I think you’re one of the best gardening KZbinrs out there, with an immense amount of knowledge that’s delivered in a really entertaining way. I could be selfish and ask you not to give it up BUT it’s what is best for you Dan and you definitely don’t need to justify yourself. You must be exhausted with all you have going on but, at the end of the day, it’s prioritising the most important. You could maybe decrease the amount of videos you put out, have less regular updates if you didn’t want to let it go. Or have a break all together for a while. You’ve left an absolute library of information for us to use and I would always stay subscribed anyway. Whatever, you decide though, I hope it’s best for you and yours because that’s the most important. Good job Dan, you’re a star, and the care home that took you on have found a real gem I think 😊

Dan, please don't leave us. Thank you for sharing honestly. You are so inspirational and motivational for your community here So sad to hear about your hernia. People in the care home surely are glad for your work too. Maybe your work is underrated and underpayd. Greetings, best wishes and love from Germany. Personally with dark winter skies I have installed 5 grow lights indoors and literally live inside kinda greenhouse. For 1,5 years of my life I was a mobile carer for elderly people here in Germany and it was just relaxing to go back to the car when driving to the next patient. Over social media people found and contacted me and now I reduce some cost of living by bartering animal products for my plant products. Also I need no car because friends and neighbors enjoy driving me while I supply them with vegetables and flowers. There is many old and retired or unemployed people who love to be involved and entertained. We just need to unite.

Hi Dan, you are an inspirational gardener and can teach us so much so glad to hear you are not planning to quit KZbin in the near future. Although you can buy many vegetables relatively cheaply from the supermarket there is nothing like digging potatoes, carrots, onions etc and cooking and eating them an hour later. What a benefit it has been for you to become a trained carer early in your career and being able to combine it with your passion later in life when health problems or age mean you have to adapt. I don't think many watchers on KZbin appreciate how much cost and effort goes into a video. Poor camera or audio equipment or lack of editing will soon lose you viewers and subscribers. Good to hear you have got over the health problems and hope the new balance of caring and gardening works well for you. Thank you for the videos and may you have super crops this year! Regards Keith

Growing things is a passion that I would do no matter what! Our goal to be self reliant requires it though. Health is everything! Care givers are usually not the best self care givers so be mindful that you are important and need care to. Just found your channel when this video popped up in my feed. Love your videos so I'm glad to hear that you won't be quitting KZbin. You are so knowledgeable and your way of presenting is refreshing, I have definitely been inspired by your videos. Totally understand when you say you need to look after yourself more, I had a life changing experience with my health six years ago which made me rethink everything. I quit my job of 15 years, went from working in finance which was soul destroying to working at a doctor's surgery which I absolutely love. I started gardening mainly so that I could have homegrown food, the quality in supermarkets now just isn't there, when we were younger vegetables had so much more flavour. I soon discovered that I really enjoyed gardening, I built up a lovely garden last year but unfortunately storm ciaran hit Jersey and we lost everything in the garden, trees, vines, sheds, the whole shebang. Barely a plant survived. We did have a few months of despair but thankfully work is being done and the garden is finally getting back to a place we can plant in. I'm late with my sowings but I am so excited, really missing our homegrown salad leaves and beautiful tasty herbs. Every new start is a journey, hope you are happier too with yours and really looking forward to seeing what you do in the garden this year. Best Wishes.

You have a different perspective that is useful. Teaching others is a vital ability. Many people don’t know or understand how to garden. They think all they have to do is put a seed in the ground and they’ll get a ton of veggies, or fruit, etc. They’re misinformed, of course. Knowing how and learning how to garden is more important than buying the cheap veggies from a grocery store. One day there may not be a store where they can buy them. Where will they get the veggies then? I’ve learned the way to grow many plants and I’m still learning. But I wouldn’t have survived at the beginning if all I had was in the garden. Now, I’m not going to be overwhelmed since I have a few skills under my belt. You might be the one someone listens to and learns a new skill, etc. The choice is yours of course but I’ve been watching your channel for a long time, sometimes while not logged in. Nowadays, I log in to help you, all KZbinrs, to increase hits, etc. Keep hope even if you have to scale down. It may be for only a short while.

