I finally got a pair of Cornwall IV’s! For the first few days I was feeling that they were fine, but not a long term keeper. THEN I raised them up. I put a pair of 2x4s under them and the definition improved. I finally settled on 4x4s which raise them up 3.5” and that did 3 things. Improved midrange clarity. Gave me a higher soundstage. And most importantly, decongested the low end. With the two 4x4s, it gets the speaker off the floor and IMO allows the LF pressure to wrap around the bottom of the speaker, and it sounds less boxy. These inexpensive “stands” changed my Cornwalls from sleepers to keepers!

I enjoyed this episode immensely and enjoyed Andrew's subjective descriptions regarding comparing various Wharfedale speakers. My first pair of large speakers were purportedly designed by Wharfedale. It wasn't until years later that I was able to compare them to a pair of genuine Wharfedales in the early 1980s that I found that the salesman knew what he was talking about! Keep up the great work, both of you!

Hi Andrew and Kristi. Loved "the dip" discussion. Peter Comeau, the great speaker designer for Wharfedale, Mission, etc., clearly is known for tuning his speakers by ear rather than strictly by measurement. Clearly he would be aware of the dip, but obviously feels it "sounds" better as he intended with the dip, the dip complainers be damned. Peter's work speaks for itself. Looking forward to Sunday, Thanks again for all your hard work. Just for the record, I watched and loved the Arcam review. Makes me sad that lack of interest from the majority will likely limit such reviews going forward.
@andrewrobinsonreviews5 ай бұрын
I think measurements take you so far, but then it's up to personal preference and gut feeling-at least from a design perspective. If you rely 100% on measurements, in my experience, you end up with a boring-ass speaker.
@JustinRoby93115 ай бұрын
@@andrewrobinsonreviews and @user-ej3ii8zm2b - I just listened to a really interesting podcast that John Darko did with Peter Comeau (busting "Hi Fi Myths" from some time last year), and there is a discussion of a "dip" in what's called the "presence region" that was specifically engineered into BBC speaker designs in order to make vocals less in your face when in a near-field monitoring situation, (in the early days of radio and TV: especially mixing live in a van outfitted with recording gear). Comeau basically says that the "depth" in a stereo image is an illusion created by the influence of that dip that has arisen in later designs from designers who were influenced by the BBC monitor designs. In that podcast, he also explained that he tunes by ear but uses measurements to figure out what he's hearing so he can find a solution to the problem.

I was confounded by the recent announcement of the Super Denton, as I'd JUST augmented my office system's Denton 85s with a little REL sub, after which my wife and I agreed they sounded better than the Lintons in our main setup -- it's a really great pairing that I doubt you could get from a single box speaker of such small size (I'd still love to hear the Super Dentons). Incidentally, in my experience all the Wharfedale heritage models need more power than the specs imply (my Dentons run on a Rega Elex-R, 90W into 6 ohms). Fantastic speakers all around for us "normal folks" who are skeptical of audiophiles but want our records to sound great.

The observation at about 21:30 which says in effect that these are speakers you can just listen to and be happy matches my experience. I got these to get a somewhat Linton like sound in a smaller room (I have Lintons in a bigger room in my house but their bass would overload my smaller office). And for me they delivered. I wasn't looking for something to do super critical listening with, but I do want to play music a lot and enjoy it - including in the background. Yes you need to toe in to fit your room and listening position - like very many speakers - and, yes, I prefer grills on with these (but not with say, Elac DBR62s). You also have to like the retro look. But if you are looking for this kind of sound and style, they are rather good. And yes indeed. These are not mini Lintons. They are though for a smaller room which I find a Linton will overload.
@carminedesanto67465 ай бұрын
Good afternoon from Toronto ☕️ I’ve always been a proponent of fix the room ( yes, I watched your videos when you did the main room at your place) and it generally fixes the speaker ( along with proper placement and power) 😎 Have a great weekend.

Speaker measurements usually doesn't show how it will sound like. A flat measuring speaker only shows that it sounds accurate and sometimes it might not sound good. Speaker sounding good is usually a combination of various factors. For example crossover parts. Various capacitors will sound different depending on their quality. Speaker cone material and stiffness also affect its sound. Stiff cones e.g. aluminum will mostly have a forward detailed midrange while soft cones e.g. paper cones will sound laid back. Same with tweeter dome materials. Speaker drivers' motor structure will also affect how the overall speakers will sound like.
@abxaudiophiles5 ай бұрын
Well said, Rob. Although it can help us know how it will "likely" sound, for example, bumped-up mids, rolled-off treble, high or low bass shelf, etc. Measurements are just part of the equation and a good guide, but they are not the whole picture. And all the stuff you mentioned as well-:) Cheers.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for doing this! I see so many systems which have stupid amounts of money invested (usually Mac and B&W gear for some reason) with catastrophically poor setup. The speakers will be flat against the front wall or worse- all the way out against the side walls.
@andrewrobinsonreviews5 ай бұрын
Glad you enjoyed the video, please keep in mind it is impossible to completely judge a person's setup purely off of an image. Without dimensions and their subjective feelings on what they're hearing it's virtually impossible to know if a setup is bad or good. Just because a speaker is up against the wall doesn't automatically mean it's going to sound bad. Just because a speaker is near a corner, doesn't always mean it's going to be bad or boomy.

