Being an American myself I had an opportunity to travel through Europe which included a week in Croatia. I can say, without a shadow of a doubt, that this is the most secure place that I ever had the chance to visit. There are no forbidden areas one can't enter. You can basically walk through any part of the city in any time of the day or night. Even in their largest city and capital Zagreb. Given that it's a fairly large city with metro population of around 1 million, it's still order of magnitude safer that similar sized cities in the North America, like Baltimore, Seattle , Denver, Boston, Portland, Las Vegas, etc... You won't believe that that kind of security is possible and you will either ask WTF is wrong with us or simply move your ass here..

We spent 1 month all over Croatia in 2018, driving all the way, booking accomodation on the fly, from Istria to Zagreb and across to Hungary. All the way down the Dalmatian coast to Montenegro. We are from Sydney Australia and did this with 2 kids. Our experience was that Croatia is very safe, never once did we have an issue. The roads are relatively good, the people friendly and accommodating and even in the most touristy areas we never once were ripped off or overcharged for anything. We travelled all through Europe that trip and I could honestly say, Croatia is probably the country we felt safest in even though we did not know the language. As for the sea urchins.......yes agree they are probably the most dangerous thing you will encounter, invest in a pair of reef shoes and problem solved.

When we first moved to Europe in January 2017 we lived in Zagreb for two months. I never once felt in any danger walking to Croatian lessons or the gym after dark. My wife walked alone after dark to her lessons and felt the same way. You would not do that in the center of a large American city. And, I must also add, we felt the same way walking together at night during the time we lived in Beograd.

@@eduardjuretic36 it was the greatest surprise we've ever encountered on a number of fronts! First, the history and beautifully maintained medieval cities peppered throughout the country made us feel we were in a fairy tail. The water was the clearest I've ever seen. The food was great everywhere, even the simplest fair. We felt safe everywhere we went, and it seemed everyone had their place in society. But most of all, we were made to feel very welcome at every corner and turn. People didn't gush or make a big deal over is, but we felt that we were home. And all the extra little things waiters and hotel owners and shop owners did for us caused us to call everyone family. I love the hidden gem called Croatia. It'll forever be our home away from home!

Also on sandy beaches, be careful not to step on spider-fish (riba pauk). It has a poisonous spine on it's dorsal fin. They can really be poisonous, and usually fishermen are stung, ending up in the hospital. If untreated you can die. But on crowdy beaches they are usually absent (in deeper water).
@ProIvanPro
@ProIvanPro 3 жыл бұрын
All you have to do put something really hot next to where you got stung, either put your hand in hot water, or just use a lighter and hover around your hand as long as you can. Poison cant stand the heat, First time i got stung as a kid i didnt know this and yea it got pretty bad until i reached hospital and then they just put my hand in very hot water and it was done in few minutes. But becouse i was late to go to hospital my hand is now 15 years later still little bit swollen and bigger than the other one.

We used to get the spikes out with tweezers when we were kids. It was a normal thing. I was once running on the beach as a kid and landed with both feet in a kid-made pool filled with sea urchins. Took me hours and days to get them all out :D Fun times

There is one simple way to remove them - use those sticky depilation gel. Somebody once told me about that but I didn't pay much attention, but when I accidentally stepped on one (I slipped from the rock I was standing on), I had opportunity to try. It worked perfectly. Just don't rip off fast (like during depilation, but slowly) and it should all comes out. Anyway, if you are in the situation, you can try that as well...

There is no ghettos, no-go zones, no terrorists, women can walk alone at any time of day or night where ever she like... There's a reason for that, just like in the rest central and east Europe, but we'll skip that. Biggest problem is if you step on a tiny animal in the sea :D