A very thought provoking video Dan 😊.... Pleased that you said part way through the video that you're not thinking of leaving KZbin at ths present time, as I find as a small-scale grower your growing food videos are very important. You're right about how many (not all) people are struggling financially more and more and how this is impacting on people's lives, and how people are being forced into making change in respect of both their short and long term decisions. In times as this, where people are so financially effected lots of people will turn to trying to grow some of their own food and this is when such channels as yours Dan, channels that are straightforward and easy to understand become beyond that of valuable to others in helping them understand how to go about as economically as possible finding ways to gain skills to grow food. Personally I find many of these big channels that are out there and say look at my acres of land to be of very little value for me at all, as I need to know and learn different skills and techniques from others who like me need to grow food on a small-scale basis. I'm still looking forward to you making your video on when to plant melon seeds and how 'to grow melons' as my first attempt last year was a disaster 😅... All the best 👍

I’m a new subscriber Dan. I’m terrible at gardening. I love being outdoors but I freeze when I get out there. It seems to overwhelm me. I don’t know what to prioritise at what time of year. How to process all the wood what area and how to store it. I never know what to cut how to cut, prune and reduce the mature trees in the garden. My lawns a nightmare. Thank you for your honesty and discussion of some important videos. I bet you're a brilliant carer. I like everyone else hope you keep going with KZbin, there may be many gardening channels but you fill a particular area with straightforward advice and your efforts to educate us regarding exotics (I came to your channel when researching dessert grape growing and found your information invaluable). Looking forward to this season with you, I wonder if now just having the garden you will focus on time/space efficient methods. I've been working a lot on getting the patterns of succession plantings that work in my area nailed down, so that there's always something growing in each bed year round. I'm sure many people growing in smaller areas would appreciate you looking at this.

Hi again. Just my second of your videos, so I'm happy to hear your hanging in there with YT:) Ahhh, to have an inth of your energy! Even as a young woman I could exhaust myself unknowingly. I've always admired folks who could do home, babies, job, and still fit in hobbies, or work doubly hard to jumpstart their next step. It was inspiring to hear how you worked your Care Home job to set-up your gardening venture, expanding into the world of KZbin with cameras etc.. My goodness! Back in the day, all I could do was home, kids, the odd job, and for 10years, we ran a Group Home for behaviourly challenged adults. When it was said and done, I didn't have energy to chill and socialize. But, Oh,...how I would enjoy a quiet, hot bath;0) I think it beautiful, all the juggling you're doing, and I see you especially blessed to be doing what you're loving. Niiiice:) Still, I look forward to the day, we can somehow live our lives thriving as to striving, as you mentioned. I'm 70 now, and watching the numbers of young people navigating the days with 2 and 3 jobs, atop of new stressors, well, this can't be a good thing..., and these are folks on their own. We're experiencing things we've never experienced, globally, and I welcome in the highest and best changes this great Shifting is making way for. So cheers to All, as we move as One Love ;0) Just a by-the-way, but I giggle as I consider how many times I look at something and think,....It shouldn't be this hard! At 61 I completed the 10 year charge of looking after a beauty of a human being. To be brief....I came home and flatlined, not realizing how I'd exhausted myself. Hehe, I counted a 3 year Burn-out! Anymore, embracing the mantra: No racin; just pacin', I've fallen in love with foraging. Yah, hehe, I'm addicted to Dandelion greens and amazed how resilient they are. Even in the winter, here on Vancouver Island, I can brush back snow to collect brilliant green, tender leaves. Beauty-full:) It kinda blew my mind, last summer, when they acted like they wanted to disappear. I thought, OH NO!!! hehe. Then, came to know how even weeds benefit from nurture. This Spring, my Dandy-greens are more bounty-full than ever. Now, if I can get the rest of the garden to do as well. Methinks the issue is compacted soil. Hehe, hence why I tapped into the first of your vids, to do Leaf-mold/ mould? Still, with all the work of a yard and garden, it's an amaZing playground! Thank you for being out here, with your mighty efforts, your Flow, and the support you release in your magical way, as you find balance with all those balls in the air! It's greatly appreciated, as I chime in with other comments:) 🥰

