This is why I watch your videos. It's easy to be sucked into the romance of HGV driving as you guys make it look exactly how we outsiders imagine it. To have the rough with the smooth is vital and more important to us potential drivers than you probably realise. I for one appreciate the honesty of this vlog. I can now sit and work out the financial "what if's" should lower than expected hours ever happen to me. It's disheartening for you but you have taught a lot of us what to expect on a bad week. I applaud that and thanks for sharing valuable info and experience. Top, top vlogger. All the very best Martyn.
@gegwen74405 жыл бұрын
There is nothing remotely romantic about driving a HGV these days (if there ever was ?) As you can see from this vlog the lad has to work excessive hours to even earn enough to pay the bills & he could earn more for less hours in a supermarket with better conditions / benefits and be home every night. Again as you can see from this vlog he has to sit in the saddle for hours on end (a lot of them) and then has to cook & eat in the same space day after day. Christ he doesn't even get a good vehicle like a 143 Scania and has to put up with a fleet Merc. Unless you can get a job on a company doing own account and/or a niche market that have a guaranteed rates of pay inc holidays/sick/pension (think PO / etc)

Hello Martyn woooww a cheeky part 2 what a treat, you are a great advert for new blood coming into the industry, you say it as it is, so people looking in from the outside of the industry get an honest view of what life in the road is like ,i for one really miss being on the road all week having given it up to be a supermarket trolly driver cos the family came along, at the moment yourself and the other legends help me get my fix ,.keep the top vlogs coming and safe travels, from your number one fan (possibly)

Class 2 work is hard graft involving multidrop but in the food industry it's salaried ( 48hrs guaranteed between 32 and 36 thousand per year ) and you get home in the afternoon with an early start - but usually have to work every other Saturday. Russel Worthing might be right when he said Keedwell only have three of the original drivers from thirty-three because of one bad egg joining the management team a few years ago ...

Hi Martyn, Have you thought about Supermarket work. Are there any RDC's within travelling distance. Yes the work can be boring but it's well paid, salaried and 9 times out of 10 you are on a rota so can plan your life. I suppose the only downside is having to work weekends sometimes. The days of hourly pay are numbered in this industry because of the shortage of new drivers not willing to work like a dog for poor pay. Hope you make the right decision buddy. 👍.

@Narrow Boat looking at some of the hourly rates where I live, slave Labour has already started. If you go into a salaried job with your eyes open and work out the hourly rate based on maximum hours , you wìll know if it's good or bad. At least if you get short days you still get the same pay. 🤔

Hi Martin. I feel and understand your pain. Before you do something regrettable. Think hard. Frying pan to fire springs to mind. We are all working to keep the system going. Never worked on a Hourly rate. But get your point wholly. It shouldn't be down to how many hrs you drove for, more worked and what you were available. Put it into contrast of some emergency services. They sit around over 50% + of the time, but still get paid. If you loosing out financially, Which you are, their needs to be a retainer rate brought in. To protect drivers relying on long weeks to make a living. It's sad in the 21st century. People have to work 55/60 hr weeks. Just to get a reasonable standard of living. Sorry if this is turning into a rant. Drive safe Martin, love to Claire. 🚛🌬️

Nice Video! And who says you haven't put "the word" out yet - there are recruiters who watch this channel ;) I think you have to decide what your priority is. If you put the human - Claire & family first - then see how the new hours work out for the first month before making a decision. That alone suggests you are willing to accept fewer hours for the right working environment, ie: better/predicatble family time. Truckers are short numbered in the industry, but then due to Brexit so is work (at present). Lots of jobs - for far worse companies than Keedwell's - but there's a big seasonal dip in work also at present. Work the new schedule, and suggest you review in a month - Good Luck!

I hate parking up for so many hours and always feel that when you get a surprise night at home during week bosses always say just have your 9 off,but they expect you to be away down the road taking 15 off haha I wouldn't stand for that.Find something else will do you a world of good,chill out it will all come good pal I'm sure! Hi Martyn, if the work's not there, you can't do it! I gave up trucking because a I didn't want to work 13/15 hour days and took up taxi driving, only 9 hours a day usually but I can work as long as I like. Bad news is, if nobody wants a cab, you sit around earning absolutely nothing! Finally, most companies will only guarantee 50 hours a week and you're only supposed to average 48 hours a week over 17/26 weeks as per WTD. Keep up the good vlogs mate. 👍
@trucktasticsussex81835 жыл бұрын
Working long hours is bad for our health. A recent study has shown that long days of 10 hours or more increase our risk of stroke, adding another black mark to the list of issues already associated with failing to switch off, such as poor mental health and weight gain. Britons have a longer working week than anyone else in the European Union, clocking up 42.3 hours per week on average. Bond University assistant professor Libby Sander points to concerns around automation, slow wage growth, and increasing underemployment.

so, i've been driving for 20 years, and I always kept a 15 for friday (and normally tried to keep a 10hr drive too) to make sure for my benefit, that I could get home without going into saturday.... In october, I was asked to come into the planning office, and my eyes were opened, and you nailed it straight away .. why do drivers think that industry stops on a friday ? they want to work max shifts monday to thursday, but then want minimum on fridays ? the economy doesn't work like that, the wheels of industry turn 24/7, yet drivers seem to think that friday is their day, and should consist of doing minimum work, and running home ... It doesn't make sense to me, I can't see the logic ? Well presented video though, hope it works out for you...

Hi Jenko I know how you feel, but if you moved to another company would it be any better, sounds like the office needs to have people in it who understands what it's like to be a driver, and what thew need,. I understand your frustration at the lack of hours but also the company can't be happy with a truck sitting in a truck stop when it should be on the road earning you both money.
