As a Turk who got a full UK licence recently I can say that your statement is bang on. In Turkey you need to know how to operate a car perfectly to get a licence however in UK you need to not put anyone in danger or distrupt the flow of traffic. In Turkey you would fail a test if you stall a car while in UK you would fail if you do not give way to a pedestrian on a crossing. Funny enough I asked my instructor what would happen if I were to stall a car during the test. He said you’ll start it again and move on since you don’t oppose any danger to anyone as a stationary vehicle. The main difference is in Turkey everyone is always in a rush. In UK quite the opposite.

Great video! As an American in Turkey, I can agree with all your comments about the driving conditions in Turkey 🤣 I had many of these same observations and made a video on my KZbin channel about driving in Turkey. My husband was even rear-ended once for actually stopping at a stop sign... so it's even unsafe to follow the "rules". Trudie did wonderful and I hope to build up the confidence to drive here myself. Love your videos!

Great video. I have been living (and driving) in Türkiye for 17 years. You can drive in here, no problem. Just be prepared and look ahead. You will quickly find out how people drive here. However, I don't recommend driving at night: outside of cities highways are fine but other roads can be dangerous (overtired drivers, speeding cars, slow trucks with poor lights, broken asfalt, repairs without barriers or any warning etc) and also within city limits driving at night is, in my opinion, more dangerous than during daytime as less cars are on the streets. You might think this is better, but drivers tend to not stop at all at traffic lights at times of low traffic. Furthermore, they go much faster. It is common to see accidents at cross roads in Istanbul at night, because nobody cared to slow down or give way. As mentioned in the video, don't get a car for travelling within cities or for transfers from one city to another. Public transportation is your friend. Distances can be quite large in this country, but busses are very comfortable and reliable. There are also many domestic flights. However, some destinations are hard to reach or visit by bus.

I agree with your assesment that the car is safer than motorbike especially in Türkiye. Trudie Yenge is a good driver ! 👍👏😊even with stick shift car she managed it very well ! I recommend everyone to be very careful when they drive in Türkiye.! Unfortunately the roads and the streets are full with traffic maniacs 😢Hope that much harsher punishments will be imposed on those who simply terrorize the the traffic! Almost every day innocent people die because of those maniacs! I keep watching and liking your videos with great appreciation ! Thank you Mick and Trudie ! 🙏❤

Hi Mick, prices of rent and purchasing have gone up over three times according to the US dollar. I no longer can live in Fethiye for $600/month. Last year 2023 in March I came and everything was three times higher than 2021. Rent, food, restaurant etc. was 3 times higher. It cost me $1500+ /month to live. I am from Florida and the cost is still cheaper in Fethiye but it's moving up monthly to Florida prices and cost of living in Fethiye. Turkiya old days are gone. I miss Turkiya but it's too expensive for me to live and it's cheaper to live here in Florida if the prices continue to go higher in Fethiye. 😢

WOW!! Congratulations to Trudy!! THIS is the very 1st video EVER where I had to take an anxiety pill just to make it through the video. I hate sitting in the backseat.😉 I LOVE driving in Turkiye, especially motorcycles! For bikes there seems to be very little laws enforced. For cars however, up here on the west coast they very much use the EDS speed cameras, as I've gotten 5 tickets since buying our car 2 months ago. Hopefully I've learned my lesson. Excellent video!! I actually appreciate how Turks drive here....but if I were to drive in the USA like most drive here you'd get ticketed for "agressive driving" but here it works.

As a turk who lives and drives in UK, I can clearly state that in Turkey, it is okay to be careful about stop signs, ligts etc. But the main difference is, people in Turkey drive by their natural insticts, not with their brains. So, ALWAYS be careful, check every corner and especially, dont speed up when you are not in motorways. Just like you experienced, do not expect people to give you way, signs or sth like that. Everybody is in rush and one last thing is, places like Fethiye or any kind of rural parts of Turkey, it is much more easier compared to main cities like Ankara, Istanbul, Izmir etc. As a foreigner, especially if you are a tourist for a week, do not even try to drive in main cities! The main idea there is, we the drivers are the rules so we decide, not the traffic lights, one way streets' directions, etc. I said a lot of bad things here, but I dunno, maybe its in our blood. Thats the joy for us, the style, the uncertainity on the road etc, a different kind of an anarchy :)

Great video! Although, Tourists should be careful speeding. In Jan 2023 I got a speeding fine in Dalyan from a mobile police check! I paid almost 1800tl (I think it is more now) Thankfully it is just an administrative fine you receive (no points on your licence). But you should still be mindful of speed and road etiquette, even if the locals aren't! 😊

Panic yapma! I can relate to many of your sentiments while driving in Turkey. I always hire a 100cc moped when I go to Bodrum, Kusadasi, Marmaris Antalya and Calis Beach. In fact I rent my moped from Bronco Rentals in Calis Beach. Have done so the last 5 trips to Fethiye. Love getting about on the moped traveling to Hisonru Oludeniz etc .The moped gives me so much freedom. You're right about the lack of common sense at roundabouts, traffic lights and zebra crossings etc but you do get use to it. What is strange about driving in Turkey in the constant BEEP BEEP BEEP from other drivers. If this happened in the UK everyone would be fighting each other with road rage. For some bizarre reason constant beeping of your horn in Turkey is acceptable and normal.

