Man this video hits so hard right now. I started learning how to code last September and then did a bootcamp in Feb and just landed a $115k fully remote salary. 80% of the people I spoke too told me that this was too risky or wouldn’t work and all I saw on Reddit and Social media was doom and gloom. I knew the entire time that it I just ignore the noise and focus on becoming a great software engineer that I would make it happen.

I'm excited to share that I've recently reignited my interest for coding. I graduated with an IT degree in 2015, but I have never had the opportunity to work in an IT-related job because I have always struggled in interviews. I've been coding again since June, and I'm making some progress. I am determined to succeed this time, and I will come back to this comment when I have achieved my goal. Wish me luck! In the meantime, I wish you all the best in your own endeavors.

I am studying web development, and I have thought about quitting several times over the course of this year alone. It isn't that learning to code is hard (it is, but in my opinion there are harder skills out there to learn.) it is more that I am afraid that by the time I am job ready, demand will be reduced by automation and that I will struggle to find a job. I am afraid that all this time and effort I am putting in will ultimately amount to nothing.

Boy I REMEMBER finding your video some 5 years ago now. I remember watching your very first video. I did self taught for YEARS. The desire, the insecurity, the quitting. Something clicked a year ago and I went to work. I LOVE programming. I wake up every day excited about what I'm going to build next. I started a full stack bootcamp (the best one I could find) for the mentorship and community. And honestly its been a miracle to code/learn for 12 hours a day. The salary never motivated me. The coffee, the cozy lifestyle, nothing did it. Only the passion did it. I know the market BLOWS, and I'm not gonna lie, I'm scared as hell about it. No amount of passion will ever feed my family. But I also know I love this way too much to ever give up. I also know that once I do land that first job, I'm going to be on my knees thanking you for all you've done over the years to keep me going just one more day until it clicked.

Just came across your channel, I am young student about to commence my Computer science degree as a freshman, and I was initially heading into Psychology and then wanted to specialize in Sports Psychology. However I realized that wasn't really my thing and I began to research and try new things and nothing interested me more than coding and I've begun in FreeCodeCamp to have at least a background on the basics and I do see how I may end up thinking of not continuing , but to anyone reading this. The good things in life take time to flourish and trust me in this field things will improve and change overtime, but you have to be confident in yourself and your skills, you cant let the opinions of others dictate your future. You must make your own future, ill come back to this in one year and see how it's gone. Thank you Chris for the message :)

After covid hit, healthcare isn't the same and I'm very unhappy. I really like the idea of working remotely and getting into coding. My hospital actually partnered with Guild, who organizes with schools to help people earn certificates or degrees and software development is fully covered. I'll be working full time night shifts so I want a structured way to learn and pace myself. Hopefully end of next year, I'll be able to fully transition into tech. I'll be following you for guidance! I was on route to become a teacher but decided I could't deal with it anymore after being a substitute teacher for 6 and a half years (especially after 2020, things became unbearable). Nothing else has worked out for me but I have decided to give tech a try. So far I really like it and I am praying it all works out. I've read some doom and gloom stories and people speculating that front-end developers are done but I refuse to believe that. I'm planning on having back-up plans for other areas of tech but I'm going to give this my best shot for now! This video is even more motivating. Thanks again!

You're one of my biggest inspirations, Chris. Edward Sa introduced me to the coding world, and you introduced me to the life-changing benefits. The thing that discourages me the most is the fact that I live in a third world country with terrible pay and low demand for developers. But I figured time is gonna pass anyway. As long as I believe that AI won't replace me, I will try to keep moving forward and move from a barely HTML/CSS literate guy to a fully-fledged Front-End Developer (with the eventual goal to become Full-stack). Maybe I will be able to get a remote job from a different country, I very much hope so.Thanks you for your words. If I ever become a developer, I'll credit you two for it.

I started developing interest at the beginning of the year but didnt really start practicing rgiously until just a few months ago (the layoff scared me, too) after talking to some friends in this industry. All i gotta say is that all my eggs are in this basket, and hopefully a year or so from now my family and I can have a better life. I had the same problem but once you keep doing it everyday it will be easy if you stop for a few days and it will just get harder The best to do is take only one day off now learning tailwind and vite with react seem really easy now

It’s good that so many ppl are quoting learning to code, because those who will hang in longer and won’t give up, will have so many more options and it will be so much easier to get a job.

I think my happy medium is WGU BS in SWE, it’s cheaper, online and accredited. I’m going to try to accelerate through it by focusing full time. I’m pivoting from being in CA Gas & Electric industry. When others are fearful be greedy. Telling myself no matter what the skill set will be a payoff more than worth it.

I keep asking myself why I decided to learn how to be a software developer at this time in my life (age 57) and wondering who will even want to hire me. I guess only time will tell. I do intend to do my own thing too but the doubt is real some days. Thank you, for these insights. I am hungry :)

In my early 40's, I decided to make a career change and went back to school to study web development. After doing some coursework through a community college and then completing an online coding school, I began my job search. Then came five frustrating months of applying for any entry-level web developer job I came across, but I would either get no response or manage to get an interview but then would usually get ghosted by the employer. Finally, I managed to land a developer job with a school photography company, yet even that didn't turn out well. They only paid $18 an hour, often expected me to do work that was too advanced for me, and then bounced me around from one completely different kind of task to another. They would want me to do React, then create something in WordPress, then do something in PHP -- thus keeping me always rushing to learn things by the seat of my pants and not actually develop serious proficiency in any one area. I felt like my head was spinning at times. Then after I'd been there only about a year and a half, they suddenly kicked me to curb, basically saying that they didn't have much work that matched my skill level. (Instead, they hired some much younger coders who were far more experienced than I was.) That was over 4 months ago. I've struggled with whether I should even try to do coding anymore. I keep wondering if it's really a young person's game and that now my age will be held against me in the job market (I'm 48 now). Part of me wants to stay with coding but take it in a different direction. Another part of me wants to build on the kind of tasks I did before, such as JavaScript and/or PHP. Any advice for a very discouraged, nontraditional (i.e., older) coder such as me? 😞

keep at it seriously, you cannot give up, go forward torward getting your degree in CS AND doing internships with companie like Microsoft or IBM which helps people like us get into the game (im 50) with programs like leafspring Also learn python, C+++ react and the such. it doesnt matter the age, also build up your resume with freelance or volunteer work a few will do. This works out due to the fact i am in leafspring and im currently negotiationg my first offer. its possible, it took me 1-2 years it can be longer but again its MORE possible than my previous career of early childhood education.

@@ps.6023do I necessarily need a degree in computer science? Can’t I just major in IT for web development? It’s because I’m not good at math at all and I heard IT is less math related

I love this! I've been discouraged since I'm 40-ish, but I don't care. I see the potential of a tech career and I'm determined!! I know I may not get hired as a junior developer because of my age, but I plan to learn anyway. Maybe I can freelance!

I am starting a study in September for 6 months to become a front-end developer. Although I read and see all this AI scare all around me, I believe we are all needed in the coming years. We are at the beginning of a new wave, like there has been many other waves in tech through the years. Just learn to balance on that surfboard, work on your abs and posture, do some yoga and you”ll be alright 😄
