As the slowest of back markers, I can tell you that whatever we usually do is not intentional. It's really scary at the back, Dave. It's all about timing. Sometimes we get it right. Most times - well, we're trying.

Looked up Aeg's profile, over 2000 races with most being in Mazda. He knew exactly what he was doing!! intentionally not giving space, he was not involved in any battles and was more than likely pissy being at the back.

I am usually at the back in almost every race I am in, but I would have been keeping an eye on my relative and seeing how close the 3 leaders of the race were. I would then have got out of the way and slowed down on the banking going into the last chicane. I often try to move out of the way even before I need to usually on a straight or fast section of the track where it is the safest. Nothing worse than being so slow and trying to improve safety rating and then holding up the leaders in a slower section and then have them force there way through, ruining everyones race. Great job to you Dave for keeping up with them and you deserved that fastest lap. As for your final position, you may have go there and possibly won as it looked like Jan and Luca might have battled on that last lap if not for the back marker clipping Jan and forcing him to jump the kerbs and crash.

Well, I learned the meaning of 'back marker.' I'm still confused over everyone talking about the low iRating but being fast. I'm still pretty new to sim racing and my times are the low 132s and high 131s on the Charlotte track. I didn't think I was fast. I thought everyone was just slow. I guess that's why I'm always at the top of every practice session.

I raced Luca this week. He did the same to me :] He's super quick and consistent ! I had my best ever race following him, bang on 31.8s, 9s, 32 flats, but he kept me just outside of the draft the entire race. I did end up winning one race last week tho, so not all lost ☺ So all things considered, you have done very well. If you haven't raced here the entire week like others have, that is a really impressive showing. Although I suspect you damaged the right front coming out of T1, and you were already compromised on the straight, even before hitting the left side. Even so, that's a good showing 👍 I would've loved to meet you on track tho. Maybe this week on laguna 😀

That seemed like a fairly sensible appeal to common-sense, let alone etiquette or self-preservation. Without any explanation from the backmarker we're left guessing his intentions - which illustrates the problem! Balancing speed and safety is tricky.

Good race but the back marker needs to understand racing etiquette. Move under the appropriate apron before the first oval chicane (on the straight) or move up the oval on exit of that chicane to allow you all to pass under. If you’ve driven in any multi class or enduro you have to do this all day.

He was either nervous and didn't know what to do, or he was one of those guys who think, "well, if they're so fast they should be able to get around me." I usually give people the benefit of the doubt, unless they do or say something to make me think otherwise. In multi-class, I don't think slower classes should necessarily have to slow down, just stay out of the way and let the faster cars get around when they get up close behind you. However, if you are being lapped by your own class, you need to step aside, especially if you are not fighting for position. In any case, it's a good reason to keep the radio on and map button. A little communication can go a long way.

The blue flag is for information purposes only. He doesn't have to do anything. He can also race them and defend if he wants to. As such, P2 did a bad overtake. Rules set aside, the "back marker" could have indicated early on that he was about to get out of the racing line and let everyone overtake. It's important to remember that he isn't to blame for the P2 crash.

@@IliassRacing Often see this and its utter bollocks. Yes the blue flag is for information only, because iracing dont want to deal with reports for it, they'd be inundated. But the rule also says in the very next sentence to make every reasonable effort to let the car pass safely. That does not sound like you can defend to me and if you defend as a backmarker you're a total idiot.

The backmarker could (should) definitely got out the way earlier, but I don't think you can blame the crash entirely on them either. It was difficult to see from the brief clip at the end, but Jan looked to have either misjudged his braking and/or the line. The irating range was quite large and faster drivers often underestimate how much worse a slower driver is on the brakes - Jan could have avoided the issue too just by reading the situation better, but probably was just pushing to get that position back.

Yes the incident was on Jan 100%. I don't think he expected the lapped car to brake early to let him through there. I didn't either tbh. Could have been souch worse and it's usually the lapped car that comes off worst.

