I bought a Chevy K3500 that was an insurance write off because it slid sideways on some ice and hit a pole. It left a dent on the side of the bed. Bought it for $800. That was about 4 years ago, I use it to tow from the auction to the shop. Not a bad price for a 4X4 one ton diesel. Never did fix the dent.

Texas doesn't give two craps. I bought a car that drove perfectly from auction with salvage history. I just wrote N/A on the form for replaced or repaired parts. It passed emissions and I was good to go. The only issue I ran into was Nationwide wouldn't insure it but Geico would so you might have to shop around for insurance.

I really enjoyed your explanation. From a buyers perspective, you will own the vehicle until it's no longer operational. It is very difficult to sell it on the used market and the majority of dealerships won't come near it. So, if you're planning on owning the vehicle for a long time, it's a great deal!

Great video! I got a Honda del sol with a rebuilt title in a trade a few years back. I had torn it apart, engine swapped it, and converted it to a manual and honestly found nothing other than a bumper replaced and a macco paint job. It was a great car and gave me no issues. Whereas I had an BMW E46 with a clean title that had hidden unibody damage. No accident on record and could not see it without removing the fender. It ate through tires. I could never get it aligned properly because the strut tower was bent a little out of place. No one should be scared away by a rebuilt car if you do your research beforehand. From my experience there are probably way more “clean” cars out there to stay away from.

Your hood ground isn't connected:10:38. Those stickers under the hood, you can order those from the dealer or online reproduced. No way they salvaged that truck for minor damage. Airbag, module, seatbelt pretensioners aren't a ton of money in comparison to a 70k truck. Michigan reconstructed title is a joke. They have a spot where any mechanic can sign off on it saying the car is fixed with "workmanship standards". Then you take it to a police officer that specializes in the process. You bring them all the receipts of parts purchased and a sheet that said what was done. They are just looking for stolen parts, check the hidden vin numbers on the car and send you on your way. Then you apply for the rebuilt title.

It's really up to the insurance company if they want to total a vehicle. If they think the frame was damaged they will total it. In today's market because of supply shortage issues with non available parts insurance companies are totaling out easily repairable vehicles. Even Hoovie did a video last year or back last Winter on a wrecked Jeep Rubican that could have been fixed but the insurance company totaled the Jeep and the owner (not Hoovie ) bought a Hyundai SUV.

The big problem with salvage/bad titles is that established credit unions won't touch them. It's usually written into the sales contract, too, that they will not loan on them. This forces the buyer to fall back on in-house financing, which often has enough strings to tie quite a knot, at lousy interest rates, around our necks.

I came across this video because I am from Massachusetts and there is a jeep XJ for sale at a dealership for 2500 bucks because it has what they said was a salvage title. Turns out that it's not a salvage title but a rebuilt title, but it's advertised as having a salvage title. I thought I would have to jump through all the hoops but now I know (thanks to you) that I can just buy the thing and have it registered.

The answer to the question in the title is ... Maybe. I've been rebuilding insurance wrecks/salvage cars for 30 years and I've seen all sorts of "rebuilds" from excellent professional level rebuilds to shit screwed together with sheetrock screws and packed with Bondo. It typically depends on who does the rebuild and why. I typically buy late model, higher end, low mileage salvage cars and invest anywhere between $1000 to $10,000 in parts and 3 weeks to 3 months of labor. My goal is having invested less cash than 50% of what it would cost me to walk into a dealer lot and buy the same car as a clean title used car. When buying a rebuilt/reconstructed title car (or any other used car for that matter) it really is "buyer beware". If the buyer is not comfortable inspecting the car themselves they should take it to a mechanic or body shop for a thorough inspection.

State to state, "salvage" branding requirements change. I'm in Missouri and here, just because the insurance company paid out on it and took possession, it does not automatically deem it salvage. We have a "total loss" option which means it was wrecked and paid out on, but for whatever reason, was not fully "salvaged". So as I said, State to state it must be different.

You are correct...........any flood damage, even fresh water, will cause problems at some point. Many people think........oh, no problem, it wasn't salt water. Not true. An electrical problem could show up a year later and be a pain in the backside. Unfortunately, there are loads of them in the salvage market.......and maybe on used car lots.

