When is it time to quit your job and become your own boss? What makes someone create a business? The perception of entrepreneurship and startups portrayed on social media, magazines, and news is that disruptive, young people are dominating the business world. The reality is most businesses are pretty boring and started by people in their 30s and 40s. Most businesses start because a seasoned, experienced employee wants to create change in their life.
What makes someone leave a job to create a business?
Why take on the work, risk, and stress?
Some people are just wired differently.
Some people are highly competent but unemployable.
Some people need to push themselves.
I have worked with a lot of defense and tech entrepreneurs. Smart people that have left extremely well paying jobs to go out on their own. Why?
Corporate careers have a point of diminishing returns. By the time an engineer hits senior engineer or engineering manager, smart people start to realize the next level of advancement requires getting an MBA or certifications and doing less of what made them choose engineering.
In other cases, employees spend years working on sub-systems or in focused specializations. Work becomes monotonous.
The skill acquisition and learning is low.
The feeling of impact is low.
Most people I speak with thought life was going to be different.
They started a career with the desire to do something worthwhile.
Maybe their goal was to earn big money.
Maybe their goal was to make cool stuff.
Instead of being swept under by depression, they see an opportunity.