@@SosaKinkos it definitely helps with the blind spot or the other one that shows cars beside you. I just started using the track map with the corner names. also the track map helps with a visual of the cars behind or ahead of you. seeing the irating and safety rating of the cars you're racing with. it also has widgets on it showing track temp, and previous lap times, and a nice delta bar. lots of things I use it for.

I think the cars you pass should stay at the racing line. And cars that should pass do that outside the racing line. That is way the safest, cause the slower drivers already have problems keeping up the pace. Forcing them off the racing line will only induce accidents.

honestly, I'm always for a backmarker holding their consistent racing line, maybe easing off the throttle early to let someone by, but asking them to go off line to get out of the way is asking for unpredictability and potentially causing someone already struggling to put themselves in a worse situation and make everything bad for everyone. jan tried to force the issue to stay locked on to the leader. unfortunate mistake on jan's part

I wonder if the bigger question is "Should iRacing update their Sporting Code?" Someone here said it's reportable but what exactly can you report him for? Blue flags don't mean yield to the cars behind, they actually don't provide any instruction at all. He did the one thing the code states "maintain a consistent line", but didn't do the recommended "makes every reasonable effort to facilitate a safe pass". Not defending the backmarker, he clearly had two good opportunities to help the leaders get by safely and absolutely should have.

Blue flags in iRacing do not mean jump out the way, however, if you’re in a similar powered car lift off and let the leaders past and if you want to move off line, do so when the overtaking cars are far enough behind to see and recognise your move. And do it on a straight at the earliest possible opportunity. Obviously, there are exceptions and caveats to this but the situation in this video should never happen. No, blue flags do not mean “get out the way” like they do in F1, but if your car is the exact same car, being proud and thinking “I don’t HAVE to move” will mostly end in an unpredictable (predictable/avoidable wreck). It’s a shame more simmers getting lapped don’t think “what would I want me to do, if I was the faster car”. Also, a braking zone is probably the least favourable place to allow a car through 😂 for me anyway.

The backmarker was technically following the rules. So I'm technically okay with it. He could have easily gone high in the oval section and backed off though. It's what I would have done.

On public roads, I am technically in the right to pull forward when the light goes green, but I still look to see if anyone is running the light before I go. I had a back marker hold me up for 2 laps on that circuit last week, fighting for the lead as well. Came to the 1st chicane and I just bumped him out of the way. Got what he deserved. So many chances to let us both through.

As a slower car on track.the #1 rule is run your line the faster cars will find a way around the front cars have this ego that you must get out of the way NOW. But all pro drivers say just doing a abrupt move can throw off the front cars line so just run your line.

Global Mazda... It's a Rookie series with rookie drivers, especially those at the back. The irl racing driver should have been aware of the situation and made allowances for it. He didn't. He made a reckless pass and paid the price. Everyone can and will have an opinion about what the noob driver in a Rookie series shoulda/woulda/coulda done differently, but a quick look at the rules will prove they dont know what they're talking about: As per iRacing's rule book... the car making the pass is responsible for ensuring they make a safe, clean pass. The car being overtaken, especially a noob in a rookie racing series, has no obligations to do anything other than maintain their line and do nothing unpredictable. They did exactly what they were supposed to do. The irl pro driver fked it up.

It doesn't matter if you drive 1 hour per week or 8 hours a day (I don't btw). It's just basics. Awareness, courtesy, call it what you like, he should have made it so much easier for everyone (himself included). If you look at a race where I'm in the slower car, I talk about letting people overtake where I want them to. I certainly wouldn't want 3 cars up my chuff on the exit of that chicane that's for sure. Would you have read the situation better than he did?

When you're not racing anyone and are a lap down, is it really worth putting yourself in a situation where you risk upsetting the outcome of the leaders? It wouldn't have changed anything for the lapped car to move up onto the banking to let the 3 cars go through and continue their battle.

I agree, but common sense would suggest you just move aside when there is space to do so although he would have had the blue flag before the first chicane. We've all been taken out at some point by battling cars lapping us. Self preservation in these situations is key.
