction and Rust in Peace wouldn't have happened.... His line up right after that had the double live album was killer... And now he has Kiko on guitar, and a killer drummer. On the flip side of all that maybe Crushem and that awful album never would have happened had the members not been afraid to speak up.

Very thought provoking .....I think many people view the Rock and Roll lifestyle through the lens of how " cool and glamorous" fame and the musicians appear to be...and many don't even think about the pitfalls and temptations and the consequences thereof....I honestly admire anyone who is strong enough to come out of the "other side"of rock to a healthier lifestyle....especially when it is still so prevelant.

It’s a romantic notion, the idea of the quintessential rockstar. Someone who bares their soul to the world through their music, abuses substances to cope with the physical, mental, and emotional damage of public scrutiny and touring, then finally succumbs tragically to poor choices. I still think Amy Winehouse had a death wish and wanted to be part of the 27 club.

I could have downloaded it for free off Limewire, but I wanted to support the artist. Since people rarely buy music now, I think its more than fair to send someone that you feel is giving you some entertainment and possibly even insight 10 dollars. Correction on the beginning there: Dave Mustaine did play on Metallica's original first demo tape No Life Til' Leather playing some of the songs and essentially the same solos that ended up on their first official album Kill Em All. He was kicked out right before they recorded Kill Em All and Kirk Hammet is pretty much playing all the same solos Dave made because there wasn't time for him to write new ones.

I actually used to run in the same circles as his illegitimate daughter (she didn't know he was her father at the time) and it's interesting because she was just as cold and abrasive as he is/was, so it was funny when she found out he was her father, because it made perfect sense (also, she absolutely looks like his daughter - same hair color, facial features, etc). She was a lesbian though, and he had just become a Christian when they met for the first time, and he was sort of giving her shit for 'living a sinful lifestyle' and he also dogged her for playing bass in her band instead of guitar, because "bass is for people who aren't good enough to play guitar" 🤣 I haven't seen her around in years, but I genuinely hope they were able to find SOME sort of father/daughter relationship, even if there was of course no real chance of them becoming super close - it's always cool to be able to stay somewhat connected to your biological parents.

Wasn't Sherlock Holmes an opium addict? Heroin & opium have been in widespread use for centuries. In earlier centuries it was believed that mind altering substances were beneficial in many ways and it only became problematic as science began studying the matter more rigorously. Heroin was used widely by jazz musicians during the 20s & 30s to medicate away depression & anxiety probs. Plus musicians tend to feel like they can find inspiration in mood altering drugs nomatter the time period. I think the creative process is so difficult for many that they start reaching out for any hand that's being offered.

As a young megadeth fan in the 80s I had no idea megadeth were doing things like heroin and meth(very early on) because in Britain, it was drilled into us kids that heroin was bad. I didn’t think anyone (I thought it was the drug of choice of really crazy, deranged people)would be crazy enough to use it I naively thought. I now know better though and have realized how widespread it was and is

When I was in active heroin addiction, the craziest thing I found was how many different people were using it.. Going to pick up from someones house and there would be teens to 80 year old grandpas grabbing the stuff. It's really sad.. It is a disease of despair which can effect anyone/any age.

Dude, love the backpacker. I'd wanted one for years but ended buying a Guitarlele from Mele Ukulele. It's very portable and fits in the overhead just like a piece of luggage would (it's in a hard shell case). I bought a Mango wood version with a tiger stiped ebony fretboard (it's gorgeous). I'd link the site but don't want to come off as pushing a brand on your site, just thought you'd like to check them out. They've been around for 30 years and produce high quality instruments in Hawaii. If you're on Maui, they have 3 stores there (Wailea was where I picked up mine).

I detest what the industry has become, but there was no way to avoid it. With that being said, I feel that we can keep what’s good about the streaming norm and also bring back what’s good about truly enjoying a band as a fan. Im a musician myself. Mostly a session player, but I did do a few tours internationally. Personally, traveling and being away from home did not facilitate my current sober life (22 years: Sept 21, 2000) so it was a rarity. I miss the days of going to the record store and buying my fave album, actually listening to the whole album (LP) as the artist intended. Nowadays, everything is quick fix..one song listened to a thousand times and then NEXT!! With that being said, we will never go back to that, but I feel we can still support artists and it’s not that hard. If the band has merch it’s selling online, BUY IT!! If they do tour, BUY TICKETS!! If they have shirts etc at their live venues, BUY THEM!! Now, the drug discussion here is seemingly done by two people totally disconnected from reality. A lot of artists live isolated lives. They become intentionally unaware of what’s happening in life and the world. I don’t want to offend anyone, but for me, Joe Rogan is a cauliflower ear, Mr. Potatohead. With that being said, he’s still more intelligent than 80% of the male population here in North America.😂

I like when he says, “There’s always someone around the corner ready to work harder than you…” Boy is that true for classical musicians. You think it’s competitive in the rock genre? Trying competing in the classical genre. It’s the most obsessed group of people you’ll ever encounter. 2set violin has come up with a great meme about it. They call it Ling Ling 40 hrs. Ling Ling is a fictional character who is a perfect prodigy and began practicing as a fetus. In order to become like the great Ling Ling, you’ve got defy all universal laws & practice 40 hours a day…and even then you won’t be as great 😂. No one who wants to be a Ling Ling has time for recreation, let alone recreational drug use. To all the Ling Ling wannabes…GO PRACTICE!!!

Record labels want artists with addictions. It's simple- sign people who can be controlled and manipulated by drugs and alcohol and sex and keep them faded enough to get them to sign bad deals. Get management who will bleed them dry all while pushing the narrative of the "damaged" artist to sell records. Best case scenario for a label is they sign someone brilliant enough who dies young and leaves their catalogue in their hands.

You missed out sheet music. From before mozart, publishing companies were flogging music in written form. Liszt was a rockstar in the mid 19th century (that's before record players had been dreamed up) and he made pots of money from publishing and touring.

It's not just that there are other bands out there, it's that there are far better bands out there that are yet to be discovered.. So if you waste your opportunity, no ones waiting around for you. The best bands I've ever seen live were local acts that never got lucky enough to get noticed by the right people.

Creativity needs chaos and sd&rr is an example of all out freedom. I think society encourages a long content life but nature has other ideas. We personify nature and it wants to create by any means necessary, most likely breaking things in the process, including hearts and minds.