I live in PA and I am in the business of salvage cars,we also sell anything from Hyundai to Porsche. The way insurance company's total cars today is not the way it was 30 years ago,we will get current model year cars that literally need a few thousand dollars to repair but will be totalled. An example today is parts availability,if a part is backordered for 3 months it may get the car totaled as the rental bill will add thousands to the bill. Also,any type of water damage is a flag for a total,we have had cars that have only been in a parking lot where water only comes up to the hubs but it can be a total, I have a 2020 GMC in my driveway that was this way,no water inside,but it was in about 6 inches of storm drainage overflow,it was a total. Also I have a 2021 outback that needed only a headlight and a front bumper cover and a very small dent in the fender,it was a total. I have seen $160k vehicle's totaled with only minor damage that happened on the dealers lot,but they won't/can't sell as new after repair. I can go on an on with examples as there are many,but bottom line is anything can be repaired,way to many variables as to why something can be a total,it comes down to the person repairing,some people should not repair cars and these are the ones that put a bad name to the business. Our philosophy is if it is wrecked to a point that we can't repair it at our shop,then we are not going to try and fake it and have a problematic car on the road. I can say in over 30 years of selling literally thousands of vehicle's,we have never had a come back due to a repair that we had done,not one. And I can't agree more,if you are looking at a rebuilt title car,have it inspected by a trusted shop,even though most states require a enhanced inspection,we are human,we may miss something,it is better to pay a few hundred up front than to find you need thousands down the road. There are some really shady characters in this business,if you do not know for certain what you are getting into ask a trusted shop to help you.

Glad I don't live in New Hampshire because I've bought many cars at auctions that have a salvage title and sometimes if i don't want to repair it immediately but I want to start driving it, I can take my salvaged title that was given to me from the auction and go straight to the dmv and get it registered. All I need to do is get a safety and emission and that's it and pretty much all they check for me is the vin to make sure it matches with the title and all the lights to make sure they work and that's all to get the safety. They don't even check lights on the lights like ABS, Check Engine, Air bag light, etc!

I'm so glad Greg mentioned bad auto repair shops. I watch vechor youtube channel and Scott will buy donor vehicles to make repair to the repaired vehicle. Anyway on Chevy Truck he did had previous body damage. He talked about a bad body shop in California that will make crappy repairs to cut cost. He showed I think a crushed rear part that was badly welded and the truck was repaired at that shop. Or it could have been a different truck. I recommend watching his videos that will show you what a true rebuilt vehicle will be like from start to finish. Also Greg didn't mention it and I'm shocked that he didn't bring it up because this a good way to tell if auto rebuilder did quality work in the interior as well is by checking the seatbelts and airbags. Scott also talks about that on one of his videos. If the seat belts are locked up from an accident and side air bags are not replaced or seats have new stitching from where the air bags should be and of the air bags warning lights come on definitely avoid that vehicle at all cost. It will tell you right off the bat corners cut and repairs were done half assed. Seatbelts that are locked up has to be sent out and rebuilt along with getting new airbags. This person could put in a new airbags for the steering wheel buy just cut out the side airbags from trim panels and if you don't have that inspected you won't know if new airbags were installed or not. One other thing Scott mentions in one of his videos that Greg did not is you have to ask if your insurance company if they will cover your branded title vehicle. They also will do a title check and not all insurance companies will cover a salvage or rebuilt title vehicle. So you could end having to change your auto insurance company.

90% of the cars I purchase are salvage, which I then convert to rebuilt, and lately I’ve been extra careful with purchasing “clean” title cars at auctions here in Texas because our “value-to-repair” percentage cost is different here compared to other States, let’s say Michigan for example. It could leave Texas “clean” and Michigan issues a “Salvage or Rebuilt” title. I have to make it extra EXTRA clear to the customer that the car has been in an accident, repaired, and registered as required by law. Enjoyed the video, keep them coming!

