I tell you Bryan, carrying packs (2 sheets) of 12 foot drywall all day and stocking it into businesses and homes had me ripped. My calves wouldn't even fit in most jeans so I had to get a size larger in boot cut and I wore a 3x t-shirt because of my shoulder muscles. What it also did was affect my joints and now I have severe bursitis and arthritis pain in almost every joint in my body. My orthopedic doctor told me that the damage I have is common to athletes and body builders, but that because of the rampant steroid use in those two categories the damage they have is generally more severe and requires surgery, whereas I control pain through stretching exercises and herbal anti-inflammatories like turmeric and ginger tea and haven't required any surgery at all.

I do about 30 minutes to 45 minutes tops do a little cardio to cool down and I get out of there. I'm listening to worship music or sermons each and every time. I don't incorporate anything worldly into it. I believe my body is the Temple of the Holy Spirit of course. So I just want to look presentable. I've always wanted to be stronger and larger amd to a certain degree I still do. Mostly it would help with my work and just being a man you know we want to be perceived as masculine as much as possible. But I'm still pretty lean. And I'm relatively okay with it. There are a lot of people in sports like wrestlers, baseball players and football players who get into bodybuilding and they eventually take steroids and that actually kills many of them off, like what happened to Eddie Guerrero in 2005.

If your a man being productive and caring for his home and family you should naturally possess fitness. Becoming obsessive and consumed with it or anything takes us away from focus on Holy Spirit.

But I'm 63yrs and I have reaped what I have sown in earlier years and if ya had told me when I was 18 -35yrs that now at 63yrs I would spend a few hours aday studying the Bible, I would have though ya was nuts but by the Grace and Mercy of God here I am. I am learning about water kefir and kombucha tea. Now on a fun note; under this flab, there is a ripped muscle man LOL

"bodily exercise profiteth little" is talking about ascetic practices like extreme fasting and flagellation, it has zero to do with bodybuilding the English of the KJV is not the English of today, you cant read a word like "exercise" and just assume it means what we mean by it today, the language has progressed over the centuries

Well some might interpret this along the lines as those you can do, those who can't criticize etc... But to not maintain strength in what ever way possible to allow you remain an active participant in promoting the kingdom of heaven on earth while you still have the breath of life would seem to be an insult if not being down right ungrateful / disrespectful to God for giving you this option to avoid other avenues of distraction that could easily draw you into a serious lifestyle of sin... If you get my drift.. Allow them to learn to love their teacher and they will be ready to love their teachers God... The downside is that those who are in the wings waiting to embrace Christianity as a lifestyle (as it were...) might say to themselves, if I be come a Christian i'll be be chained to a system of legalism... Not so good... Two to three hrs a week to pump iron to help maintain sanity (among many other side benefits...) does not seem like a man is worshiping his dumbbells and barbells... Just sayin...

If God had intended for us to have huge muscles, He would have given them to us without effort. Chimpanzees have huge muscles naturally, even when raised in captivity. I'm similar to Bryan in that I was a 6'3", 148 lbs guy in high school who couldn't do one push up. So, I did try to work out to gain muscle. I barely gained anything. This is because my diet was terrible, lacking meat for the vast majority of the week. My mental health was also terrible, and this was also due to the diet. Fast forward a little, and I ended up working at a physical job lifting heavy paint pails all day long, and I noticed that all of my coworkers, and myself, were all very strong without going to the gym. I improved my diet during this time; I had way more meat and fat and yogurt and kefir to build up my gut health. Doing this allowed me to gain weight in a healthy way without looking like a gym rat, and it also fixed my mental health. I now weigh in the 190s range. I don't work there anymore, but I still have the muscle without effort, because it's the diet, and not the exercise, that gives it to you; right now I have the same amount of muscle that I used to have to work out for. However, working there also taught me that the people who have power don't do any of the heavy lifting, and they live much longer because of that, while we suffer with arthritis in every joint, spines fusing together, etc.. There is nothing healthy about exercise, period. Exerting yourself saps your energy and makes it hard for you to have energy to heal, think, and otherwise develop for longevity. Just eat natural animal products, go for walks (do not run), stretch, and that's it. I look about 6-7 years younger than I am because I never got into sports and all that other stuff.

Walking for fifteen minutes a day, staying busy with your hands and arms is all you need to do to stay physically healthy. Athletics will cause you suffering when you get old. Diet is even more important.
@K3N-s8w9 ай бұрын
There is too much duality in this line of thinking. It's quite gnostic and a slippery slope toward Cathar beliefs. The flesh is not the enemy, it is a temple that houses the soul. We fight not against flesh and blood. Also there is a case to be made for weightlifting. It can be very therapeutic in that it corrects muscle imbalances caused by repetitive movements of manual labour. It can improve performace on the homestead, it encourages injury prevention when done properly. Complete rejection of the body is wrong and ungodly. This is a temple for the soul to temporarily reside in. Its in our interest to take good care of it.

@K3N-s8w9 ай бұрын
The human body is a creation of the Almighty, and is neutral not purely evil. This is a dualistic gnostic heresy condemned by the Orthodox church. “Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ?... Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you” (1 Cor 6:15, 19) "For the temple of God is holy which temple you are” (1 Cor 3:16, 17)" “...glorify God in your body and in your spirit which are God’s” (1 Cor 6:20) If the body was evil, Paul would not have said this as something purely evil cannot glorify God.

@@K3N-s8w Do you believe the flesh is redeemed when a Christian gets saved? Or does the flesh remain corruptible?
@K3N-s8w9 ай бұрын
The flesh, is referring to 'the passions', which is not exclusive to the physical body, but also the soul. The soul is susceptible to powerful emotions that can also lead toward corruptiblility. I might add any created being with free will is susceptible to corruption. Take the angel Lucifer for example, a purely spiritual being, became corrupted without a 'fleshly' Body. I don't subscribe to the Protestant view of being 'saved'. I believe it is a process of healing and transformation, Theosis.
@K3N-s8w8 ай бұрын
@craiglanyon7752 Again, the 'flesh' isn't referring to a physical body. It refers to the 'passions' which come from both the physical and spiritual worlds. I don't understand your reasoning here. Are you saying lifting weights leads to violence? That is nonsense. You are taking what I said above out of context, I said when done properly it can help a man become more effective on the homestead. Lifting logs, lumber, pails of water, big tractor tires etc. It teaches you to lift correcrly and reinforces good form to prevent injuries. I know so many old famers with messed up backs and hips because of poor form / muscle imbalances, something that weight lifting can correct. What about eating food? It can lead to gluttony. Are you going to avoid eating food lest you commit one of the deadly sins? This is where self-control and humility come in, to tame these passions.

You beat me to this. I was going to preach on this soon. Proverbs 11:1 KJV A False balance is abomination to the Lord: but a just weight is his delight. I agree don’t let it become IDOLATRY. Also anyone who is taking steroids to increase muscle growth needs to REPENT. That’s wicked. I personally don’t need to go to the gym. I have my bodily exercises that works for me. To stay is shape. Gluttony is a sin. And people in the body of Christ should stop over feasting and do some fasting. 👉 Ephesians 5:29 KJV For no man ever yet hated his is own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the Church. Also at the judgment seat of Christ things done good or bad in his body. 👉 2 Corinthians 5:10 KJV
