Jack up the front end, remove reservoir cap, turn steering wheel all the way to the right and left with engine off, keep doing it till there is no more air in the line. You can have someone, or camera on phone if everyone hates you, watch the res and tell you when it stops bubbling air out. If you ran it dry for too long, the gears inside the pump are shotski.

Can you drive with it making noise ?
@klubstompers9 ай бұрын
@@intensivemanagement yea, but it could really mess up your vehicles steering components, and become very dangerous because the difference in oil pressure can make your power steering intermittant. Besides your pump it could destroy your steering rack, since it might not be getting proper lubrication. Id just be very careful if driving with this issue and hold the wheel very tight, incase you lose PS while turning.

If the pump is grenading internally, like clearances shot out and you've got metal fragments going around in there, you may need an entire power steering system with a new pump, new hoses, and a steering gearbox/rack and pinion unit. If it uses an external fluid cooler you need to thoroughly flush it out with solvent and compressed air. Might not hurt to check the price of a new cooler, it may not be that expensive. Also, get a power steering filter. They don't cost much and connect inline on the low-pressure return hose. The better ones use both a fine screen and a magnet 🧲 inside them. In hydraulic systems, the slightest amount of foreign material in the fluid can be catastrophic. Because of high pressures and next to zero clearances in the system components. There's no room for a piece of dirt or metal to go through the system and it tears things up compounding the issue with more fragments. Good automatic transmission techs use a lint-free cloth to wipe down parts before reassembly.

get a screwdriver place one end on any metal surface of the pump and place your ear on top of the handle you should be able to tell which one is loudest when you compare the pump and alternator, I use a lever bar which has a metal surface on the end even a long 1/2inc extension bar would work :)