Auto body tech here. There is no way the damage you described would total a $70,000 truck. You can bet it needed a complete frame replacement at the very least. Hacks will buy a total like this and patch it together for a quick buck. I would never buy a late model rebuild because they are almost never repaired properly using OEM procedures. Older cheap cars can be a good rebuilt buy since just a minor accident will total them. Usually they can be repaired with cheap bolt on parts and will be safe to drive.

Just remember, it doesn’t have to be 70k in damage. Most insurance companies will total out a veh once it reaches a % of the value. Some total at 50%. Some at 70%. It just depends on the insurance company and the state. Also, some insurance companies will total out a veh if the insured is being very difficult. Seen many a time that an insured never wants the veh back after a brand new veh has 20k or 30k of damage on it. Also, remember that you could also (depending on the state) could include a claim of diminished value that could be a high amt. Just Fyi

I looked at the original auction photos, the steering wheel, passenger front seat and curtain airbags all blew. The back window is gone, it really looks like the engine is tilted towards the drivers side. The bumper on the passenger side looks like it's pressing into the wheel. Could tell the suspension is all messed up. The fender in front of the door is pushed in so the whole front end is shifted over too. Someone bought it from the insurance auction and then ran it through again after doctoring it up some. Those buyers sold it at a Copart auction in Maine, showing lots of faults.

My 16 Mustang GT was a total loss 5 years ago, but because the damage was less than 75% in Texas and I kept the car, it still has a clean title. But it does show the total loss on the Carfax, so any trade in valuations reflect it as a salvage vehicle. I got an offer of about $10,000 from CarMax and Carvana, while a regular car would be $25k or so. Needless to say, I won't be selling it anytime soon. I did save about $15k rebuilding it vs buying a comparable 1 yr old car.

Personal opinion, you can’t ever just say definitively that a salvaged title is or isn’t a good way to go. I think it is very, VERY vehicle specific. My little bro bought a Prius that is salvaged. The only reported damage was quarter panel repairs, but the frame is tweaked and someone had tried to straighten it. He has been mobbing it for 5 years and has been very lucky to have 0 issues. But that isn’t the case every time. Had a homie had to junk a vehicle after a year because the damaged repaired was extremely understaffed and the engine seized.

How is the engine failing connected to the car being salvaged?
@P4SDetails
@P4SDetails 3 жыл бұрын
@@dizk5283 the car received a branded title, apparently, after a collision that damaged some major engine components (along with some body panels). The shop that repaired it strategically fixed it to make it maximize profit for them but it directly led to an engine failure down the road. My point was not to show two anecdotal stories. I really want to say that it is never a yes or no on a branded title. It is always case by case.
@P4SDetails
@P4SDetails 3 жыл бұрын
@@dizk5283 I had this all typed out earlier and then got distracted. Here goes round two. Homie bought a car that had a front end collision and was rebuilt so it had a branded title. The company that repaired it half efforted something in the motor part of the rebuild. It checked all the boxes as being fixed, but wasn’t done correctly. Motor failed. Second, third, and fourth opinions confirmed that it was because of the accident and rebuild that the motor failed. Two anecdotal stories do not a trend make. The biggest point I am trying to make is that it isn’t wise to say it is fine to buy a rebuilt title or you should never buy a rebuilt title. It should always be a case by case. It should be excluded as an option, but it should be made with plenty of research.

You just need a Adas calibration on the front view camera. It's a dynamic calibration. Needs to be put in learn mode and driven until complete. But you will need a real scan tool or ford Moco oem tool. Those loose wires are for the up fitter switches inside the truck. Just pre wired

Too often the title branded vehicles I see for sale do not have any pictures of the damage, so it is hard to know how bad the damage was. With photos showing cosmetic only damage with no frame of drive-train issues I would be willing, for the right price.

The best auto rebuilders will use a donor car. Cut out the major bent up body parts and weld in parts from a a donor car. To tell a bad repair from a good one is you use a paint meter and a magnet. The magnet. will tell you of and how much bondo filler was used. The paint meter will tell you where and what parts were repainted. Like Greg said you also need to a have an competeinspection.

In Colorado, banks will not loan any money on rebuilt / salvage vehicles and all R/S vehicles must show it out on the title. Car Fax will also flag it. If you do the work yourself, okay, But I would not drive one rebuilt by another person. Flood vehicles are a TOTALLY different story. It takes a few years for the electrical issues to pop up. The water gets into the wiring and eats the copper....turns it to white powder. Then its game over.