Hi Dan, As you know I’m also in the same industry, have an allotment, family and a fellow youtuber and on other social media platforms. I totally get where you are coming from as on many occasions I find myself rushing about and pushing my physical boundaries in order that everything can get done, and that in itself becomes mentally tiring! I have eased up on other social media and changed a few things that I do at the allotment and what I grow at home in order that I can manage my time better. I think that for us, KZbin is very much a hobby and a way to share information and details on our great industry that is horticulture. However, it can require quite a lot of input time and sometimes feels like hard work when already suffering fatigue. I guess my point is that you are not alone in feeling under pressure to balance, work, home and social media life. For the first time I have made a list of what videos I actually want to make for my channel, kind of giving me a more work like structure to go to. I’m not saying it will make a difference but I think the list helped me to work out what level of content is achievable with my other life commitments. Sometimes just a short break can help you to regain that energy and drive and I hope you get there and continue the KZbin journey. All the best 🌼🌸

My advice would be, take the pressure off yourself, that is when you feel like sharing a video just do it, and forget the need to make so many a week that sometimes youtube can make you regementally do. Enjoy making the videos for you first and the rest of your fans will enjoy them anyways as you have a natural presenting style. Ask yourself why did you start making them in the beginning and maybe your deep searching will lead you to the right decision :) I pray you have a full recovery. Simon

Blimey matey a Dementia Carer is very demanding for you. The mean attitude of sufferers really takes hold as Dementia gets worse - I have seen my dear old Mum that was meek, kind and friendly deteriorate into irritable, mean and abusive telling staff some pretty hard criticisms. Mum is fine with me but the unkind unfiltered comments she says to staff must be so hard for you wonderful people. Thank you for doing this job so under-paid but massively valuable to people like me who find it hard watching the deterioration but so thankful to have staff that care. Back to gardening, over the years I have learnt loads from watching you and others. Thank you.

Hi Daniel, it's a bit of a surprise to hear that you are downsizing your gardening business, but I can see why you're doing it, because physical work gets harder as you get older. That said, care work can be quite physical too, so be careful with your back. I think you've made a wise move, as gardening is very seasonal and I can imagine your income drops considerably in the winter months, just when the bills go up, so the p/t care job will give you a steady income over the winter. I think the care home will quickly learn what an asset you are to them, as you have a very calm and kind demeanour, plus male care workers are in short supply. They may well start gently pressuring you to take on more shifts than you want, so you might need to be firm on that point. Dealing with people who have dementia takes a lot of patience and empathy, but you seem to have plenty of both and I'm sure you will be very popular with the clients and their families. My father spent his final years with dementia in a care home, so this territory is horribly familiar to me. During those years he was supported by wonderful carers who also showed great kindness to me, something I was very grateful for (especially when my father mistook me for his wife - you can imagine how perturbing that was). I had to tell him white lies on a regular basis, to spare his feelings - it is such a cruel disease. Good luck, you're doing vital work.

Yes, it was. Luckily the brilliant carers made his life as tolerable as it could be, in the circumstances. After he died we gave cash to his key carers as a thank you, it was such a small gesture but they were so grateful. There are so many families affected by dementia that you might glean many viewers if you were to set up a separate channel, where you could share your experience in this field and offer advice and support to those struggling through such situations. It could provide another income stream and provide a valuable service. @@homegardens7682

Might be good idea perhaps KEEP gardening only because you do enjoy it and because you care for dementia clients. Reason is the care does have moments you will need your gardening enjoyment to reboot yourself. Caregivers do need to have a way to care for themselves so as not to get burned out.