@@andrewrobinsonreviews you are obviously correct, of course: it’s possible that a system could sound good regardless of the speaker placement. It was more of a generalization and you kinda mentioned the same when you outlined why you measure the right speaker and not the left one: the left one is colored by the room more than the right due to the corner. That “colorization” and soundstage smearing from early reflections is typically more pronounced the closer the speakers (or the listening position) is to a wall or a bookshelf or whatnot. I guess it doesn’t mean it’ll sound “bad” per se, but….

Happy to see that you mentioned my comment on the unplugged show, a sincere thank you. I thought, price wise, the comparison to the Focal Vestia 1 was a fair one, same price. It is quite clear that you both are not fan of such speaker. The sound is, more often than not, a personal preference but I strongly disagree on the looks and built quality which are excellent, at least to my eyes. Finally, a comparison to the Heresy IV is unfair because those Klipsch, at 3 times the price, are in a league of their own.

Good morning K&A, since watching and/or listening to the vast majority of your yt reviews (and, of course, these wonderful Unplugged commenting on comments vids of late) there are 2 questions that I keep wondering about. 1. Do you guys have a room in your house that's like a speaker 'graveyard', where you store all those speakers that you don't sell or ship back to the manufacturers? Something similar to that room with the Martin Logan's from that Asian family all those years ago? And 2. Is(/was) Carl a real person? Genuine curiosity, not being facetious. Also - and again - thank you both for taking the time and spending the energy to test and properly and honestly review all the equipment for all of us that do not have the means (i.e. time, money, graveyard rooms, etc.) to do it so extensively as you do! I'm sure I speak for a lot (A LOT!) of people when I say that you've helped me make a much better choice on what to invest in to get a much better listening and viewing experience in my own home, than I would have had if I had to figure it all out for myself! Have a wonderful weekend and I can't wait for tomorrow's review! Much love from Holland

Wharfdale, they have been around a long time, harking back to the era of great British Hi-Fi brands. Everyone started with a pair of Dentons, then made the mistake of pairing them with a rubbish Amstrad amp, so you upgraded them to the Lintons, and if anything it sounded worse. Thankfully word got around that you need a decent amp to drive any speaker, getting ther right combination is an art that we are still chasing today. Then along came Q Acoustics and compared to my Dentons they are far better, others may think otherwise even with them you want the originals not the newer "i" variants, perhaps the same goes for the Dentons ?

Do same method with flash light, as it better represents how sound works, not with a laser pointer.

That's fair. I used a flashlight with my old MartinLogans back in the day.

@Gman10445 ай бұрын
What on earth does that mean?
@paulf.52615 ай бұрын
@@Gman1044 Hey Gman. It refers to comments made about the tweeter and the difference having the grills on makes to soften it a bit. From what I gathered, the other drivers sounded fine without the grills on. So I thought maybe they only need small grills for the tweeters! Hope this alleviates any confusion 😁🙏

It is so hard to pick just ONE. If I had to, it would probably be salsa straight up. If you have never tried Papalote Mexican Grill salsa (sold at Whole Foods), you probably haven't met your favorite salsa. The Chipotle flavor is TDF. This flavor is also 👩🏻🍳 amzn.to/3L0u3V3. I'm surprised no one has mentioned guacamole yet. That may be my number two. I think I make the best guacamole. You must use cilantro, fresh lime, tomatoes and green onion. Oh and plenty of sea salt. Absolutely no queso fresca. You're probably a serial killer if you put that shit on guac.

@@Dehazer2112 Evo is very directional and needs to be pointed right at your ears. Denton 85 is indeed too bright but the treble can be tamed by replacing one of the brass speaker links with a 2 Ohm 10W resistor.

"not audible" coming from People that work on that kinda stuff. Well yeah maybe, but that doesnt mean they know what they re doing. Alot of those Systems are kinda bad when u listen to them so i wouldnt take them as a guranteed right. There are very well things that are not audible, but i want to decide that for myself what i think is important and whatnot, not what someone says that i have no way of validating how much he really knows. Someone works in a supermarket and can be oblivious to what exactly is in my food. Same there ... i think the "professional" badge is taken to seriously often. If what ur saying is correct, then it is correct, no matter what ur occupation says about it.