Another point to keep in mind is that you can not get more than liability insurance on a branded title car. A lot of insurance companies won't offer coverage any more.

Hey Craig, the camera needs to be recalibrate. I made a ton of $ on salvage cars. especially in the current market. when customers save 30% they don't care about the title as long as you are a known trusted dealer. I bought a 2016 corvette with 20k for 31k ! all it needed was a rear bumper and 1/4 panel $2000 dammage!!!! i bought many cheap cars all needed was a grill etc... but one thing I do, its that I'm the one doing the repairs myself and scheduling the title inspection, I allmost never buy salvaged cars from other dealers. you mentioned that its a clean title, in NY many times it will come back with a clean title after the DMV inspection, no branding at all! but the carfax does pick it up 98% of times !! good luck and u don't have to worry at all with crashed cars everything can be fixed right, it only depends if it makes financial sense. I'm with you in regard to flood cars I don't touch them, way to many things to go wrong but again if u know what to look for it may bring u more money then crashed. good luck

Its because those cameras have to be readjusted by the dealer, which costs money. Also, there are times they wont do it, because it had front end damage and dont want to be responsible if it now fails going down the road. Which in itself is the problem with fixing newer cars with all this tech in them. U either need a ford specific scan tool which is an easy 20k or more probably, but whoever has one, is getting that money back which means its expensive to fix

I've bought and repaired (myself) two vehicles so far. Both came from Copart. Advantage to this process is 1) I see firsthand the damage, and 2) I rebuilt them myself for myself meaning I cut no corners. As you noted, the challenge on these cars are twofold. One, financing, and two, many insurance companies will not insure a rebuilt title vehicles. Topic for another video....show me and others how to buy and re-certify the title on a vehicle that has been stolen that the VIN was removed on. I had the option to buy a Ford Raptor with almost zero damage that was at Copart and missing its VIN tag, and I steered clear of it because I had no idea what the process and costs were involved in getting it back on the road.

What I want to know will you still be able to get insurance on a rebuilt title car. Also if you can get insurance what happens if you get into accident is insurance company won’t cover the vehicle damages just your medical bills because vehicle has rebuilt title. I think at the end of the day just stay away from all bad vehicle title’s it’s a headache and stick with a clean tittle vehicle less stressful.

We bought a rebuilt title 2016 Honda CR-V EX-L with 4400 miles off a Feb 2018 eBay auction, believe it or not! We now have 35,000 miles on it. Paid $15,200 plus $550 for delivery- about 55% off retail book value. It has been a great car but with a few quirks that have needed attention. My family has a history in the auto body repair business and the cardinal rule is: DON'T PAY MUCH MORE THAN 50% ON THE DOLLAR FOR REBUILT TITLE CARS. Agreed that these days, that figure may be somewhat higher because of shortages caused by government covid shutdown policies, but I would still look for no more than 60% off retail book value if it is in perfect condition. Less if it shows damage.

You pointing out quirks of a branded title vehicle is true of any used vehicle not just a branded title one. I fix a few crashed vehicles a year for fun and to be able to drive vehicles that I wouldn't otherwise. I feel like I would rather buy a crashed repaired car because I am not going to go through the effort to fix one that has a multitude of other mechanical and electrical problems as well as the accident damage. When you go look at a clean title used car, there are always hidden problems. Never buy a flood vehicle unless you are just using them for parts.

What about a rebuilt title that has had airbags deployed. How do you ensure that the bags were replaced? If they were not replaced, obviously it wont effect the driveability of the car, but in an accident it wont have them, but there are many clean title cars that airbags fail to deploy even in heavy collision. So what is your take on a car that has no frame damage, rebuilt title and drives great, but airbags deployed in accident.

Best way to buy a salvage or rebuilt vehicle would be either if your repairing yourself or that who your buying it from know who repaired it with good documentation on what was done or there shop did the repairs and can show you what was done with pictures etc.. if it is a person selling it and it was already repaired , bring a good mechanic or body man that knows what to look for as for proper repairs .
