I own this saw and for what it is made for, a climbing saw, it is great saw. it is NOT a replacement for a Stihl MS201T or Husqvarna T540XP, BUT it is almost 2/3 the weight of either of those, there is no pull starting in the tree, much quieter and is about half the cost. One thing that I had to learn was to just deal with the slower cutting on larger branches as you saw in the video. If you try to force it, the motor protection cuts it out. The Stihl and Husqvarna battery saws do the same thing, it is just a limitation of battery saws for now. For me, I climb with this one and use it to remove all the small stuff and then switch to a larger saw once they get to about 7-8" in diameter, which is typically when it is time to start start chunking down the trunk for what I am cutting. BTW, comparing a 56V Ego with an 18V isn't quite apples to apples! :) Great review though, just wanted to add in my 2 cents since I actually own this product.

Great comment. I was looking at this from the perspective of a typical homeowner who is only going to buy one chainsaw. You were right about comparing the Makita to the Ego but it was more from the consideration of cost. Nonetheless great comment.

@@Kitearmy great point about if you are just getting one saw, this is NOT the saw you want! I have heard that one of the 36v models from Makita is a great choice for a single saw. I have used the Ego before and it is a great saw as well.

Kite Army don’t think a top-handle is the right tool for a novice chain saw user. Yes, it is nice and light, but not as easy to handle and harder to keep kickback forces under control compared to a rear handle chainsaw. And the compact size and low weight invite single handed use, which is pretty dangerous. A Makita DUC353 (xcu03) or similar from another brand, even though it is a bit heavier, is a much better option for beginners or generally pretty much anyone buying just a single saw. Safer, easier to handle and more versatile than these specialist top handle models.

This is a professional top handle style limbing saw. This is NOT for cutting down trees, it’s for maintenance cutting and for light duty cutting at height where small size and light weight are paramount. Ego makes AWESOME tools, don’t get me wrong, but they have nothing to compete with this tiny Makita.

Exactly. I'm glad someone made this clear. This saw is epic for its intended use. Super light and maneuverable while climbing. It's half the weight of most chainsaws. Plus it's an improvement over its ancestor, the xcu02 which is 36v and a brushed motor. The xcu02 has slower chain speed (+longer life as a result). This newer xcu06 is brushless, only needs 18v (less weight!), faster chain speeds, and is much more powerful.

This is a really good saw. You don't hog with this saw, and you don't cut 18 inch trees with this saw. Use it for what it's made for, keep it sharp and it's great. People throw these videos together without really using the tools for any length of time, or without even understanding how to use the tools. I think it's more about how many views I get than any useful information.

I own this saw and the top handle 36 volt version along with the 18" ego. They are all for different purposes. This saw is great and HANDY. It's a one handed pruning saw. It's best use is for the small stuff. For cutting branches to fit in the wood chipper it is unparalleled. It's great at what it does. I love mine. When things get serious.....husky xp saws take over.

I’m an arborist and this is one of my favorite saws. Excellent for pruning and climbing. It’s pretty lame out of the box. I would definitely recommend a 12” 1/4p .043 bar and chain and 5ah/6ah batteries. I’m gonna make my own video on it.

It's a pruning saw not built to cut large chunks of wood. Unless you burn wood that's all the saw you would need.

Your review matches my experience. I just borrowed one of these from a neighbor for cutting some green pear tree limbs between 3-6 inches and it powered right through them. It's limitations on larger, dryer wood should only be expected and not seen as a negative. By the way, holding an unsheathed chainsaw on your shoulder like that?....Yikes, not a good idea!

This is not a crosscut saw it is a climbing saw ...specialist ..Lightweight easy to use for climbing.I use for my climbing jobs ...brilliant...better than lugging 35cc around fuel etc...changed my life after 45 years of 2 strokes. I also use 4 STROKE ! crosscut saws...! !

I think it would be important to stress that this is a good niche tool, despite not being a good all around chainsaw. I’d agree with your review if the criteria was to choose one chainsaw for all needs, yeah this is a wimp. But if you want to conserve your own energy and you have lots of cutting to do. This thing can save the day when you’re limbing and cutting up the small stuff. Then turn to a larger chainsaw (I’d suggest a gas saw from a good manufacturer if you care about speed) through the large wood. But I really think the manufacturer wasn’t trying to fill the “all-needs” niche with this thing, like I say, but to give folks a really light saw for particular work. I own this saw and I love it but you do have to get used to letting it pace itself when you’re at the larger end of it’s range. If you push it, it stalls but as you learn to let it do the work, that barely ever happens. I still appreciated and enjoyed the review of a saw I’m falling in love with (in its niche) and I intend to look at more Kite Army reviews.

I love my dewalt 12” chainsaw. It’s perfect for homeowners with some decent sized trees to cut up. What’s appealing about this makita though it’s the top handle. And also the variable speed.

This is a great Chainsaw with full of protection especially the operator trying to stress the chainsaw and the chain stop ! However if you want to have less resistance then go for 1/4 pitch and it won't jams so often anymore.

It's not a toy. Top handle saws are for climbing and for trimming small limbs. They're not meant to be a stand alone do it all saw for larger sections. You need to review it for its intended purpose. Get up in that tree!

I do but I bought a ego 16” saw for that investment, I find the two together work great. Ego for the trunk and big limbs and sawzaw for the rest makes short easy work of all but the biggest trees.

I have both. Let me tell you, the 36 volt version with 14 inch bar is a BEAST. It has to be respected as it's a top handle saw with tons of power and torque. It's a niche saw though. It's has it's specific uses but is probably not the best choice for having just one saw for the typical homeowner. I will say though, the Makita cordless saws are more "professional grade" and higher quality than the ego saws imo. You can feel it the moment you pick them up. I love the ego 18" for its power....its great. It's also much quieter than the Makita cordless saws. The ego is positively silent. If you want a silent powerful "all-rounder", the ego is a good choice for the typical homeowner on a smaller lot. The Makita saws are a bit higher pitched and louder. Unfortunately, the ego has some big problems, namely the extremely slow spinup speed which makes limbing very frustrating and slow. It also has a plastic chain catcher...not good. For larger properties and more experienced users.....Makita. The Makita saws have neither of the ego issues. They spinup FAST and they have an aluminum chain catcher. They are just higher quality saws imo. I own and use them both.

I like Makita tools, and was considering this Mikita 10", or, lower price, comparable DeWalt 12" chain saw. But I can see it is not strong enough, and is not as good as my corded 12" chainsaw, which has never got stopped like the Makita. Underpowered and too expensive.

As you stated its a toy.. a plastic toy from China that looks like a chainsaw and for some women and people that are into flowers and plants and a little grooming.. it will be a right fit... as it is very dorcile and will not scare them. but Makita should have made it, in the non std Makita color... back in the day in Japan they had pink-colorline for some of their more consumerfriendly product that were highlighted for both genders and it can help consumers to not get their hopes up. but then again a pink color could made it look like a children toy and children at the age under 10 should not be playing with this..

For cutting branches 2"-3" this saw has no equal for its lightness and handiness. It's only 6.4 lbs. and can be easily used one handed. It does it's job very very well. I love mine and would repurchase in a heartbeat if it broke (it won't). It's just perfect for using with a wood chipper and for pruning. It's also a great truck saw to always have with you. Handy, fast, light, with good power if you don't force it. It is FAR FAR from a POS. If you need a heavier duty saw THEN GET ONE. It's not a one saw solution but it fulfils its roll very well.
