Stunning lens, I'm very impressed by the microcontrast, one of the best I've seen from a Sony lens. I use it 90% of the time with my A7IV. Its rendering is very close to the Lumix 50mm S Pro.

Thanks for the review...although it would be great if you did a comparison between this and the Sigma 35mm 1.4 DG DN Art!
@PavSZ5 ай бұрын
Thanks! It's not something I was planning on doing, maybe in the future. Sharpness wise, they will be pretty much the same. Sigma is however bigger, heavier and it suffers from ton of chromatic aberration ... it is however cheaper

Think I will stick with my Voightlander 35mm f1.4 Nokton Classic. Its so fun to use and the bokeh is nuts. This GM lens looks pretty amazing but so expensive for a 50mm lover.

GM prime lenses are the best. What I like the most about them is that they are excellent at every aperture. But, I hate changing lenses. When in the field I might need 35mm, then 24mm, then 50mm , etc. So, I find primes more useful in the studio. And, since I shoot mainly landscapes and outdoors, I mostly use GM zooms. Maybe not as good as primes, but very very close.

Love my 35GM and my sigma 85 f1.4 art which is just as good apart from build quality. My copy of the 85 looks like it's been towed behind my car with chips all over the metal part of the lens. My GM lenses all look like new. I will get the new 85 GM when it comes out, just a shame my 85 is worth next to nothing.
@PavSZ5 ай бұрын
Interesting. I have never heard anyone say that Sigma 85mm is not well build. What have you done with it to have it chipped all over?
@nickwilliams78675 ай бұрын
@@PavSZ I do not treat it differently to my 4 GM lenses, 35GM 16-35 24-70mkii 70-200mkii, they all look like new. The Sigma has small paint chips all over the metal part of the lens. I can't read some of the F-stop numbers any more. Such a shame as the lens is stunning in all other ways. It has stopped buying another sigma lens. I will get the new 85GM once it's out, just a shame my Sigma has lost all its value due to it's condition.

Great overview PAV, question are all your photos shot in 1.4? If not can you add in which ones aren't 1.4 in the bottom left with your presets as well as ISO levels? I like watching/learning what ISO/Shutterspeeds/Fstops you are taking photos at while watching, just gives me perspective.
@PavSZ5 ай бұрын
Thanks. All portraits were shot at f1.4. Some of the building were shot at f4 and f8. I wish I could put the camera settings on every photo but it is a huge job as I add a lot of photos to my reviews. Sorry

Nice review. I have the FE 35/1,8 and it works great at infinity or near mfd (it performs similarly to this lens near mfd I think), however at the 2-3m distance near wide open, it can have pretty bad bokeh. That's where I think the 35/1,4 GM can make a difference. Is the focus ring really "nice and firm" to turn?? I thought all newer Sony lenses had a very light focus ring
@PavSZ5 ай бұрын
I don't think you are ever going to get amazing looking bokeh at 2-3m distance. I think there will be only small difference between GM and f1.8 versions in that regard. The focus ring on this one was OK, firm enough and much firmer than that of my 50mm f1.2

@cameraprepper79385 ай бұрын
@@DoubleTheDom Not to me, I use manual focus 99.99% of the time, I do not need aperture 1.4 for a 35mm wide angle Lens, I like Lenses with a very high build quality, I like Lenses that are compact and fairly light weight, I like Lenses that can perform with outstanding image quality without software to enhance, I like Lenses that are not too expensive, so there are a lot to like about Voigtländer Lenses.