Here are some first hand tips from the local resident, i will be realistic and critical instead of patriotic. 1. I am 15 years in renting business on coastal croatia, and i never heard about a single situation of pickpocketing. 2. Sea urchins wouldnt be there if the sea wasnt clean. 3. Taxis arent expensive, taxies mostly have flat rate for anywhere in city. While i was in dubrovnik few years ago, it was 8 euros, today its maybe 10 euros. But thats wasted money anyways, since all touristy cities are literally miniature and with the todays traffic, you are most likely get faster with your feet than with a taxi haha. 4. Ticks are mostly spread out in the spring, never saw a tick in the middle of the summer. But snakes are the one that you should avoid. Do not try to panic or to suck out the snake's poison, do not try to trail/hike in the flip-flops. 5. Tap water is tastier in croatia than bottled water. At some places, tap water is higher in PH and minerals than bottled water, due to ZERO factories. Croatia's economy is oriented in service, not in the production, so everything is visitable due to nonexisting pollution. 6. Mines are much bigger problem. Most of the areas that are cleaned, are our own mines, and not the serbian ones haha. We dont really know where theirs are haha. We are not two friendly nations so they do not want to inform us where are the mines haha. So yea, dont be reckless and brave, there is no need to lose your life or your legs, stick to the road. 7. Sailing is great, do not be afraid of northeast wind called "bura", bura's season ends in month of may and thats when the tourist sailing starts, due to weaker and preferable wind. In the summer, you should be careful of the true northen wind called "tramuntana", wich creates big waves that are untameable for tourists, but great and beautiful for the advanced sailors. One more thing to avoid at all costs, is the sailing on the slowly bubling south wind called "jugo". It is dangerous, cuz in few hours you will find yourself in jugo's storm thats called "nevera", wich can and will result with wrecking your boat to the rocks on the shore and losing your and your crews life. You will have the feeling like the sea is moving really fast in its own ways under the boat. So rather follow the weather prognossis, to dodge the risks.
@FrankDTank-lf4dq
@FrankDTank-lf4dq 2 жыл бұрын
I love your videos but just wanted to add that "bura" is a specific wind that blows from the coast out to sea. It is cold and the sea is always colder after bura. "Jugo", which blows from the south, or along the coast is regarded as more dangerous.

Sara, for sailors is NEVERA more dangerous then bura and it comes suddenly during the summer. I suppose that all sailors know about site with sea weather information. Those who don´t use it just have to follow all bigger boats when they are all sailing to the same place. Though, I heard turists with small boats say that something is happening somewhere when all boats are sailing to the same place. No, it is nevera coming, try to find sure place as soon as possible because it can take only 20 minutes before the storm from hell begins.

@zorkan111

Actually, poskok is the most poisonous European snake and can be deadly if you don't act on time and they live around some of the popular Croatian hiking trails. They stay clear of people though and you have to be really really unlucky to get into a situation where they'll decide to bite you instead of running away.

I know you're trying with all of your heart to present yourself as a Canadian. Thing is that you look like a 100% ethnical Croat. You have some facial features that some female family members of mine have, and I'm Serbian. Or you belong to some other Slavic ethnicity? Peace n love from a Serb.

You know Europeans emigrated to Canada so they're also white there? White people in general share similar facial features. Same way black or Asian people do. It's only natural she looks similar to someone you know. She's Canadian. There's no hidden agenda here. Stop being paranoid.

One of the dangers in Croatia that wasn't mentioned in the video - it's full of simple minded people like these two. Advice for travelers - whenever one of the local people starts mentioning a persons nationality or events that happened 3 decades ago, just give that person a wide berth.

Why in the world do you even ask that question? The question itself obviously makes people insecure and many will believe that there is an underlying reason for asking the question. Would you ask the same thing about eg Austria? Croatia is one of the safest countries in the world and there is no reason at all to even pose the question whether the country is safe.

Just to add, a few years ago I stumbled on a website about country safety which it turned out was done by the American CIA and it said Croatia was one of the safest countries to be in and also to point out, certainly in my area of Dalmacija, single line women still hitchhike to and from work completely safely. The only crime I’ve noticed that has increased over the years is robberies of banks, post offices and shops, but this is still rare and obviously doesn’t affect the individual tourist. As Sarah said DEFINITELY agree price in the taxi before, certainly in Dalmacija some will charge you double if they think you’re green, maybe get a local to order for you whether that be the Konobar in the restaurant to go home or someone at your accommodation so you can go out, and actually don’t dismiss local buses 🚍, they’re cheap and clean but usually don’t work much past 23:30
