She attacked him because of the way he interviews. She makes him squirm in his seat so she can better explain her point. Attacking isn’t always non effective almost everyone who deals with politics will attack their opposer, it’s a way to make them kinda squirm and cause you to get an upper ground. I’ve seen ted do it, milo do it, Ben does it, literally probably any politician you know have done it. Thats not an argument to make her seem dumb, she knows what she’s talking about, just like he interrupts his guess so he can try to make them get confused and say the wrong thing.

@Adobo Those Because during her time there she worked on debt capital markets, hedge funds coverage, and global macroeconomics. Can you seriously tell me with a straight face that she had NO clue what Goldman Sachs (GS) were doing leading up to the global financial crisis of 08? She definitly lost all of her credability after she DENIED that GS was complicit AFTER they publicly admitted their wrongdoing and dishonest behavior which they even paid a huge fine for! Even if she did have no clue, then the answer would of been "I don't know", but to deny it after there's clear evidence and an admission of guilt? That's why I believe she lost her credability!

I disagree with Dambisa, but also disappointed by Mehdi and the panelists. 1. I don't understand why Mehdi Hasan is so hostile to the guest (Dambisa), the tone and framing of his questions is clearly shows that he was biased against her. Ofc he's the type of journalist who like to ask difficult questions, which is good, but please don't frame your guest, we are here to get new knowledge and information, *not* to "prove" that your guest is wrong. 2. Ann Pettifor (the female panelist) is pretty good at dismantling Dambisa, she didn't intentionally "provoke" the author but explain her viewpoint with clarity. Yet she's unable to do discussion, she only make set of statements but did not asking questions or making inquiry. In short, she's good at explaining her own points, but she close her mind to Dambisa's view. 3. Jason Hickel is a terrible panelist, he's full of contempt toward Dambisa and couldn't even discuss or talk about something that didn't match his original viewpoint. He's the ultimate example of narrow-mindedness. This talk is *useless,* they are unable to get anything from this discussion, just a group of people forcing their own view and *accusing* (instead of discussing with) Dambisa.
@MohamedNidabdella6 жыл бұрын
Immanuel Herman i guess m. Hassan was doing his job, a show like this is made to really challenge the guest with questions that mainstream people would ask, i think mahdi isn't the guy who would frame someone for their point of view on democracy, but he tries to see the problem as a typical person who will read mrs moyo's book and put her in that frame. By asking that framed question , he allows her to address the matter. The economist lady, has very strong arguments against mrs moyo book. You shoul've mentioned the way Mrs. moyo looks down on the host using ad hominem je each time she gets stuck (you didn't read my book - you seems very ignorant of this so i will teach you...) and uses whataboutism to defend her point of view, which is very disappointing if not pathetic. Also by the end, she talks about visiting China in tourist mode, and claiming that she knows more about china just because she went there for few days. Last, but also on china, she praises the political model of china "focused on the society" But then talks about how black people struggle to vote is a lesson of fighting for rights. Here where jason hickel had point this duality of viewing the same problem but he failed and instead looked like he didn't read her book.
@ihl07006775256 жыл бұрын
Mohamed Nidabdella I think Mehdi sour the interview by saying "just because you write it doesn't mean it's true" right in the beginning. My reaction is like: Ofc sherlock, that's why you are there. He should ask her why and get more info about her view, not to trying to disprove her. Mehdi also trying to frame her as "untrustworthy" because she was working for a big bank, which Mehdi believe as main perpetrator of 2008 housing bubble and financial crisis, therefore she's guilty by association. That's just stupid.
@MohamedNidabdella6 жыл бұрын
Immanuel Herman Exactly, the first point is a fair criticism of Mehdi's way of "challenging" the guest and i guess he could've been more professional. But the second part is as I mentioned Mehdi putting himself in the shoes of someone interested in economy who saw a best sller and read it only to discover that the writer is a GS former employee. But what I found more interesting is the weak way Mrs. Moyo answered that, she could've done better instead of adressing the association fallacy of Mehdi, she went on an ad Hominem one. I know that you may work with/for a company without agreeing to its different strategies, but other people don't see it that way, and Mrs. moyo had the chance to dismentle that idea and unfortunately missed it.
@toshir0m16 жыл бұрын
@Immanuel Herman What you describe as a flaw (in your first point) IS the very clear purpose and interest of the show. Did you see the success of past season? Mehdi was NOT less hostile to ideas he identified as false or dangerous, and that's what watchers of the show seem to actively want. You can have polite exchange of ideas ALL OVER the channels, but no no no this one ALSO must conform to the same all-too-known recipe? If you're here to take information you're at the wrong place. Get informed then come rewatch the debate, it'll be much more interesting. Some day, people will complain that John Oliver always feels the need to joke about everything during his news flash...

I beg to disagree, the guest was a bit arrogant, using ad homenim fallacy to twist the argument and make the host look ignorant, phrases like "I'm trying to teach you..." or "you seem ignorant of the subject" aren't used by people who call themselves intellectuals, and having a phd doesn't make anybody better than anyone. Let's see her argument about Clinton winning the vote of people earning 50k+ a year, she substracted two major cities and said see trump won. Anyone who is familiar with statistics would call this a p-hacking

I dont think there's any better job you can do to catch her. I don't know exactly if democracy is the sole reason for economic failure but I do know Democracy is completely failed in India. M an indian. Democracy is good in paper and policies ,not in reality. Social schemes are the way to legitimate looting of people's taxes. We may have the worst corruption level in the world. No proper road ,public schools, and public hospitals even after 71 years of independent ,led by democracy.

he is actually not a host, this show has always been a debate. and thats why its better than almost all political shows in the world, the interviewer actually gives these people a freakin hard time as they deserve, proper interviewing this is. She is pretty tough, but not that intellectual to be honest, when ever she was asked a tough question she just attacked mehdi instead of answering.
@HitSid6 жыл бұрын
Dave Ton agreed. The same can be presented in a tone where instead of offending someone we he could work towards bringing them to his side by making them understand the inherent & underlying problem, if rethinking democracy is the topic i would want everyone on board to agree, understand & move forward. PS: not at all a fan of Mehindi & the brigade of such journalist who earn their living just by degrading their guests in their show. Arnab Goswami & his cast of reporters, news readers & journalist are are disgrace to information media. I am not challenging their intelligence, but rather a presentation of themselves. If the change in democracy is required. This type of behavior is of utmost importance to change as well, nexus this is actually the abuse of the very democracy that he advocates to change. Come debate with me.

IMHO, I thought Dambisa Moyo spoke very well and answered most questions fully. It seemed some questions were put out of context as she pointed out at one point. To me she is offering ideas/comparisons that MAY offer a solution and to do this a person must look at all sides the question concerns. At no time did I feel or hear her say that there was only one solution to the issues she spoke/wrote about, often giving both sides (good and bad) to the answer. Worth a Watch!! :)

I've love watching Mehdi Hasan so far, he always come ready. But he didnt seem prepared or well researched in this one. Many of his points, I feel, she had clear answers to, conceding in some areas but being firm where she had answers or had already spoke about in her book. She was frustrated but I feel rightfully so Imo

Dambisa exposes a very uncomfortable tension in development: marrying development with human freedom with property rights and sustainable development. It is probably a trade-off between these different outcomes. A look thru economic history suggests that, it seems.

IN this case, the interviewer was acting like a _robot that was programmed to ask specific questions and required specif answers_ . This is what happens when you don't read the book of the person you are interviewing and have other people tell you to attack a guest on specific phrases that they think will keep her quiet.*He only chose sentences that he thought he would use to attack her without reading the entire chapter.*