Mind you, roundabouts in Britain have become a nightmare as they have increasingly become bigger and bigger (huge "gyratories"). The problem with huge ones is drivers are not forced to slow down as they approach and enter them (as they are with small ones). It then becomes very difficult to enter a busy roundabout if the traffic already on it (or entering from the entrance to the right of you) is hurtling along full tilt. Hence the next stage... gyratories with added traffic lights. This obviates the aforementioned problem, but kinda defeats the purpose of the roundabout in the first place (keep traffic flowing, merge cars fairly). I find these huge ones aggressive, unpleasant things. There is something to be said for all-way stop intersections, sometimes called four-way stops, which work well in calming traffic and fairly merging cars. Don't even get me started on signalling right at a roundabout (read left for Turkiye). This is barmy but is something that the driving instructor industry has convinced almost everyone younger than 60 is correct.

I've been saying it for years they need Give way lines on all side roads. However, the problem is there's not enforcement like we have in UK with CCTV everywhere. I've noticed round my way they have put in quite a few speed humps at the end of roads so cars have to slow down. By the way I thought Trudy drove that car very well indeed, I never drove again after I came here in 2007 as I was too scared and lost my confidence. You say about the tests not being hard enough here but they also pay off inspectors to get a pass, or they used to. I've got so scared I will only sit in the back seat of our car when my husband drives as I'm a nervous wreck, especially on big roads 😱

Very interesting (and fun !) Video. Well done, Mick & Trudie. I have never actually understood the rules at roundabouts in Turkiye as NOBODY ever seem to give way, despite the signage. I might attempt to drive a car in a small town or the countryside, but NOT in Istanbul where the driving is just insane !! 😂😂 Yes, jumping red lights is commonplace but on my last visit to Istanbul, drivers are starting to give way to pedestrians at zebra crossings but it seems to be a "work in progress." 😂😂 Very good advice about motor-cycle riding though and do NOT attempt to ride one unless you are an experienced rider, and have a motor-cycle licence !!! Yes, that would make an interesting video. I do know that mobile phones are far more expensive in Turkiye, than in the UK. At present, it costs 20,000 Lira to register a foreign phone in Turkiye, but it is quite a complicated process to do so. If you bring a phone from the UK to Turkiye and do not register it, it gets blocked after about 4 months but you can still use it connected to WiFi and, of course, it can be used again when you return to the UK.

Another solution to this problem for the long term stayer in Turkiye is obviously to buy a phone in Turkiye. It is dangerous to stop in zebra crossings uncle mick. The car behind you generally does not expect that. Worse, another car behind you would just ran into the people you just gave way. We lost a family friend exactly that way. So I generally stop in zebra crossings when there is no car behind me.

Honestly there are very few areas I would want to drive in Türkiye and prefer to let others drive - like a taxi or hired car! LOL ANd people on motorbikes! I don’t know how more don’t die!

Give way to traffic style roundabouts are rare in Türkiye , I only know 2 in fethiye and a few in Istanbul. Most you have to look for stop signs as you come up to the roundabout and on the roundabout also like you said also traffic lights are common on roundabouts. But I could not live without a car here mainly because we live in seki and also just love driving here especially when out of town

Hi Mick and Trudie, enjoyed the video’s especially about driving in Turkey. One question, if you don’t have insurance what happens if you have an accident or someone gets hurt. 😮

It would have to go to court to find out who was responsible which could take years then the responsible person would have to pay for any damage or hospital fees 🙈🤠

Just seen another accident on way back on dolmus from calis. I scooter on floor and ambulance in attendance. Wife and i gave up driving when we came here we use the Dolmus, cycle on the back roads as much as poss or taxis safer in general. helmets optional ahahaha. Also dont you have to sort out your UK driving licence if a resident? It was 6 months then you had to leave country is that still going on? Bet you was in dog house after Trudie saw this. liberal use of the horn as well to warn people coming out of junctions. love Mick he is exactly like me not a great passenger. Women and directions dont go together!!!!

Mick, i was always taught that roundabouts were different in Türkiye in such those coming onto the round about have the right of way and not those on it like in the UK? Has that changed now then or had i been told wrong years ago?
